A lot of the open spaces you see in the corners are designed as such so they can let the air cool down the stadium naturally. Most of these teams play under very warm (and humid) conditions, and the fans are not much more comfortable either.

Minnesota's open corners were designed to be able to expand in the case of more demand for tickets. Also, our football stadiums are huge because there's maybe eight games a year at them. A lot easier to get 50k+ with so little games.

A lot of the OG MLS clubs only built 3 sided stadiums to make it easier to host concerts in the open end and earn more revenue outside of match day. It's especially noticable with FC Dallas and the Columbus Crew where they built stage canopies in the open ends of their stadiums

Miami's is temporary. Portland is 3 sided, but they can't build over the neighboring building which is a health club and also owns the stadium, thus they are stuck. They do have a huge waiting list and could probably fill a 40-50,000 seat stadium if they had the room.

  • @jacklewis5452

Professional sports teams in the US have learned not to build massive stadiums. They build stadiums that promote an exciting experience for the fan and family. American sporting events are much more family oriented than European sporting events. MLB stadiums generally target 40,000 as the best sized stadiums. Cleveland use to have a baseball stadium that seated 80,000, but that means fans are in a cavern with no personal experience. NFL stadiums target 65,0000. NHL stadiums generally 17-18,000.......same with NBA. So dont be surprised if MLS stadiums arent as big as UK stadiums. Professional sports here are part of the entertainment industry and the experience of the casual fan, which is very important, can be better promoted in a stadium sized per above.

I think they are leaving room to expand as the league grows. Once you're constantly filling up the 18k stadiums, you can always add seats. I believe the average attendance at MLS games was like 21k in 2019. Maybe by not spending everything all at once on a stadium, they can keep ticket prices lower.

For NYCFC they were originally supposed to have their own stadium but things didn’t work out so they were forced to make do with Yankee Stadium. Plans keep falling through so they haven’t been able to leave. What they do is they put sod down on the dirt base paths and then line it and put the goals in.

They showed the old Crew Stadium right before the new one; they're moving to the new stadium this year, I believe. The old one has a fair bit of history - it's where the US usually hosts the World Cup qualifier against Mexico, which we'd won 2-0 four times in a row against them there before the disaster that was the 2018 qualifying cycle. LA Galaxy's stadium is the largest that is only for soccer. Vancouver and Toronto share theirs with Canadian Football League teams, NYC FC with the Yankees (obviously), and Chicago, New England, Atlanta, Seattle, and Nashville with NFL teams.

Part of the deal with the three stand stadiums is they are cheaper to build. It’s not exactly raining money in MLS so teams build what they can afford and it also is more easily filled without full rap around stands. It also leaves room for expansion if the league gets bigger.

So all the stadiums after Vancouvers stadium are shared with NFL teams. I seem to remember Chicago Fire had their own stadium at one point, but they must have moved to Soldier Field (the Chicago Bears stadium). I don't know about the other NFL stadiums but Lumen Field while it's seen as a NFL stadium it was specifically designed for both Football and Soccer, and a lot of the votes to have the stadium built came from Soccer fans. While 68,740 is the max capacity on most game days the owners open about 40,000 seats and only open the whole stadium for the biggest games: Portland, Vancouver, Galaxy, and a few other teams.

Most of the 3 sided stadiums you're seeing probably had to raise taxes or sell city bonds in order to get them built. Not to mention that often in America the city or state funds half of the project and the rest falls to the public. In order to sway public opinion about the stadium. To appease the masses these are often built as multipurpose complex, not just for soccer. Think of any event that could be done outside. And now the city has that space. Most often this is concerts as artist travel around the country on their tours. Putting the concert stage in front of the open side allows any ticket bought for the concert to have full view of the stage. So when looking out from the stage, no one is behind you and you are left with a U shape of fans. A few stadiums are also open on to one side as to no obstruct the view of either the mountains or downtown skylines.

