There was a comedian from years ago, Chis Titus, he said if the USA ever wanted to put the fear of God in her enemies we should simply send a dvd recording of ESPN2 showing what Americans do for fun (monster trucks, drag racing, boat racing, bull riding, etc.) then it may help them realize what we would do when we’re serious and they probably wouldn’t be our enemies anymore.

I've been to 3 NHRA events in person. The Castrol driver who said the ground shakes because of the power is not exaggerating, the ground does vibrate when the Top Fuel Dragsters and Funny Cars run. The last guy who spoke during the video was John Force. He's the winningest drag racer in history and one of the most colorful personalities in the sport as well. There are 3 main classes in NHRA. Top Fuel Dragsters and Funny Cars have identical engines but drive much different because of the cars wheelbases. The other class is Pro Stock, they look more similar to street cars. There are also a variety of "sportsman" classes that race during a race weekend. A lot of drivers in those classes race as a hobby.

I started as a young fan in the 1960's. There is absolutely nothing like being in the pits watching the crews overhaul the engines, transmissions, and clutches in 30 minutes to make the next race. Being in the stands next to the starting line you not only hear these massive beast engines, but you literally feel them rumble through your whole body. The noxious smells of burning rubber from the burnout; and fuel burning out the ends of the exhaust headers along with feeling that heat. And finally, that explosive launch of the vehicle like a launching rocket as it screams down the 1/4 mile track. Yes you see hear smell and feel every bit of it coursing through your body. A real thrill indeed.

Unfortunately, I think the drag strip in Fontana closed down permanently in 2021. Some neighbors complained about the noise and sued the speedway in 2012. John Force almost got it too a year or so after them when his cars chassis was ripped in half exposing him to the track. Its a hell of a sport and there are a ton of classes. ProMod, SuperComp, Prostock, Super Stock, X275, Outlaw Drag Radial, Outlaw Pro Street, Outlaw 10.5, AFuel Funnycar (Alcohol powered funnycars), there was an attempt at 'Super fuel' cars where they used 100% nitro but n/a, etc etc, etc.

Came for the NASCAR reactions, stayed for the NHRA reactions! I spent the last 4 summers out at my local dragstrip and we never had anything quite this powerful, but a few times a year we got treated by jet dragsters, which are their own type of beast. Instead of an engine driving the wheels, they're just one of the long dragsters with a jet engine strapped to it, thrusting the car up to 300+ in just a few seconds. Not quite sure if it's worth reacting to, but there's a good video out there by Driver61 called "Jet Dragsters: The Insane 320MPH Dragsters" that explains what they are, how they work and such compared to a normal dragster. There's a couple on-board clips in there that are actually from a different channel my brother, his friend, and I run called Drag Racing Weekly, we have quite a few good on-board GoPro videos of jet dragsters along with regular videos from outside the car if you wanna check those out too :) Also just for reference, in Driver61's video when talking about the engines coming from aircraft, he uses clips of a F-16 fighter jet, when most of the jet dragsters actually use jet turbines from helicopters, and some jet dragsters use a certain model of engine that can be found on old military light attack or training jet planes as well as helicopters. A small detail but the short answer is no, these things aren't actually powered by modern fighter jet engines. I'm an aviation nerd so anything related at all really excites me and I go off

Both are insane but NHRA is by far the craziest and most body thumping thing you will EVER experience. Words cannot describe it .......

Where I live in Charlotte we have the a drag strip near by called the Zmax dragway. It’s definitely my favorite to go to, because instead of two lanes, it has four! And what’s better than two monsters racing each other? Well 4 monsters of course!

I saw these in person at a dragway that wasn’t designed for Top Fuel dragsters or funny cars. It was really designed for your average hobby cars running mid 10 second quarter miles. This meant that the stands were really close to the track. When they hosted Top Fuel, we were dangerously close to the track and cars. The exhaust from those dragsters made our eyes sting and tear up as well as making it a bit difficult to breathe. When they take off, you have to hold your ears, or it feels like someone is compressing your head. I tried the first run without putting my hands over my ears, and I regretted it. The rumble is insane, you feel it in your chest and it feels so incredibly powerful. By the end of the day, we were all covered head to toe in bits of rubber that came from all the burnouts they did to heat up the tires. It was an amazing, painful and very uncomfortable day, but it was well worth it to see those things rocket down the track at about 280mph (this was a while ago, they’ve gotten faster) and like a 4 second quarter mile.

