yes, indeed, shame, as for the mood and sound I put him in the same league as Knopfler, Clapton, Gilmour, Mayer however, in terms of technique he's not on that level, closer to JJ Cale perhaps but who cares? He's brilliant anyway

I am so glad you decided to review and analize this ultra talented man... I loved him back in his earlier days, yes 'Fool if you think it's over' And also another favorite of mine, is Working on it" He is a man who beat pancreatic cancer, I have always been a fan.. AND married to the same woman all these years, Just a fantastic singers, guitar player, performer.... SO glad you did this analysis. Love him

Apart from his amazing voice and guitarmanship, Chris comes from the same town as the wife - hence he has always been a firm favourite with us. We saw him live about 12 years ago and I was blown away by his guitar sound. The next week I went and tried out an Italia Maranello and so impressed that I bought it. Fine guitar and a great price. For those who haven't listened to Chris' work - skip the commercial stuff and listen to his post-illness work such as the Dancing Down the Stony Road album - griity and soulful, the music reflects his pain as a result of his illness - amazing stuff

I'm absolutely madly in love with Chris! Have been since "Fool if You Think It's Over" came out. I was terrified when he got Pancreatic cancer,and so relieved when he made it through. My favorite song of his is one I cant listen to without sobbing my heart out. "Tell Me There's A Heaven".

I was listening to Chris Rea's "Road to Hell" last night and thinking he'd make for a great analysis. Nothing like a jolt of synchronicity to send shivers up the spine! Many thanks!

A great blues artist who is often overlooked despite having record sales that other better known blues artists would envy, ive always liked his music and have several of his albums starting with On The Beach when I first discovered him.

Loved The Road to Hell album. Especially Texas (since I am from Texas) and You Must Be Evil. Great album. Never get tired of listening to it. Thanks for spotlighting him!

Texas pride, even though I moved away when I was young. At the time I didn't have any say in the matter, since my dad said if I could buy my own diapers I could choose where I wanted to live. It was a hard choice but I made sacrifices to keep the family together.

This guy is a legend!

I am so beyond the moon that you featured Chris. He is an eternal gem. I discovered his music in the late 70's and was captivated by his voice and overall musicianship. Well done Fil! 😀

Under the influence of the great sounds of the Chris Rea's stratocaster I started playing the guitar. Chris Rea, Mark Knopfler and David Gilmour are my biggest inspirations .

Thank you so much Fil. I hope that those that aren't familiar with Chris, will google and search for more of his music. In 2001 he survived pancreatic cancer and more recently a bad stroke. So what you see in this more "subdued" video is a triumph in itself that he keeps going. His health wasn't good in 2006. And ten years later a stroke really disabled him, but not his spirit. I am from the USA Fil, and I have all of Chris' music, at least all I can find. His raspy unique voice, energy, lust for the beautiful things in life, and the heart he puts into his music is like no other. I can keep his music going in the background of my life and be quite upbeat and happy. That's Chris. My wife loves to hear his music in the house too. Special memories for us. Anyone that gives a thumbs down to this man, needs to go dig deeper into his music and his life. he is an everyman, Thank you so much for telling a bit of his story. I love his man.

Great rec, Dana. I knew there was another tune from him but couldn't put my brain on it. A once great radio station played this in the early '90s. Haven't heard it since then, but viewed rhe vid just now. Still sounded great. Thank you !!

He is NOT underrated.

I have always loved music and listened all my life, but now that I am retired, I find myself having a greater appreciation for it. Fil, you have really helped me with this and I thank you for it❣️Great analysis tonight.

Ty, Fil. Because of your feature I had to do some research on Chris. What a life he’s had, including major health probs. Pancreatic cancer, having most of his pancreas removed. Read that he takes 34 pills and 7 injections/day to compensate. Had a stroke, as well. Gotta love this guy and his passion for living.

Chris has that natural talent for grabbing your attention and holding onto it.

Love this man's music! He has so many great songs. One of my favs "Waiting for the Summer" has taken on a whole new meaning during Covid.

Chris has come through a serious illness ,and is still as good as ever ,a great song writer/singer,and underrated guitarist,glad you showcased him here.

Thanks for posting this. I have been a Chris Rea fan for only about two years now but I am huge fan of his music. At the age of 46, I got back into playing guitar last April and Chris Rea was one of my inspirations for getting back into guitar.

Love Chris Rea. It's like Leonard Cohn learned to play.

Hi there M P - have you ever tried the flamenco style finger picking patterns that LC uses on songs like "Suzanne"? Deceptively simple. The man could play.

Chris is a great player, his slide technique is impressive. Try watching "It's all gone" at the Montreux jazz festival, he really hammers it!

You hit the nail spot on as always, I was thinking his guitar skills were ghostly. What expression and emotion in his performance. Your expertise and the massive amount of time you spend on each artist is most appreciated. Bravo ^m^😎^m^

Way to go Fil! I hope that more Rock fans here in the states will discover Chris Rea. When I first played this for Linda she said it gave her goosebumps.

I just read that he wrote Fool, If You Think it's Over for his sister who was stood up at the altar. This makes me like him and that song even more

Chris has great control on his slide guitar. I wish I could play slide like that. Thanks for sharing and the analysis Fil.

Ooo, how haunting and melodic...love that awesome slide technique and great gravel in his voice! I got curious enough to read his Wikipedia page and found he has survived not only his indentured servitude to the record label, but after recovering from truly horrendous health troubles, Chris founded his own independent label. Thank you for all the work on this amazing musician.

