Saw Steve M with the Dregs live at my college in 1981. Totally blew me away. Effortlessly moved from bluegrass to jazz to classical to rock! What a talent. Great analysis Fil.

I've seen Steve with the Dregs as well as with his band. The musicianship was without peer. Not just from Steve but every musician on stage.

Steve also played a solo on 'Undercover Lover' for a band called Art In America in 1983. He co-arranged all the songs on the album. Extremely talented. Around 9:30 of your video all of the smiles were in sync. The joy of great music never dies. Nice choice Fil.

I got to see Steve back in the 1990’s in Augusta, Georgia where he actually lived during his teenage years. After that show while the roadies were breaking down the equipment I got an autograph and a cd. We stood there and talked for about 15 minutes. He was so nice to me and everyone else that was standing there. He’s probably the nicest musician I’ve ever met.

I've never been to a Dregs or Steve Morse show where Steve (and Rod Morgenstein too, way back then) didn't come out to shake hands and sign autographs and talk to the fans. (Ditto for when Steve was with Kansas ---- although none of the other members of Kansas members came out with to chat with us,). I have not only an autographed Dregs of the Earth promo poster, but an original LP copy of "The Great Spectacular", the record they recorded for class credits while enrolled at the Unuversity of Miami; the band was kind enough to autograph it and were amazed to see it, as most of them were destroyed by a flood in T Lavitz' sisters' garage.

I can only confirm what Norman Sykes said about Steve Morse being one of the nicest musicians ever. Met him with Deep Purple more than a decade ago and although it was very late and more than an hour after the show he was so nice with that handful of fans who catched him coincidentally. He was surprised we found him, but smiling all over his face and signing everything. One fan had a gift for the drummer, but did not meet him and Steve suggested he would make sure he'd get it and took it with him. What a guy! I just thought he would be much taller. You get this impression when you see him on stage!

Totally agree about Steve. I've seen him twice in concert and he's always very approachable and NEVER arrogant (like so many). He came to a cookout that our band's lead singer hosted and sat right in front of me. He played my guitar while I shot two rolls of film - yes actual film. Just insane talent, especially considering he wrote all of what you hear. Dave LaRue is also a super nice guy, and a world-class bassist.

Nice, probably the same club in Augusta I saw him in, around November 1989. Last night in the US Army for me, and I was so happy to be done with that madhouse. They had a ZZ Top type band as the warm-up. I had a convo with the roadies first, then the guy that used to do the "dusty vaults" radio program late at night on Sunday. He loved King Crimson and I drove a CD to him to do on the show once from the army base. I think I may have given him a Dixie Dregs CD to play as well. Anyway, Steve and that guy were talking, so I thought, here's my chance. He is such a genuinely nice man. I must have looked like the usual guitar player drooling and barely being coherent.

One of the best guitarists to have ever laid hands on a guitar. A master of all styles and guitars, you'd be hard pressed to think of anyone so talented and versatile on so many 6 string instruments.

Absolutely, unequivocally correct Peter.

Steve Morse is such a legend. So clean, so fast and the versatility in his compositions were tremendous. And his bandmates were stellar as well. I still have my original Industry Standard and The Introduction on vinyl. Break them out often to hear Steve and crew tear it up.

Steve Morse is my favorite guitarist and the Dregs are my all-time favorite band. Thank you for the bit of history Fil. Saw the Dixie Dregs/Dregs/Steve Morse Band live more than 10 times and to watch Steve Morse's technique live is an amazing experience. Rod, Andy, Dave, T, and the fiddler's were all amazing musicians.

Listen to Tumeni Notes from the same live. Possibly one of hardest songs to play, ever. He playing arpeggios with alt picking and not sweep.

It went "the sound you heard Saturday night was the sound of guitar cases clicking closed and closet doors slamming shut because after seeing the Steve Morse play, what's the point?"

I am now retired and I make every day a special day by checking out your analysis videos Fil. I very much look forward to them. I had forgotten about Steve. Thanks for bringing him back to me. Great job on the analysis. See you on the next one!!

Love Steve's style, I'm definitely a big fan.That bass was incredible in sound and style,very nice Fil.

We know Steve is good, but this vid shows such great band chemistry, ty Fil!

Steve Morse has that same country-jazz sensibility to his playing that Toby Caldwell did, but man he takes it to anew level. I saw these guys when they first toured and I was really blown away by how Larue will throw down some funk popping and slapping to counter Morse doing some old school bluegrass flatpicking then jump into some bebop thumping. These whole band was so freaking tight live.

