George Washington was one of the only men to NOT segregate his armies. Meaning both Black and White Americans fought side by side against the British.

There wasn't any Americans fighting the British. It was British against British. America came about after the revolution.

@@trytellingthetruth.2068 yes and no. The “British” that were living here at the time were still called Americans because this wasn’t considered Great Britain, it was called America, we were just British Colonies. So the people who lived here were still referred to as Americans even if they were British/Scottish/whatever else.

@@trytellingthetruth.2068 sorry to better explain that, anyone that was born over here was called American, even if they were of British descent. Because they were born over here and not in GB. At the time, since it wasn’t its own country, If you were born in GB but lived over here or whatever, then yeah you were still referred to as British. The land was still called the America’s and America, it just wasn’t an official country until our Declaration of Independence

@@TheJerseyNinja Britain's concept of "citizenship" during the colonial era was different to how we see it today. In the 1700's the British were known as "subjects" of the King. The colonists also considered themselves as "British subjects" and were regarded as such in Great Britain. It wasn't until after the Revolution that the colonists were no longer referred to as being British subjects.

  • @TheJerseyNinja

@@trytellingthetruth.2068 sure. But the term Americans was still used in a non official setting when referring the subjects in America. Not to mention, once the Declaration of Independence was signed, our country was technically born and therefore at that point in time it WAS Americans vs British. Just because Great Britain hadn’t recognized our independence yet doesn’t mean anything. As of July 4th 1776, it was Americans living in the United States of America fighting against invaders of Great Britain who were looking to retake over the country and reestablish their rule. We were no longer a British Colony or under their control at that point in time. So technically it was Americans vs British during 99% of the war

I've heard it said that the reason the UK don't teach this in the schools is that from Britain's perspective it was only a minor war because at the time for Britain the real war was with France which does make sense but from our perspective this war means everything because from these humble beginnings we are now the world's only superpower. I will add, however, that the way this is taught to us isn't, look how awesome we are cause we kicked Britain's butt. The message is, we created an incredible system of Government and the longest-lasting Constitution and they barely managed to survive a war we should have lost were it not for Providence and and iron will of the colonists to form an independent nation. Our Constitution truly is an awesome document whose principles the world's most prosperous nations follow for the most part, which I think is testament to the genius that went into creating it. The Constitution, the highest law of our land, and the system of Government which descends from it, truly are the takeaway from the Revolutionary War. Otherwise, it would have just been another war in a long series of war punctuating the timeline of human history, and not even a significant war at that. Yes we have natural geographical strategic military advantage and yes we are rich with natural resources but there have been plenty of nations impoverished and dysfunctional who sit on top of a wealth of natural resources because their cultures had degenerated and Governments were tyrannical. What has caused us to have such incredible unprecedented success starting from nothing has always been the Constitution based on a set of universal principles, and for those who say it's basically the "Magna Carta" I urge you to read it more closely because it is SO much more.

Part of Washington's brilliance was that he understood that he didn't have to "win". He could run, evade, and, pick when to fight. He understood that, as long as he maintained some sort of army in the field, the British couldn't win.

Most foreigners wouldnt know this, but there was not a 2 term limit on president until the 1951, after Franklin D Roosevelt did his 4th term (granted he was a wartime leader for WWII so its good we had continuity). FDR was the only one who did more than 2 terms and, up until then, it was just a tradition set by Washington. People attempted to run for 3rd terms, but the American people said "nah, george said two is enough"

"The Patriot" starting Mel Gibson takes place during the Revolution, but from a historical view point it's god awful (like Braveheart). You then have the miniseries "John Adams", starting Paul Giamatti. This show is better historically, but it only follows the life of one of our founding fathers. "Last of the Mohicans", starring Daniel Day Lewis, is a work of fiction and takes place a little before the Revolution during the Seven Years War it could give a bit of insight of some things leading up to the Revolution. Then there's "The Crossing", starring Jeff Daniels as George Washington, about the Battle of Trenton where he defeated the Hessians. There is also a TV series called "Turn" all about Washington's spy network. There are also tons of documentaries on the subject (way too many to list), so just look up American Revolution and you will be slammed with videos.

