Gripen first participated in Red Flag 2006 with the Gripen A, It was assigned to the red team. Reduced AWACS, reduced ground support. The Gripens connected their link systems and acted themselves as AWACs, got the battlefield awareness necessary and avoided all ground defence, scored 10 kills the first day including a Typhoon. No losses were recorded on day one they remained undetected. One Gripen pilot knoicked down five F-16 Block 50+ during close air combat in Red Flag Alaska. And the Gripen never lost any aerial encounter or failed their missions objectives. It was the only fighter that performed all planned starts, while others were sitting on the ground waiting for weather to clear up. And no disrespect to any other fighters, including Norwegian pilots, because they're just as well trained, but during a combat exercise with the Royal Norwegian Air Force, 3 Swedish Gripens went up against 5 RNAF F-16s. The result was 5-0, 5-0 and 5-1 after having flown 3 rounds.@@stainz7709

multirole has been the standard for the last 40 years, rarely does any jet be put into anything else with an exception to air superiority fighters such as the F-15 or F-22. saying "Fighter" to refer to the multirole capability of the gripen or any other multirole plane is this video's least concern. there were way bigger problems in the video. in the army chapter, the tank isn't referred to as being the Stridsvagn 122 but instead mixed up with what i could only imagine being the Leopard 2A5 or A6, saying stuff like "it has two MG-3 machine guns" which is wrong it has one coaxial. and for what i know there have been no thoughts of implementing a CROWS Remote weapon station. the Leopard 2's armor is being said to "survive Kinetic penetrators 125mm in length", video creator means 125 in diameter (on top of which, kinetic penetrators are submunitions so the penetrator itself is technically smaller than that being around 30mm in diameter, but immensely long at around 640mm when speaking about the 3BM60 round). as its the main armament of the T-72, T-80, T90 tanks the 125mm 2A46. "the sides and rear too is covered in heavy ballistic and steel reinforced armor skirts" they aren't, the STRV 122 only has the NERA blocks on the sides covering the driver the rest of the vehicle is only covered with about 20-30mm of armor, just enough to stop 20mm autocannon fire. on top of which the gun is said to be able to fire the the LAHAT ATGM, which technically is true as the Israelis use the same base gun as the 122, bu i don't think any operator of the leopard actually uses the LAHAT. and especially not the swedes. in the video the narrator says "being one of the most popular jets", we cant even find a buyer for it lol, we had to bribe Hungary to buy them, and they only bought 4, and the Philippines are still pretty reluctant, the F-16 block-50 is way more bang for the buck than an aging but expensive JAS39C. he even got the hardpoints wrong, the gripen C which is in service has 8 hardpoints, one on each wingtip, two under each wing and two under the belly. the amounts of gripens are also wrong, "70 jas 39 gripen", we have 74 of the 39C, 24 of the 39D and 3 of the 39E, ending up at 101 gripens all in all, though those 24 'D' variants are twin-seater trainers, but can be used for specialized missions and are completely combat capable.

Just adding some thoughts about evaluating the Swedish navy: 1. Sweden has the most islands of any country in the world (267,570 islands) Our coastline is less shore and more... shredder. Stockholm is a city built on 14 islands, with another 30.000 islands in the Stockholm archipelago. 2. We have only one enemy and basically only the Baltic/Botnia Sea to patrol. So: One sea. Two hundred thousand islands. Seven good neighbors, one a''hole. 3. We actually do have the best aircraft carriers in the world, the unsinkable HMS Sweden and HMS Gotland. Can't imagine anything more ridiculous for the Swedish navy than an aircraft carrier that floats. Where would it go? What would it do? Did I mention we have a lot of islands? In a very small sea?

