I sat next to Edgar on a long flight. I didn’t recognize him and we had a wonderful cross country conversation about a range of topics. When he introduced himself as “Edgar” on his way to a gig in Topeka I realized who he was. Very nice man. He invited me to the Heart concert he was opening for as his guest and I had a great time.

Here it is May of 2023 and I am listening to this again. I love that I can go through your videos and enjoy them again. Especially if I have had a rough day!
I had the pleasure of sitting with Edgar on a cross country flight several years back. I didn’t recognize him and we had a spirited conversation about a variety of things; favorite authors, etc.. when the conversation came around to the purpose of our respective trips I explained that I had a ‘gig’ in KC and he told me he had a gig in Topeka. My gig was teaching a class….he explained his was “opening for ‘the Girls’l…I asked, “The Girls?” “Yes, Heart….” Then he introduced himself as “Edgar” and I immediately knew who my new ‘friend’ was. He then asked if I was free the following evening and invited me to the concert as his guest! What a wonderful man. His virtuosity during the opening was epic. Heart was great, of course, but his opening act outshone the ‘Girls’ that night.

WOW, would I have LOVED to be in your shoes (seat?)....when "Frankenstein" first came out, I was totally mesmerized by the "strange" drums, coming out of the one side of the stereo!! Bought a "standard" drum set as a teen (59 now!), but always longed to have the timbales....I now have my dream set up, a percussionist set, including 10 timbales.....
Such an astounding amount of talent in this clip it just completely surpasses the majority of "music" that gets put out today.
No words for this Fil! Simply Extraordinary groove and the Brothers were 2 of the best musicians to ever live!!! Rock On!!!
I was a junior in high school when this came out. You know how people say I wish we'd appreciated it back then? Well we actually did appreciate it back then. I feel lucky.
This is the line up I saw in 1973. A girl & I "spare changed" over $30 at school, "To send 2 underpriveledged kids to the Edgar Winter Concert." Went to the Civic Center I bought an "orchestra seat" 8 row almost center, for $5!!! They went for $5.50. Great concert! During one tune, they all took turns playing all the instruments. I was AMAZED. (A friends mom drove 7 of us to the concert, in her station wagon.) Great band, their timing, the breaks, fabulous. Edgar was a true multi-instrumentalist. Heard an interview where he & Johnny, said in their early days, when they needed another instrument Edgar learned it! First piano. Heard "Frankenstein" on an underground FM station, in the 10th grade! I was blown away. It hadn't hit the regular stations, there was still a huge AM audience then. I bought the album ($3.50), my Mom had an absolute melt down, when she saw the cover! Still "They Only Come Out At Night" is a masterpiece. Not even a semi throw away tune on the album. Wish I still had it.
The 70"s was jam packed with awesomeness.

Johnny and Edgar have to be my favorite Rock n roll brothers along with Angus and Malcolm Young
Simply...Excellent, Unique work, Edgard W., Rick D. and the others guys.
Was just on EW's website and the dedication to his wife Monique is so beautiful it made my heart soar! Every year, for the past 40 years, they renew their wedding vows and take a honeymoon. They have no children, and I think that exclusivity is part of why they are so close.
I was 14 when this came out, the studio version I thought was around 3.5 minutes and was incredible even in that toned down version. The whole group are killing it, but Edger is unbelievable with that keyboard, then the ear melting sax solo, then the drums, then the synthesizer and his smashing the keyboard... I really really love this, as I did in '73 when it was originally released.

I'm sure glad I found this one. The players are playing each and every note in real time absolutely live with no background dubs or extraneous overlapping effects. Astoundingly fun to watch and listen to. All 4 of these guys are great in their own right. BTW, Dan Hartman wrote and sang the Edgar Winter song "Free Ride".
Dan Hartman (lead vocals and guitar intro riff on "Free Ride") playing the bass here. As a solo artist Hartman in the late 70s had a big soft rock hit with "I Can Dream About You" and "Instant Replay" with Vincent Cusano (Vinnie Vincent) playing guitar on the latter. Rick Derringer played the lead solo on Al Yankovic's "Eat It", had a huge hit with Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo and sang lead vocals and played the guitar solo for The McCoys big mega hit back in the 1960s "Hang on Sloopey." There are some super talented individuals playing right here. Amazing! Thanks for your great commentary, Fil.

OMG, this is EPIC! I saw them in Lincoln, NE when this first came out. No one had heard anything like it. Thank you for the memories!
Oh be still my flashbacks!! Both Edgar and Johnny Winter were sooooo ahead of their times, and as different as night and day musically. I can remember the reaction to this particular song, especially towards the end of the night when everyone at the party was totally buzzed, the host would play this, and we were ready for round two🤣🤣
How on earth did so much talent get divided between those two brothers
There was so much creativity, uniqueness and talent back then. And there seemed to be a bit more freedom of expression accepted by record companies in those days. What has gone wrong with the industry ? The internet seems to be the outlet for creative expression these days.

The record companies went to the "Formula" soon after this. I know they have a lot of fans, but I saw Rush before they had an album out. They opened for Hawkwind, believe it or not. We (the crowd) weren't very impressed, the consensus seemed to be, they sounded like Zep. Any way they made millions. But it used to be, a band/artist had to be distinctive, they couldn't sound like any one else. Now, the modern rock seems a blur, to me. I'm reduced to listening to the "Classic Rock Stations". There have been jams I liked since the late 80s, but I started listening to R&B then, now it's laughable IMO. Went through my Reggae phase in the late 70s, early 80s, after my guitar hero died. Any way, there was a lot of talent during that era. Shame I'm old enough to remember when that was the new music!😂
A classic that will never be forgotten. And he has the voice of an angel.
I can hardly believe that I went to a Johnny Winter concert in the gymnasium of the Vo-tech High School in my home town in Sussex County New Jersey. I was only like 13yrs. old, and I was absolutely amazed! Edgar was there too...but I sure know I didn't fully appreciate what I was hearing, that's for sure. I think it was in 1969 or '70. So, when "Frankenstein" came out, in '73, I was a junior in H.S., and school was only a week or 2 before we let out for summer vacation. Was a great song for the background music of frantic teenagers so ready for school to let out for the summer! It set the tone...can you imagine what it was like in the "Winter's" home as a kid? Wow! Thanks again Fil...trying to do some catch up with all your analysis of the great ones🤗 of music...glad I found your chan.!🆒👍😎also, I have to add, the rumor was that Johnny was a friend of someone that went to Sussex County Vo-Tech, and that's why he did a concert in the gym of a h.s., that probably only held about 2-300 people at its max capacity. That kid had street cred after that favor, no doubt. If true... l
This was a huge hit in the US. Oh dear, so much fun listening to your interpretation of music from my teen years! Rock on, indeed. The Winter brothers were so cool.