The orlando team (the Lions or the Women's pride) stadium is actually the practice field. We do play games occasionally there mostly because its big enough but their main Stadium is the Camping World Stadium aka UCF arena before that. Its like 100,000 seats maybe more as Wrestlemania constantly is there and NXT takeover events, Raw and Smackdown were across the highway bridge in the arena. That's big. what the teams get is that stadium which they practice on and play the occasional game that isn't worth much in ranking but other teams might use it for world cup qualifiers or something of that nature because those are national teams not city ones. Usually they play the big Stadiums Like Camping World Stadium when they get rankings or something that's important so its just easier on the players.

MLS are the 9th best attended football league in the world. Most clubs are building stadia which are easily expandable in order to accommodate future growth. The demand for the beautiful game is growing at a steady and rapid rate. Most clubs have long waiting lists for season tickets. The league has implemented growth and expansion very intelligently. They have not outspent themselves, nor have they overreached. The biggest criticism from the world community is that it is a closed league; IE no promotion/relegation. I think that's fair. But, I do think implementing the traditional European model of pro/rel would be a huge mistake. You've got your own problems over there and European club football is in for a rude tumble in the next few years. There are roughly 30 teams in the American second division (USL Championship), many of which want badly to play in MLS and are found in cities with sufficient population and support. The American third division is similarly competitive, with numerous clubs in large enough cities to justify a first division club. I think MLS should implement a hybrid system of promotion/relegation.... utilize revenue sharing to pay promoted teams a cash bonus in order to be competitive in the higher league, give them some sort of a subsidy on transfer fees at the first window, etc. In other words, find a way to incorporate the European philosophy that any club could theoretically advance to the highest level, but give newly promoted and struggling clubs a fighting chance to be competitive. There's gotta be a way to pull it off.

Why are there only two stands? Because the best views are between the end lines, goal lines or what ever sport is being played. Seats in the corners are the worst for a sport viewing experience and the end seats arent that great. So as I mention in my other post, the professional teams go for in stadium experience to promote their "product". College teams on the other hand, go for big stadiums and in order to get big........you need the end zones and corner seats.

I believe there is 3-side stadiums in the us because the screens are larger than most of European screens for scores and video. the video screens at football and soccer stadiums are generally so big that they take up the "short" endzone/goal area. If no big screen, then don't you want to look out in the city while you're smashing a beer and food during half-time, or is that not a European thing? and yeah you know that many people do not care when you see season ticket price comparisons- i can either pay $500 for Columbus Crew season tickets, $750 for Ohio State University football season tickets, or pay $800 for Cincinnati Bengals season tickets (and the Bengals are one of the worst teams in the league)

I think the Vancouver Stadium is for soccer only. Vancouver is in Canada BTW but the Salt Lake one is not . It’s in Utah USA. The Atlanta United stadium (Mercedes) has out done all European stadiums attendance during some match days. ATL! I think one major factor that holds back soccer in the US. is that MLS actually struggles to compete with other more established popular American sports for airtime on television. This cost them a lot of lost revenue and less exposure.

A lot of the MLS stadiums are small bc Futbol is not as popular as american football, basketball, and baseball... The bigger stadiums in America are reserved for those sports mostly.. smaller stadiums are easier to fill for some of these clubs.

I wonder if it will have FC Cincinnati's new stadium? I guess I'll watch and see... YEP! There she is!! 26K seats... brand new (TQL stadium -- I have no idea what the name means). Took a LOT to get it done because it's mere blocks away from Music Hall and we didn't want noise from the soccer hooligans to disturb the symphony, the Pops, the opera, the ballet, et cetera...

I've been to Olympic Stadium in Berlin to see Borussia Dortmund vs. Hertha BSC. Tbh Olympic Stadium was underwhelming. Aztec Stadium in Mexico City felt bigger. In the US I think Centurylink Field is the best one only because I'm biased in favor of the Seahawks and Sounders

You seem disapointed, yet, as an american soccer fan I'm just thrilled we have permanent Soccer-specific facilities for our "premier" or "major league" clubs. Sure as heck beats looking at empty seats in college or nfl (american football) stadiums.

I think the size has to do with popularity. Unless you’re a diehard, soccer is the 5th sport over here. At least that’s how it seems to me
