That GT6 is hands down the best looking car of the three. When I was 20 there was one for sale on the local forecourt for £700; I couldn’t take my eyes off it, but it needed some work and the insurance was high so ended up buying a 1973 yellow soft top Spitfire which was also a beauty. Every once in a while, a car manufacturer comes up with a classic masterpiece of design which they are never quite able to match again, and the GT6/Spitfire design is one of them. Triumph were on a roll back then, the Stag was another one, but I prefer the Spitfire/GT6 design even to that.

I'm very grateful to you for this wonderful video. British roadsters were an utterly indispensable part of my happy youth, growing up in Dallas in the early 70's. I had many different models, including a Midget, a TR-6 and an MGC, among others. No matter if the weather was blazing hot, icy cold or torrentially wet, my top was always down and driving anywhere, anytime was a sweet adventure. Best of all, every girl I ever dated loved riding in those cars and adored me for sharing the fun with them. For me, the driving pleasure that even the humblest roadster provides, has always trumped that of any exotic coupe I've ever driven. In the case of the MGC in particular, one of its great virtues was the remarkable low end torque of that lovely 6 cylinder, which enabled it to easily out-pull many of the hopelessly anemic V8's of that era, whenever traffic lights turned green. The look of astonishment on the face of the other driver who thought they were dragging a lowly MGB was priceless. On the other hand, as you alluded to in your video the car was so nose heavy that it plowed like a John Deere tractor in the turns. Worse still, the pathetic brakes made it an absolute hazard to navigation. But, the exhaust note was glorious. And on the highway, the Normanville de Laycock overdrive made it a pure dream cruiser. Thanks again for this fine remembrance.

I’ll admit I’m an MG guy. I drove a MGC-GT about 10 years ago in the mountains of Virginia, and I still want one. I couldn’t push it hard, but hard enough I knew it handled well. It wasn’t just the tire pressure on the press cars, sitting in one it’s an MGB, but silky smooth and deceptively fast. It would be easy to get deep into a corner and realize too late you were in trouble. Do that on low pressure tires, and it’s gonna be ugly.

I briefly owned a 73 gt6. It was very rough and didn't have a title. Looking back, I should have kept it as there are ways to aquire paperwork. I thought it was very handsome. I now own a 75 MGB and am starting to wrench on it. My youngest kid is excited with me and likes to be out in the shop with me. I call that a win.

I was in grade school when the first 240z showed up in the small Illinois town where I grew up. It was one of the most beautiful cars that I had ever seen (still is). By the time I was in high school I had become enamored with British roadsters and wound up finding a Triumph Spitfire in decent condition for my first car. Had a deal on a used 240z come along I would have been thrilled by that as well. These days I own a Honda S2000. However, if garage space and additional funds weren't an issue, I'd still be thrilled to add a 240z to the mix along with another old Triumph (I'd try a TR6 this time around).

The Daimler Dart 252 was the compromise car that should have been the car that won. V6 engine was unbelievable. I'm a gt6 fan, triumph was perfect for tinkering with and easy to work on. The rotoflex is a pain but not a major issue. Mg's are adaptable and fun drives.

My first car was a 1964 Triumph Spitfire in 1966, $1450. It had a huge 1.15 liter 4 cylinder engine with 2 SU carbs. Was it fast? Just take a wild guess. But when you compared its handling to US cars, including the Corvette, there was no comparison. I grew up in Louisville, Ky., and regularly went out to the neighboring counties that had great, curvey roads, and boy! was that fun! If you took a US car out there all you'd have is squealing, sliding tires, and hopes that you could keep it on the roads. But the Spitfire was not only fun but FASTER!!!

Even the C3 Corvettes didn't handle that well, even if they had the 350. They're fun cars to drive and keep you on your toes, but they'll spin out quickly. But they are some of the most beautiful cars ever made.

Enjoyed the comparison, my older brother had a big 6 Healy and the child hood romance I had with that two tone paint, the character line falling behind the rear wheel arches, and that lovely sound has always haunted me. Then back in the late 90's I had a chance to purchase an MBC and drug my feat thinking no one new what it was. Bad move after (2) days the gentleman sold it for 1000 bucks over his original asking price. Still crying here in New Jersey. You have just lit the fire in me again except now everything is in the $tratosphere.