Check out "The Most Insane Dragster Ever" (about the Jade Warrior), "How 10,000 BHP Can Snap a Dragster" (about the forces that can lead Top Fuel dragsters to snap in half), "JET Dragsters: The Insane 320MPH Dragsters" (about jet-powered dragsters that used to be used in competition, but now are just seen in exposition runs), and "How Dragster Tyres Accelerate to 335MPH in 3.6 Seconds" (about the immense grip the rear tires on dragsters get [hence why you see them fold at 2:29]), all by Scott Mansell (no relation to Nigel Mansell) at Driver61. 3:23 This is John Force, the most successful drag racer in NHRA history. He holds the record for most consecutive championships in the NHRA, and I think in all of motorsports, at 10 in a row. He also has three daughter who have been active over the past decade and a half (Brittany Force, Ashley Force Hood, and Courtney Force-Rahal). Brittany Force is the second woman to win an NHRA championship (which she did in 2017), after Shirley Muldowney in 1977, 1980, and 1982. 4:34 Yes, there are four classes: Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, and Pro Stock Motorcycle.

I've been watching drag racing in the UK since the mid 1970s - drag racers are the best people going. What other major motorsport lets you wander around the pits, chat to the teams and watch them rebuild cars. When I retired I started road tripping in the US where drag racing is major. I'm also into NASCAR and have driven a NASCAR around a few tracks including 16 laps of Daytona. Save up and go to Talladega, a whole weekend of awesomeness, pick-ups on Saturday, cars on Sunday. I loved it, wonderful people in Alabama!

When i use to go with my dad as a kid they use to have actual jet engine cars they would do at night literally a jet on wheels. for sure do more nhra videos

You can watch all kinds of videos of funny cars and top fuel dragsters with the headphones cranked up. That doesn't cut it. You have to be in the stands at the start line at least once in your lifetime. The sound vibration is so violent that the seating area shakes, you feel it through your body, the nitromethane smells evil and the odor of burnt tires is unforgettable. We took a deaf kid to the drags and he had to cover his ears because he got the sensation that angry wasps were flying inside his head.

I was at Raceway Park the day after the Scott Kalitta passed away in 2008. The reason they shortened the the tracks. Hearts we're extremely extremely heavy that day, couldn't imagine what it was like to have actually been there. His schuttes didn't deploy and the sand traps at the end of the runway didn't either. He hit the retaining wall at over 300mph. Car exploded immediately.

I'm the director of Emergency Services at Raceway Park, E'town. The cars are extremely safe the last fatality was at my track. The cars accelerate to 100 mph in less then 1 second with 4 to 5 G's pushing the driver back. On the other hand when they pull the chutes they get almost the same G load in reverse ! It slams them into the belts. They wear nomex underwear, a 5 layer firesuit plus gloves, helmet etc.

If you really want a shock go watch the NHRA Top Fuel motorcycles. Spiderman McBride ran a 5.50 time at 265.00 mile per hr in the 1/4 mile. That guy carries his balls around in a wheel barrow. To explain to our British spectator: The "funny cars" and the "rails" are the most powerful and extreme but there are many classes other than these beasts which are multi-million dollar business. The old "D-class" rail features six cylinder, naturally aspirated engines where 100 mph is rarely cleared. There are Pro-street cars which can be driven on the street. These vehicles are $10's of thousands. I had a friend that went from sprint cars to drag boats...

Used to live not *too* terribly far from Rockingham Dragway in North Carolina, been to one NHRA event ages ago (Richmond, Virginia). These guys are NOT exaggerating what they're describing, but you have to be there in person. It's *insanely* loud so you'll need ear protection, and events can garner probably 30,000 on race day. Al.so, to those that don't know, at the start, they are doing a burn out, which is basically spinning the rear tires super fast, so they heat up and become way more sticky. They do this right before the launch for maximum traction. Therse engines are rebuilt after EVERY run.