As a swede I would say we have good equipment and also a good education for our soldiers, so we have the quality, but we need the quantity. We put more money into the armed forces atm, so we will reach a good quantity in time. If we look at sweden in the 60s, little sweden had the third or fourth largest air force in the world. So we have a lot of experince when it comes to our fighter jets. I dont think any country in scandinavia will start a war and I would say your pretty nuts if you should attack any of the northern countries on their home ground. We complement each other in a way thats truly impressive. Finland have a lot of strong ground troops, Sweden have the steel, the technology and the equipment to build both, fighter jets, air defence, armored vehicles, different vessels, good artillery with the archer and you can ask the Americans how our subs are doing 😉. Norway have the oil, the fishing and huge hydroelectric power resources, Denmark is sharp as a needle when it comes to technology, they export a lot of meat and we must not forget their good beer and dont forget little Iceland, with its big fishing industry. All of us also have the one thing no one cant ignore, we always have the weather and the winter on our side. For shure we always try to annoy each other, like sibblings do. But we also are like sibblings when the shit hits the fan to. Thats the time we stand together. I would say your in deep shit if you try to wake up this sleeping bear. 🇫🇮🇮🇸🇩🇰🇳🇴🇸🇪

The Grippens ability to operate from dispersed and non standard airfields is unprecedented in modern aviation. It can be maintained by a small team, often made up of several conscripts, in a forest. Engine can be swapped in the field in a very short time. In conjunction with Swedens highway design, it means its airforce is much better equipped to handle coming under fire. NATO has really slept on the threat of long range missiel strikes taking out airbases.

Yes compare the Gripen’s maintenance overhead w that of the F16 which is something like 7 hrs maintenance by a big crew for every hour of flight!! F16 is so not the right aircraft for Ukraine. The Gotland class subs a very small as they are not carrying ICBM’s which adds to their covert capabilities. Tanks are just as prone to mines and drones. Nothing about drone capability in the air on the ground or even maritime - a glaring weakness and lastly nothing, nada, about anti drone defences. Work to be done.

"unprecedented in modern aviation" not really, the finns do the same with their F-18 Hornets. "It can be maintained by a small team, often made up of several conscripts" now thats a key point! "NATO has really slept on the threat of long range missiel strikes taking out airbases" not really, all western airforces tried to combat this threat their own ways, West-Germany developed tons of VTOL jets like the Dornier-31, i mean just read the design chapter on the wikipedia: "During the late 1950s and 1960s, the German Air Force became increasingly concerned that, in the event of a major conflict with the Eastern Bloc, its airfields would be highly vulnerable to attack, quickly preventing the use of conventional aircraft in any such conflict. Seeking to counter this threat, the service actively researched the possibility of dispersed operation" they also developed VTOL Fighters like the VFW VAK 191B to compliment the dispersed tactics, and also rocket-assisted takeoff for their fleet of F-104 starfighters. the French also dabbled a bit in the idea with the SNECMA C.450 Coléoptère, a tail standing VTOL aircraft. and just like the Do-31, just read this paragraph on wikipedia: "During the 1950s, aircraft designers around the world engaged in programmes to develop fixed-wing aircraft that could not only perform both a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL), but transition into and out of conventional flight as well. As observed by the aviation author Francis K. Mason, a combat aircraft that possessed such qualities would have effectively eliminate the traditional reliance on relatively vulnerable runways by taking off and landing vertically as opposed to the conventional horizontal approach." the reason only we and the finns do it today is because the threat from the soviet union ended 30 years ago, a lot of nations completely cut their military budget and sacked staff. doctrines changed from preparation of Soviet Strategic strikes on NATO airfields to insurgent slaying, with Yugoslavia in 1990s, Iraq 2 times etc. NATO changed their strategy but with Sweden being Neutral we had to defend our own borders, thus keeping our wartime doctrine but cutting budgets.

Nice video but the narrator is missing some key points. The CV-90 IFV and Archer SPA should've been in there, and the most significant advantage of Gripen is EW and C&C abilities, were missed out. One Gripen is not more than a very capable fighter, but since it can communicate with both army and navy units and share data between aircraft automatically, providing additional targeting data, it allows for some powerful combos. And since it's stealth is software-based, it is much cheper to maintain than physical stealth measures

Also the Gripen has a 12 minute turn around for refuel and rearming with a 3 to 5 person crew, and can do this on a highway if the runways get destroyed. It can also rotate it's radar to look sideways and has state of the art electronic warfare that match or exceed the f-35. Definately a well engineered aircraft and an asset for NATO.