There are very few films about the American Revolution. Back during World War I, the Brits demanded that the Amercans not make any such films. Right up into the 1960s, the British informed the Hollywood studios that no films about the American revolution would be allowed to be shown in Britain or the Commonwealth. Further, any studios that made such films would be seen as hostile to Britain.

So much American iconography is actually glossed over with the highlights to this video. As many other commenters have pointed out, Benedict Arnold's betrayal of the US has led to his name becoming synonymous with "backstabber" or "breaker of trust" in the States. That painting of Washington's troops crossing the Delaware River is one of the most enduring images of the Revolution. That brief mention of James Armistead Lafayette as a free man neglects to mention that the surname Lafayette is borrowed from the Marquis de Lafayette, a French nobleman who had served as a Major General for the Continental Army (Armistead had served under him as one of many black slave troops operating as spies). And most famously, Washington remains to this day the only president in US history not aligned with any one political party. I recommend you react to two scenes from the musical Hamilton: "Yorktown" which depicts the final battles of the Revolution, and "One Last Time" which details Washington's decision to retire from his role as President despite the public still near unanimously holding faith in him at the conclusion of his second term.

If you're looking for a movie about the American Revolution, I recommend "Revolution," a movie made in 1985 starring Al Pacino. That's the best one I've seen by far. But I also recommend the TV series "Turn: Washington's Spies," which ran from 2014 to 2017. Top-notch television. Probably the most famous movie about the American Revolution, though, is Mel Gibson's "The Patriot" from 2000... That movie takes a lot of shit, especially from British critics, because of its lack of historical accuracy, but if you are able to just ignore that and enjoy the ride, it's a good movie. Still, start with "Revolution," though...

A cool thing about the Revolutionary War is that this is when the submarine was invented. Its one use was to take place a bomb at the bottom of a ship and blow it up. Sadly it failed at placing the bomb but still. This happened in Long Island Sound off the coast of Connecticut. Today, Connecticut is the supplier of submarines for the US and the US Coast Guard Academy is there too. Being from Connecticut, I've always loved that little bit of history.

Hi British Guy, interesting videos. I am a little surprised that American History is not taught to a small degree in Great Britain. Not because the war was between the US and Great Britain, but due to the amount of influence the US has had on the world since WW 2. So I did learn something new too. You asked if there are movies or videos about the revolution, there are a ton. However, I would encourage one in particular here on KZread, George Washington the 1983 miniseries with Barry Bostwick as Washington. As you mentioned Washington is a very interesting person in history. I doubt the US would exist without him, king George the third should have given his royal commission as an officer, you would have kept the US. The miniseries is in 30 minute segments. I think you would be impressed with the show, learn more about the history of the revolution time period. Honestly, I would love to hear your take on the show and history as well.

If you watch the Patriot with Mel Gibson, just know before hand that, while it is very entertaining, it is so wildly inaccurate as to some major parts. It portrays the British as acting worse than they did. Especially false was an incident with a church. I won’t spoil it but you’ll know now if you watch that it did not happen and it was taken from a incident Nazis did in WW2. Second, it portrays slave owners as these benevolent parental like figures, which is, I mean, common now.

Dog, I mean it's not particularly historically accurate but watch The Patriot starring Mel Gibson, it's a damn good war movie, and truly brutal.

The British mostly defeated themselves in this war while the Americans harassed them enough to force them into bad decisions. Saratoga is an example. If you go to that part of the country even now, outside the towns & cities, it is still a howling wilderness, so you can imagine what it was like 240 years ago. The British went into that wilderness with a modern army and all its train of supplies like they were invading a civilized European country and were caught up in a disaster. Also, their alliances with the Indian tribes were equally disastrous as the Indians would massacre civilians indiscriminately, which included those loyal to the crown, alienating all sides from the British cause, and then would desert the British in battle when the battle got too hot, leaving them to fend for themselves in unfamiliar territory against an army thirsty for revenge because of the previous atrocities. This isn't politically correct history, but it's what actually happened.

I mean, you kinda just sit there and don't react or even give your take or opinions about anything. Just constructive criticism. But once you open up a bit I'm sure you will find great success. Good luck.