The Dregs are my all time favorite band. Steve Morse is on another level. Thank you!

Steve is an amazing player and the nicest guy you could meet.

Been listening to Steve since Freefall by the Dixie Dregs came out. He and Dave both collaborate with people like John Petrucci and Joe Satriani. 2006 G3 Petrucci and LaRue do a version of Glasgow Kiss.

I have seen him about a dozen times with different line ups . I just saw this line up in Westbury , Long Island , NY last month . FYI : He is left handed and plays right handed . Always top shelf musicians . And never ceases to amaze .

Thanks for doing another analysis on Steve, my favorite player. Your thoughts on the composition needing to overshadow the player's ability are well thought out. A little note, the album version of "General Lee" features Steve trading licks with Albert Lee. That's probably pointed out somewhere in the comments by some other Morse fanatic. Anyway, awesome commentary!

Great Video again, Fil. My flat-mate introduced me to Steve Morse. I've always loved his tone, and his melody writing. Even in a blues, he writes melodies that are startling with the notes he includes.

Saw Steve in the 90s. Jeff Watson played a few songs with him to close the show. They were burning for sure . Jeff was doing 8 finger tapping/rolls and Steve is just insane.

I saw the Steve Mores Band in San Francisco in the 1980’s,…at Boss Scaggs Club,…it was standing room only,…he had the full band!,..including a violin player,….and when I tell you they were all top notch players!,..I mean that!,…the music was very complicated,…and intricate,.,.moving a mile a minute,….that was one of the best shows I ever saw!

Best Rhythm Section I've heard in awhile, the bass player is astounding and was all over it. Lots of cool sound and I kind of wish I got into them when I was younger, my loss.

I've seen Steve morse band Dregs, Dixie dregs more times than I can remember. He's the only guitarist that regularly gives me the chills when he plays. Just a remarkable talent.

Dave LaRue was also the bassist on your Satriani video. Another skill set Morse had was that he had a commercial pilot's licence, and used to fly his own small plane to out of town gigs. He once said that he had to practice his picking technique especially hard because he was actually left handed playing a right handed guitar. I saw this band once, and Morse had this pedal where his heel would stay still, but the toe of his boot would pivot to the right or left, or somewhere in between. That is how he would switch between two amp stacks which were set up with different guitar sounds, or choose a combination if he wanted. When I heard the "What If" album, parts of it reminded me of a country version of the Mahavishnu Orch., and many years later I saw him playing a solo acoustic set, opening for that later Mahavishnu group with Jonas Hellborg on bass and Bill Evans on sax.

Best overall guitarist that has ever lived.

I remember on "Tumeni Notes" the bass player keeping up with all the notes he was playing.

You finally got to Steve Morse in his prime! SM is one of the big four along with Alan Holdsworth, John McLaughlin, & Al DiMeola. One highlight from SM’s curriculum vitae was in 1983 when he played with the classical/flamenco/acoustic trio of DiMeola/McLaughlin/DeLucia, image all 4 of these guys shredding flamenco licks!

Fil speaking to the low record sales and loss of record contracts reminded me of when in the mid-late 80s, Al Dimeola couldn’t get a record contract. Speaks to the low music IQ of most of the public, particularly in the U.S.

I had the pleasure of getting to be friends with Steve at San Diego State about 1980-81. He and the Dregs played the one club there all the time. Great dude!

Steve and Dave ,are so clearly so tight,and enjoying it so much,Steve Morse,is a stellar player and crosses genres ,effortlessly, top bloke.

Up there with the all time great guitarists. I love this group. I love the Dixie Dregs. I love his work with Deep Purple and love even more that when finally inducted into the hall of fame, Morse played Blackmore's solo from Smoke On The Water, note for note. Absolutely a genius at his craft.

I met all those guys in Atlanta in the late 80s. As well as the Violin player, Oconner? Can't remember now.

Great video. I used to go see Dixie Dregs all the time back before this. Still have several of their early albums on vinyl.

This is such a great analysis of Steve's playing - and Dave as well. Ever wondered why do many guitar greats are named Steve? Love your playing and your channel Fil.

Steve Morse is a genius on the guitar and his technical ability is just jaw dropping to behold. HOWEVER, I have heard him and so many other great guitarists attempt to play Smoke on the Water like the original or any way they want. Not one of them even comes close to Ritchie on a bad night let alone when he is in the mood! Back to the upload, great video and what a trio.