The Swedish submarines defeated the carrier strike force several times WITHOUT being detected once. Also the Gripen vs F22 or F35 is far more one sided than you think. The missile lock on Blackbird was way before we had the Gripen fighters. It was a Viggen or Draken fighter who did that. Full stealth means not as good flying capabilities, but Gripen has a really small radar cross section and with Meteor under it wings it is the most deadly fighter in the world. It has beyond visual range capabilities and the Meteor is so fast it will catch up fleeing jets. So, don't let the size, top speed and lack of full stealth fool you. Besides the pilot training is brutal. They are flying on the edge. I have seen Gripen flying below the tree line and a former pilot told me back in the 70's they were flying so hard they had tree branches in the landing gear when they came back home. Perhaps this video was made before Finland was ratified as a member. But Sweden is not yet a member the Hungarian new presidents signature is still needed for it. basically everything in the video is wrong, here are some key points: in the army chapter, the tank isn't referred to as being the Stridsvagn 122 but instead mixed up with what i could only imagine being the Leopard 2A5 or A6, saying stuff like "it has two MG-3 machine guns" which is wrong it has one coaxial. and for what i know there have been no thoughts of implementing a CROWS Remote weapon station. the Leopard 2's armor is being said to "survive Kinetic penetrators 125mm in length", video creator means 125 in diameter (on top of which, kinetic penetrators are submunitions so the penetrator itself is technically smaller than that being around 30mm in diameter, but immensely long at around 640mm when speaking about the 3BM60 round). as its the main armament of the T-72, T-80, T90 tanks the 125mm 2A46.

Well... Sweden was/is ready to defend the country against Russia for weeks, months but as we were NATO unofficial partner and really good friends with Finland (was neutral country as we were) it was expected and relied upon some sort of support from this... that was "my" expectation... but as we all seen from Ukraine, even Sweden alone could probably lasted for years from a Russian attack... It's a bit scary that Ukraine have fought Russia for 2 years and still not got the full support that I expected... They also was an "unofficial" partner to NATO I guess... ---edit JAS 39 Gripen C/D is just awesome... it's serves our airforce perfect as it it's built for us (and will serve other air forces rightly so). The E/F variant is icing on the cake, not that much bigger and built with the same principle but just better in most ways (bigger radar, more payload, more fuel, 2020 computer tech and so on). Most bang for the buck as the americans say... but ofc it's not better then F-22 (well R&D would almost build the Swedish air force alone), F-35 (any variant) and so on... But again I guess 4 E variants can (and probably would) take a F-22 down with some tactics and 4 JAS 39/E would be a lot (a looot) cheaper then 1 F-22 in 2-3 year span of buying, servicing... so for the long haul... JAS 39 Gripen (C/D/E/F) is one of the best planes out there... 1 against 1 it will suffer against a couple of planes out there... But Gripen is never alone, and with the cost of ownership it will never be alone in a fight... 10 F-35 could be meet by 30 Gripens. F-35 is great (all variants) but 5-10 years it will have a significant cost compared to Gripen E/F and the technology transfer pretty much means (as in Brazil) that you can produce your own... But lets not argue as Sweden is (now hopefully) a NATO country! And that means 10 F-35 can be escorted by 30 Gripens and probably rule the skies! :-) ----edit Forgot about the Rafale, and Eurofighter Typhoon. Obviously awesome planes! Mostly better specs then JAS-39 C/D but again cost of ownership is failing. E/F variant is equal and surpassing some of the specs. Twin engines has a purpose but maintenance of these engines is not just twice as hard it's probably thrice as hard. And that defeats some of the benefits of having 2 engines actually... Servicing these in a wartime setting I'm guessing is not ideal. I could argue either way, but my conclusion is that 1 reliable, easily serviceable is better then 2 that is harder to be service in a wartime setting. ---edit again (commenting as I watch :) Another pride of the Swedish Military is the CV90, the latest variant is just awesome. Could almost be considered as a really light "tank"... but is ofc an IFV and as an IFV it's great! Then we have the Archer Artillery System... suites us for our defense pretty much perfect, will suite many other ofc. With it's shoot and scoot capability it's up there with the top artillery in the world I think...