I owned a 1969 GT6+ and loved it. It was like driving a slot car on the road, the way it hugged the curves. I've never driven a more satisfying car for the sheer joy of it. But if you're a larger driver you're never going to be happy in it. If you're too wide or tall for the cockpit, you should find something else. But for me, it fit like a glove and drove like an extension of my limbs.

Finally! How I’ve been waiting for new episodes of this! Mr Buckley has been my absolute favorite car-journalist for more years than I really care to admit... The idea of having just one really good car to take care of, in place of multiple ones in varying degrees of “reasonable shape” is appealing in many aspects, but it seems impossible for one car to cater for all your “needs”... Especially when you, like me is filled with anxiety and dread just to think of the selling process... I have a small collection of a Doublesix, a SD1, an Allegro (and a BMW 550i estate as a daily driver) and am just about to add an Eldorado convertible. And one 2-door garage. In Sweden, where the weather can get, well, varying. Not wise, really. The only car I might see replacing them though is a Bristol. But they’re not cheap and not very plentiful in LHD. Which is one of my few principles - it’s supposed to look like it was sold new in the country it resides. Keep up the good work!

Once you've owned a straight six it's hard to go back to a four, they seem so rough by comparison! The GT6 is a sweet little car, but sorry to say my 240Z was a much better car than both my TR6 and GT6. The Triumphs were fragile whereas the Z was strong as a truck; just better engineered. (The Triumphs still had the lovely woodgrain dashboards, I'd still own any of them in a heartbeat)

I went from a '63 in white and '65 Corvair in repainted fire engine red to a '67 GT6+ in British racing green (but of course!) and really liked both the '65 'Vair and '67 Triumph. The '65 'Vair was heavily reworked to give plenty of power (although it started with a 180 HP turbo from Chevrolet) thanks to some great engine shop changes. The GT with its wire wheels and knock-off hubs looked sweet while always made sure you had something to do to it on the weekends. Although I loved driving it because it fit like a glove and the Abarth exhaust gave it a fine tune with the side-drafts wide open, the suspension and electrics were nightmares. The suspension cornered a lot like the '63 'Vair and once committed in a turn you dare not lift the throttle for fear of a snapping oversteer switching ends (changes made to the '65 'Vair made it a surefooted cornering gem). Still remember many a weekend chasing gremlins in the GT's wiring system and sometimes running parallel batteries to "smoke out the bugger". The '65 'Vair left such a lasting impression that I bought another one in my second childhood years - she's now a garage queen. Thanks for an interesting view of some British motorcars.

What a great surprise to be alerted to a new video from NewVsOld. When it comes to MG vs Triumph debates, I generally side with the Triumph's, in no small part due to their styling. (Perhaps for sentimental reasons as well given that my very first car was a 1972 Spitfire MKIV that I bought in 1978 - not a common choice of car in rural Illinois where I grew up.) In this case however, the MGC would win me over simply because I love top-down motoring. Still, despite their faults, I'd happily own either one of these two classics. Modern cars lacking manual transmissions, such as the Jaguar, fail to interest me regardless of their performance figures.

...Well, that was informative, BUT, I've been enjoying a relationship with my Triumph TR3A ('59) for almost 52 years now...It's never let me down, never "caught fire" and never been restored...just the best maintenance that I could provide with the limitations I've had.....I'm a bit disappointed that you didn't acknowledge the Triumph TR250 in your 6 cylinder study......The TR6 of course is in the same category as the big Healey, for sure......I drove my TR3A through 2 winters in Northern Ontario (Can.) without sidecurtains while wearing a snowmobile suit...I thought, well, maybe this car's a 'keeper' and bought Amco sidecurtains, although I hardly ever use them...The night I bought it, I had to start it with the crank...It's always served me well, for $150 that's not bad at all,eh.....( I'm 6'6" , 230lbs)

I don't subscribe to the Triumph vs MG rivalry, a well sorted MGB (not the C!) is a driver's delight but I love the GT6's sound and character. Long live proper old motors, and journos! Thanks guys.

