5:38 it actually did mention Kennedys assassination before right after the cuban missile crisis when he said “unfortunately for him his presidency was to end with one”. It was referring to he got shot in dallas texas by a sniper and became the 4th, and last president to be assassinated while in office. But yea I agree they should of focused a little bit more time on that cause that was huge for the American public at the time.

Brings back a lot of memories for me. Was stationed at a Nike hurcules missile site in Germany 1979 and served during most of the Cold War. Watching at check point Charlie as the wall came down, looking at the faces of both east and west Germans solidified my resolve for defending democracy and serving the causes of freedom. I have seen many places and many peoples throughout my many years of service but I will never forget the that look of tyranny as it changed to freedom on the faces of youth for generations to come.

US Congress never officially declared war on Vietnam, so many people (mostly veterans of the conflict in Vietnam), call it the "Vietnam Conflict" rather than the "Vietnam War".

9:31 basically the US was scared to death about the spread of communism, and to combat this they took every opportunity to try and expand capitalism instead. The USSR was scared to death about the spread of capitalism, and to combat this they took every opportunity to try and expand communism instead. The US was also better equipped than the USSR be they were more afraid of communism the the USSR was of capitalism. So you wind up with two superpower trying to gain an advantage on any front, and are willing to go to any length to get that advantage. (This is also why the miracle on ice was such a huge event, sports was one of those fronts I just mentioned.)

13:35 yup. Its called NORAD. It includes Canada as well and Thule Air Force Base in Greenland. Keep in mind that the most direct path from Moscow to the US is basically over the North Pole.

Beesley, I joined at 18 because of this shit in 84. We out spent them almost into bankruptcy building all kinds of military stuff including Star Wars and our economy was stronger by far. Even Japan's economy was stronger than theirs. Japan could build more planes, tanks, ships than the USSR. They tried to keep up. But when the First Gulf War happened and they saw their entire military arsenal that they sold to Iraq (tanks, planes, missiles) go down in flames to our (and your) militaries with ease...That was the last straw. The Cold War dead in my eyes. Damn I'm getting hard just thinking about this shit.

Funny enough, Gorbachev and, I believe, his granddaughter appeared in a Russian commercial for Pizza Hut. Nowadays it is considered one of the worst commercials ever made but Pizza Hut and MacDonald’s are still popular in Russia to this day.

He is extremely generous to Nixon when it comes to the Vietnam War. Nixon, with the help of Anna Chennault, stalled the peace talks in Vietnam in order to win the election in 1968.

The S in SDI stands for Strategic Defense Initiative, not Space...and it was mostly a bluff. The idea was to talk a lot of big talk about America developing a system to shoot down incoming missiles, and spend some money to make it look like we were gonna actually try to do it. That would scare the crap out of the Soviets, which it did, all so that it would be easier to negotiate with them in the next round of arms limitation talk, which it was. The other big big problem with this Oversimplified is that he completely ignores the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. That even and its aftermath was hugely impactful and absolutely contributed to the fall of the USSR, so leaving it out entirely is a huge mistake.🖖✌

SDI was to be space-based defense platform utilizing lasers to shoot down ICBMs launched by USSR. Unfortunately, it proved too costly and never got past prototypes. It eventually lead to new space-age materials which allowed for the development of Stealth technology used in B-2 bombers & F-112 & F-35 fighters.

13:34 I don’t know about a “Nuke shield” but I do know That Israel has a Weapon system that works like a Shield, it’s called the Iron Dome and it destroys missles that are sent to attack Israel 🇮🇱, I don’t see why it wouldn’t be able to take out a Nuke, but it’s basically A “Missile Shield”. Google search; Israel Iron Dome. That is the closest thing I know of to a Nuclear Shield.

Vietnam is one of the most messed up wars ever. My dad enlisted because his IQ score was high enough to keep him out of combat as an officer, and the guys that did serve were treated like garbage by the hippies. The whole thing sucked and the guys that were over there getting killed while eating bugs to stay alive wore the brunt of it