@@memkiii Nah, the Gripen E is nothing like the F-35. The F-35 relies on stealth, it isn't a great flyer or very fast compared to most fighter jets but it is supposed to find the enemy before it finds them and fire off a couple of missiles. Gripen is a very different beast, it isn't stealthy but highly maneuverable and quick to get back in the air after a mission. Both are multi purpose planes though, they have that in common. But Gripen's way of avoiding detection is flying very very close to the ground and the only reason it can do that is because Sweden's real advantage: Swedish pilots generally stay in the air force about 4 times longer then an American pilot so you have more experienced pilots. There is a drawback there too, because replacing a pilot with over 10 years experience quickly is impossible. But the planes are made with totally different military doctrines in mind. Yes, both uses pretty advanced radar and electronic counter measures and so on but that doesn't make them like. To be fair is Gripen not that much like an F-16 either as they claim in the vid. Sweden's military situation is nothing like US situation and both countries makes planes to in first hand fit their own needs. Comparing them in any other way then a simulated dogfight is pretty useless. I am surprised they didn't mention the SAAB Global eyes AWAC system though, if you want to pit a Gripen Vs a F-35 it kinda needs it so it can see the F-35 quick enough and it is a vital part of Sweden's strategy since it is the only way to detect 5 gen planes in time. Gripen is a fine plane but it is not a plane that would fit something like USAF who have very different needs. I don't think I would want to fight an F-22 in a Gripen any day soon either, unlike the F-35 it is both stealthy and a great flyer so that is unlikely to end well for the Gripen.

Today Sweden has given away 1/4 of their supplies and without NATO could do very little to defend themself, let alone defeat *that* enemy.

Swedish "neutrality" is a construction to serve Swredish arms-export. We have not been involved in war for 200 yrs, correct, but we have been in bed with the US since the 50's to an extent that far exceeds the responsibilities with the new NATO situation in mind. Our cooperation with the US (Stay behind/CIA, FRA etc etc) is far from "neutral" as dictated in the Vienna Convention in 1849 where Swefen, Switzerland and Lichtenstein (?) declared "neutral", but we have and are not neutral....Hermann Göring -20'..?, Swedish Bankers via Warburg Bank helped A.H to power....SAAB...Junkers 88 logotype?? Neutral? Drop it!

Thank you for your content, I really appreciate it. Since my basic military training in Sweden in the nineties, the Swedish military downsized its army for almost 2 decades. I am glad to now see the Defense Budget rapidly increasing again, and expanding the defense capabilities not only with top of the line technology and advanced equipment, but also in quantity. Joining NATO, finally, is a great move, but also a very natural step. Sweden has had tight cooperations with the US, UK, Germany and basically all of the existing NATO-countries for a long time. Sweden being “neutral” (IMO) has only been theoretical on paper for many years. There has never been any questions about what values, and who’s “side” Sweden is on, should another Great War ever divide the world again.

The bottom line is, we have high tax so we can spend some extra on expensive custom made toys even if we are small. But i wouldn't call us a superpower, we're just primarly geographically lucky. We got the Finnish in the northeast, a huge mountainrange to the west and norway, and a big coast to the south and east to a small ocean with an indestructible aircraft carrier in it. Along with thousands of islands scattered everywhere. And forest everywhere you look so a swede might pop up anywhere with an anti-tank, anti-air missile or a hunting rifle. There are basicly two roads to traverse the whole country and everywhere else there is just dense dense forest except for in the furthest south, but i'm guessing the passage to the botnic sea by denmark would be a pretty dumb decicion since there is a narrow pass, and the passage between finland and Estonia is also a pretty narrow pass and could easily be completely mined. And aircrafts can land, refuel and rearm at different locations on any decently paved road even if airports gets destroyed.