Move along, folks! Nothing to see here but sheer genius and mastery. Lordy lord, is he brilliant, as are the bassist and drummer.

My guitarist best friend took me to see the Dixie Dregs around '82 or so, utterly amazing! What a gaggle of talent!

High Tension Wires is my favorite album by Steve. Also, he said on his instructional VHS tape I have is that he is left-handed. Amazing!

Fil I have this album and saw this tour in the mid eighties. Jerry Peek was the Bass player and Rod Morgenstein was the drummer and they were amazing. I had never heard of Steve prior to seeing his band play at Tipatina's in New Orleans that night. He blew me away. I saw him again in the mid nineties at Westchester Community College in New York. He played with Dave LaRue and a drum track machine and we sat right in front of him, he absolutely shredded. Tumeni Notes is a song which show cases his speed. Cheers thanks for the analysis.

I checked online, It's actually an "Ernie Ball" "Music Man" Steve Morse signature model. I thought it was a Peavey myself. 👍

I saw Steve Morse, Albert Lee and one of the Ball bros.( ala Ernie Ball ) play a small venue in San Luis Obispo CA. Man it was so cool to watch these guys jam. Albert Lee was kicking butt with flash fire Country Picking. Steve was great but Albert took first chair that night. Once again great anaysis Fil.🎶👍🏾♥️😎

This is a great show to watch if you are a Steve Morse fan. The video and audio are great and they hit on so many styles. Steve developed a degenerative arthritis problem (bone on bone with a couple fingers locking up) over a decade ago and has had to change his style. He is still a great guitarist, but this concert shows why he is one of the top guitarists of all time. I was fortunate to have seen the Dregs play live several times around 1980, and the entire band was loaded with talent. Thanks for posting. Dave LaRue shows why he's one of the top bass players out there, following Steve note for note on complex parts.

The last time I saw Steve live was when he got the original Dixie Dregs back together for a tour a few years ago. I didn't know about his right hand problems until I saw him at that show. Sounds like it's never going to get better and he has had to change his picking technique completely in order to be able to play at all. In an interview he talked his hand being worn out after about 50 years of intense practice. The bones in his hand no longer have any cartilage between them which makes playing using his normal technique very painful. Another viewer mentioned using Highland Wedding in his own ceremony which is very cool. My wife and I have talked for years about renewing out vows using that song as part of our ceremony and doing it in the UK. Hasn't happened,,, yet.... Thanks Fil for doing this one. There are others from Steve you could do in the future from this same show or from his instructional videos.

**I met Steve Morse in New York City back in the 80's. He & John Mc Laughlin were waiting for their limo. Out of no where came 3 beautiful model looking chicks, and we're all over Steve. All 5 got in the limo and took off. I did manage to shake thier hands and get an autograph.**

Great analysis! Saw Steve and the Dixie Dregs years ago at a club and they were great. Had to put the headphones on after hearing your comment about the bassist and glad I did as those were great runs!

i Fil, I loved the bit discussing the technical ability of some players, having to play a simple song, and their level is well above it, but they are playing for the song and play the most melodic thing. Its great to see, just never go to see Ynqwie Malmsteen live. I saw him in the 90s and it was just 90 minutes of ultimate wankery from start to finish, after 30 minutes we walked out. utter bore fest. Now im not knocking Malmsteen, technically he was great back in the day and he followed on from Blackmore in the 'Neo classical' style he adopted (he seems quite sloppy now as he is clearly not maintaining his accuracy the way he used to), but there are unfortunately some players who just don't have much idea of how to create passages of toned down playing to build up to a big release. A good example of this - Just listen to Malmsteens version (with Dio on vocals) of Aerosmiths 'Dream on'. He plays more notes in the first 30 seconds than most good guitar players would need to throughout the whole song.

Man those high tops! lol. I saw several variations of Steve Morse live during the 80's in Houston and Austin,a few with Eric Johnson on the bill. I dig his right hand technique. One of many of my favorite players!

Steve Morse is genius composer, musician and guitarist. You have to be self a musician to understand how good he s!

I'll put Steve Morse up against anyone when it comes to guitar ! Best ever !

Don't forget that the "clean sound" sections he's playing are the Albert Lee parts on the original album. So he's basically playing the part of one of the best chicken pickers ever, then he switches over to his own part (which kicks butt!).
