British Slang | "Banter" Explained
Here are some British slang terms I was asked about on Facebook. I also explain the meaning of "banter" - it's a very common part of British English culture and you need to understand it to get on well with English speakers.
Remember, you don't NEED an RP British accent to speak English well... There are loads of accents out there! I'm just here to help people who have a love for modern versions of RP.

English is my native language, but I always love watching videos about British slang, because it is SO DIFFERENT than the slang we use here in Canada. Learned a lot watching this ^^

I love your videos! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
I moved to America earlier this year and it still throws me when people ask me to repeat things because they have no idea what I mean. Someone at Dunkin asked if I wanted sprinkles on my doughnut and I replied, "OH go on then!" and she just stared at me and asked nervously, "Yes or no?". Apparently its not a common used phrase. At work I asked someone if I had 'dropped them in it' and it was awkward having to explain everything from the beginning.

Haha the "go on then!" I would have gotten but definitely not the "dropped them in it". Go on then just sounds similar to "go ahead" to me. Maybe it was the way you said it?
You should make at least about 10 audio books! I am sure many people would purchase them and they would never get bored since you have such a perfect diction and voice.
You are my best teacher ever ! And before I go to sleep, I am so happy that I can study English with your video. Thank you so much♥️♥️♥️
Your videos are very helpful! Since I watch your videos my british accent got much better.
Honestly, I struggle to explain the word 'banter' without using the word 'banter'.

I love your lessons! They are fantastic! I am wondering if you got a text version so I can follow it words by words and study the sentence as exquisitely as I can. Thank you!
Thank you for this lesson Elliott. I really love British humour. All banters during PMQs and panel shows make English even more fun to learn. :)

Your videos are very natural. It's just you, the same way of delivering info throughout the series. I've watched many English videos. Some are a bit unnatural or trying to be funny or cool. Good work.
Thanks! It is a very important topic for the student who has close contact with native speakers daily. As you said, It is necessary for him or her to be careful in using slang so as not to offend someone.
very useful as always! thanks so much!

Hi Elliot, I have a question concerning the "British sarcasm". The other day I overheard my British colleague saying something to the other colleague. At the end, I heard him saying something like "I am just being sarcastic" jokingly . I am sure he was NOT being mean. This reminded me of how commonly sarcasm is used in British English (from my British roommate experience). It would be nice if you can do a video on that because this is the sort of thing that couldn't be learnt from textbooks. I don't want to get all serious when people are just being friendly. Thank you! And btw, I really enjoy your channel:)

That's a very good point. Sarcasm is definitely something which can not be taught through textbooks and I would be happy to teach a topic like this on my channel in the future! It's so common in British English and every learner deserves some form of understanding so they don't feel uncomfortable. Thank you for the suggestion!
Very good video and helpful i appreciate it watching your video God bless mate
Thank you very much indeed.
Thanks for the information... it is really helpful for me to practice the british accent since i like to watch harry potter..😌
I Love British Accent 100%,, Thank You Very Much, I can improve my English 😍😍😍🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for the lesson, man.
Thank u very much for teaching slang..It's needed as a new cultural layer aspecially for young people who go to British campings, live in families to master language..I am sorry to say I know little slang words and my exchange students after returning from Britain and America say that i teach them obsolete language which nobody uses now...Wow! Where on facebook r u?

Perhaps you would comment on the term ' High Street' which seems to indicate the main commercial thoroughfare in English towns. Here in America "Main Street" is usually used but it is actually called that in many towns.
May you please do more videos for Slang expressions because we cant find them in Books ... Thank You So much :)

Banger is used in North America too! I’ve been using it since I could remember
Excellent
I really like the Word "banter" because I have a lot of it at work but I don't know how to use It! Can I use it as a verb, as in "you're always bantering?
Thank you for this video. My 12 year old son has autism, and he finds every day conversation difficult to completely understand. Your explanation of ‘banter’ helped him understand what it is and how to use it (and hopefully when not to use it). Thanks again!
I'm new cause of your hair, voice and glasses ^3^
👍😊😊 Thank You Teacher