Old British sports cars are misunderstood. I have had Japanese 70’s and 80’s cars that at the time was judged as “much better quality” then the British cars from 50’s and 60’s. But in reality when cars get old it’s then you can really appreciate the quality. And one thing is for sure; anyone that has restored any older car Japanese or older British will understand that the British cars were made much better. In better I mean much better materials. Better and thicker steel, better and thicker electrical cables, components that can be taken apart and repaired instead of being replaced. I got a 1970 TR6 and loves to work on this car, what a joy compared to modern cars. And so much fun to drive, not fast but just lovely. I can honestly say I have driven cars for over 40 years but I have never enjoyed driving any car as much as my TR6, never mind taking my BMW to 150 miles on the German autobahn, the TR6 is just a sports car that keeps giving…

Having two MGC GT there are some adjustments you can make increase the tire pressure in the front tires making steering easier and parking This car you can add A/C and power steering the engine can take it I have got my black C up to 110 mph( with over drive ) and the front end started to lift even with a heavy engine You can replace the heavy fly wheel see Holmes racing and Kirk auto The latter C have a smoother rear axle which the V8 boys want . The Hipster car now in fashion ! Thanks for the video keeps these cars in the public eye Cheers Maybe mention the Sabotage of the car at Earl Court and The press drive theory !!

I used to own a 74 Spitfire 1300. I always thought it was roomier than the MG B. Narrower, maybe, but more room between driver and steering wheel. I liked it. It was fun. But it could try to kill you if you took any liberties, especially if the road conditions weren't perfectly dry. I've always preferred sixes (and twelves), but I agree there's something special about the sound of a six. Generally speaking, I'd rather have a six than a V8, even a V6. I used to think about an MG C or maybe a TR6. Sometimes I wondered about a GT6, but always thought that basically a Spitfire with more power would want to kill me more. These days, I tend to think these older cars are just too slow and needy for my tastes, and basically I'm too fat to fit in comfortably. I don't like being close to the wheel. If I were to consider going down the classic 6cyl British sports car route I think it would have to be the TR6 or an E-Type. An old Aston would simply be out of the question for me budget-wise. Still, I think both the TR6 and the E-Type would also be too cramped for me. I guess I grew with modern cars. And love 'em or hate 'em, they may be a bit dull in many ways, but they're so much easier to live with. Sacrilege to say for many, I'm sure, but I think the likes of the BMW Z4, especially the Coupe, occupy a happy space between the classic and the modern. And one thing BMW does well is 6cyl engines. And then there's always the Boxster and the 911. Maybe even a V6 Alfa. I don't like the sound of superchargers, so an F-Type, even a manual, does not rock my boat. I'd rather have an SL if I were to go with a GT car. At the end of the day, I don't think nostalgia is enough for me to have a classic British Leyland car as my special car. Maybe if I were to one day have a collection of cars. If I were to accept the hassles of having a classic car as my special car, I would simply want something significantly more special.

I prefer the MGC. I own a 1968 MGC GT that I am presently restoring back to its former glory. I also own the following restored MGBs 68, 71, 79, 80, 79 and 80 Black Limited Editions. I have also owned two Triumph Spitfires a 69 and a 74. Both were the 4 cylinder models. I always felt the build quality of the Triumph Spitfire was not as good as the MGs. Parts are also easier to get compared to the Triumphs.

As an owner of both cars and someone who remembers when both models were released they both have different appeals. The GT6 Mk3 to which I have now sold was a good classy sports car when it came out and its evolution through the three versions were improvements that at the time made the car better each time, where as the MG C was never a model that looked classy when it came out, it's poor thought out interior, it's bland looking design, is there anything worse than an MG B/C roadster for blandness? However when I was offered an extremely good price for my GT6, it departed and I bought an MG CGT, I would have liked an Austin Healey but that was out of my price bracket, so the C I bought - poor man's Healey! Firstly the CGT is a good looking design, BMC going to Pinna Farina to make it look good, there is more space interior wise than the GT6 and is more pleasant to drive on long journeys. But C is let down by it's ponderous heavy C series engine. In comparison to the Triumph Six which is a silky smooth torquey engine, the C is anything but, the low down torque is appalling, but once up and running it's a good cruiser. To make it as torquey as the GT6, I had to get rid of the 15kg flywheel and replace it with a lighten steel one weighing 6.5kg. The road handling is no worse than the GT6, one advantage is it less skittish than the GT6 on poor road surfaces due to weight and wider track, I've now come to like the car, but I would never buy a roadster version. With the changing legislation in the USA in the 70's saw the demise of the C and GT6, mind you when Ford bought out the V6 Capri in 1969, a real 4 seat GT, that was a real killer for these models, BL couldn't compete with Ford - end of story.

I can't recall where I saw the article, if I could I'd have linked it to you. Incidentally, a late pal owned a C roadster. I asked him once if I could have a go but when he said yes, I changed my mind, as he had owner driver only insurance and I didn't fancy a punch up if I'd put it through a hedge.
