British Rail Class 40 at 60 Years ~ East Lancashire Railway 14/04/2018

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Featuring Locos: 40013 40106 40135 40145 and D9009 (55009) 4 out of the 6 Class 40s are seen in this video. Filmed at Irwell Vale and Rawtenstall.
The British Rail Class 40 is a British railway diesel locomotive. A total of 200 were built by English Electric between 1958 and 1962. They were numbered D200-D399. They were for a time the pride of the British Rail early diesel fleet. Despite their initial success, by the time the last examples were entering service they were already being replaced on some top-link duties by more powerful locomotives. As they were slowly relegated from express passenger uses, the type found work on secondary passenger and freight services where they worked for many years, the final locomotives being retired from regular service in 1985.

Saw / cabbed many 40's in the mid-70's when I worked as a shunter at Blackburn goods yard. Wonderfully powerful and impressive machines...

Great video, thanks! My question : These 40's seem not have the same 'tractor' -sound as 37's , different engine perhaps or am i just wrong? Greets from Finland!

The Class 37s have an EE V12 where as the Class 40s have a EE V16.

  • @bjoe385

They do a bit under heavy load, the engine design is similar but the 37’s V12 is inter-cooled which seems to muffle the whistling sound make by EE’s non inter cooled engines like that in the class 40. The class 37 has about 14 more horsepower per cylinder and it revs 100 rpm higher than the engine in the class 40, also by virtue of being a V12 instead of a V16 the exhaust profile is different. I think it’s a combination of less whistle, higher rpm, more power per cylinder and different exhaust shape that leads to the different sound.

Actually the D200s came first (1958); the D6700s (Class 37) entered service from 1960.