Could you please make a video about cockney accent?
Misuse of though, do hope that's not becoming a thing. "Though" expresses contrast or the unexpected . "This cheese smells like old socks, it tastes great though"
@sethhatton7614

Yeah, it's unexpected that the cheese would taste good since it smells bad, thus explaining the use of though.
What does " 'Eld N'Over" mean? Please? TYSM! Heard it in "Dickens - A Christmas Carol" many times!
ARE YOU HOME ALONE BOY wink wink.. you are a Banger.. never seen someone such a geezer like you
Thanks.....Cheers! :)

Teacher i have. Question in sentence “ their face brightened up “ should i pronounce letter r in their or not when i speak to anyone ?????! Thanks in advance
funny Bangalore is almost like U.K. we aslo Banter alot with our friends. We call it teasing too!! 😀
what's the difference between banter and joke? by the way i love your videos :)
Top man
Australian and English natives talk banter but In America and New Zealand it is not as common. It comes off more as a mean thing to other English speakers. English language culture is somewhat petty and had a delicate subtlety in terms of sarcasm, wit and banter unlike American humour which is usually in your face and quite obvious so that you know what is going on if you just learnt English last month.
We used to call an old person a geezer in Canada
Your vids really helpful, I'm planning to apply working holiday in uk...can't wait to talk to native English
Having a mare Having a mightmare = Having a bad day Going off on one Getting unnecessarily angry Geezer/Geeza Mate, buddy in Cockney accent Banger Good song Same as 'Tune' Though (at the end of a sentence) Emphasize a point stated earlier Lit Great, amazing Banter Culture thing Make fun of something, in good spirit Take piss out of someone Verbally roast someone Use these with friends. Not with a senior
Cool video 👌 something in United States the slang we will use if something's really good will say it's slamming.. the food was slammin !! Joke for teasing someone you're kind of digging on I used to say ribbon -ribbing, talking smack 🤣 I'm pumped!! Is the slang I use if I was excited about something
More British English Plz
nice☺☺☺☺☺
Great Great banter.
I sent u message on facebook I asked u about ( up for and up to) and when we use it? ^^
👌
Please make a video of difference between Hungry and Angry.....
If you don't prick the skin of a sausage before frying it, it will explode in the pan - a banger!
Isn't banter also like flirting or just good chat or conversation?
I'm British, i don't know any of this stuff. i literally youtube what is British banter because i heard an American talk about it :D lol
Though I'm British, I'm not a massive lover of banter. It can very easily be misunderstood or go badly wrong. You have to know your audience extremely well to avoid upset. I quite simply don't want to upset others
Could anyone tell me a web where I can put a word and it tells me if it is British or American? Do you know what I mean?
Can i have a question. What does it mean "a few spanners shot"?
😅banter seems to be a culture in Jamaica as well.

So basically, banter is a friendly or affectionate teasing?
@calbeaney8711
5 жыл бұрын
Yes, but often using very rude jokes or teases. The kind of banter many of my mates have is downright offensive, and nobody else would get away with saying what we say to each other.

Banter is fine between friends who know to expect it amongst themselves. Banter with strangers or those who have not given permission is wrong and basically bullying and those who do it are out of order.

@@tcraigh1 I agree. I'm British, but to be honest don't engage in banter with anyone other than those I know extremely well, whose boundaries I know. I've been 'a victim' of banter taken far too far, and I really got upset. Until you know someone's boundaries... I'm female though. Men seem to take it much further, and don't seem to mind so much...

Bantering happens in the states, but it's not called bantering. I heard people from the south ripping on each other, just to get the daily laughs.

l m sunrise from cambodia to you study english slang words Hi how are you ?
Hmmm... interesting. Whilst I have heard 'banger' for a good tune 'That's a banging tune'. Amongst my contemporaries we would probably say 'belter', instead. Incidentally I heard this one regarding banter the other day: 'Blokes take the piss out of each other but don't mean it. Women compliment each other, but don't mean it either'. No further comment!

Want to move to England from us though Americans speak a little different and it makes “me go off”