There was a radio station back in the 70s in Los Angeles called KNX-FM that played the most wonderful mix of music, including Chris Rea's "Fool If You Think It's Over" and "Road To Hell"...love this choice as well! Thanks, Fil!! 🧡

Aaah, Chris Rea is SO great! Why don't they make guys like him anymore? So much emotion in his voice and guitar tone! No one has ever played fewer notes more effectively. Less is More, indeed! Both the beautiful songs "Josephine" and "Julia" are about his daughters.

Chris Rea, a brilliant enduring artist and very much his own man never, ever allowing himself to be pushed around by Record companies. His family always came first over too much touring which definitely cost him fame wise, money wise but for him it was about the music, never stardom. So he stated in interviews. A man true to his craft! Great analysis as usual, Fil!

(On the side, in reference during your telling of having to sing because the singer didn't show up. I joined a band to play harmonica, but the guitarist didn't show up. So there began my adventure as a guitarist. Lol!)

I just discovered that song a few months ago when I was listening to 70's music on Pluto TV and I was blown away immediately... I knew I had not heard that song since I was a little kid. ☺️ Great song, that.

At 9:10 you can hear the Chicago style blues kick in on the piano as he takes you thru where the blues comes from. Almost like a history lesson. My favorite song from Chris is Texas because it tells alot of what was going on in the good times of the 80s.And also about the bad times.

Chris Rea... A treasure from the Rock archives with one of the most Brilliant and unique voices in the music world. His guitare playing style is very recognisable too. This clip of Rea from 2006 i would say is not him at his best (Many pariods of illness, starting from the mid 90's have shook him). If you are a fan, check out his earlier music and you will see what i mean. I hope Chris is in good health these days.

The alternate picking on the banjo seems to become a tremolo, giving a somewhat mandolin effect. A very fine artist is Chris Rea. I can't imagine they sold much ice cream during the winter in Yorkshire!

Quite nice1 The missus bought the 'hit' tune album for Fool Don't You Think Its Over back in '79 or so. I thought he was good. Great he was still out there. I love the dynamics. Masterful playing.

Much underrated. Have always loved the fact that he has always been able to write and perform songs appropriate to his age and circumstances at the time. Songs about being a parent, about being away from home, songs about driving / racing cars, songs about being seriously ill and getting older, songs about losing your heroes (miles) . And of course a fine slide player - but always in service to the song.

Same Chris Rea, "Fool if you think it's over"? Great rythem pop song. Give it a listen, believe you'll enjoy it. It's simple, soft jazz, blues feel but very pretty. It's about his younger sister's, first broken heart. (I believe) Would love a reaction! Also thought us Yanks pronounced it Ray? IDK

It WAS about his sister! She attempted suicide after her first failed love, and that is what inspired "Fool If You Think It's Over." This guy was so underrated, especially in the US. He is an amazing guitar and piano player.

I think you did a great analysis on Chris Rea's style. Obviously, Chris is not the best guitar shredder ever but his unique voice and melodic guitar playing make him a very interesting artist. His music is instantly recognisable, and that's what makes a musician an artist.

Love Chris Rea's soulful voice and playing, Did he write a song for a commercial, wayyy back? A cigarette commercial, maybe not? He's very Original, unique voice and guitar playing, love this, and your analysis! Seems like he road off on a horse, whistling a catchy tune? No, not the 'Mulborro Man' (spelling)... Maybe it was for a beer commercial??

I've always loved Chris Rea's music. Even from his pop/rock days. But what really, really impressed me beyond anything else is his "Blue Guitars" album (or should I say albums, it's an 11-CD collection if I'm not mistaken) where he covers a beautiful collection of blues classics. I believe every album has it's own theme, like "city blues" etc... In that work - which for me is his magnus opus - you can clearly hear his deep love for the blues. I believe that one of the albums has original material and the rest are classic covers (not sure), but man, what a treat! If some of you haven't heard it and you love the blues, you gotta check it out! Thanks again for a great video, Fil!

Excellent,as usual. Reading the comments it's obvious that you are introducing artists to music lovers and players that they have never heard of.Brilliant! Iv'e always enjoyed Chris Rea's playing and singing.If I have a favorite track it's 'looking for a rainbow' just wish the final guitar solo had gone on for a bit longer.

Great video. I saw Chris Rea play live several decades ago and it was awesome. I'm surprised you haven't done a video on Steve Hackett yet. The father of hammer-on/pull-off and still an active guitarist known for his influence on other guitar players.

Informative as ever. Rea is an underrated musician. I don't think you've analysed them, but Boston's unique sound of Tom Scholtz's lead guitars and Brad Delp's superb range as a singer would make for an interesting video. I could suggest many songs, but the well known More Than a Feeling contains more or less their full range as a band. Thanks.

At one point, Chris' guitar playing brings to mind the late Hughie Thomasson of The Outlaws.

He started playing guitar 1972 (21 yrs) and was on Hank Marvin's Guitar Syndicate album that was published 1977 ? Not bad at all !

I bought his 'new light thru old windows' compilation album in 88, that's when I discovered him. sort of a compilation. the songs are re-recordings and in my opinion , better than the originals...so many good songs...

So sad I missed this live. After the last show I watched a live Rea show& Taimane. Love Gone Fishing❤️❤️❤️

You mentioned the other day in another video how certain artists may be popular in one part of the world but not in another. I honestly thought Chris Rea was a one hit wonder with Fool If You Think It's Over until I looked at his discography. I don't know why he has not been as popular in the States as he has been in Europe. I mean the blues are the blues, right?

Chris didn’t come to the states because he chose to stay closer to home for his family. He didn’t want to be away for 6months at a time. He and his wife have been together for 50 years. He has two very talented daughters as well.

Chris Rea has such a rich voice, deep and somewhat raw or burned out in vocal quality, and his guitar-playing is excellent on his best songs in particular. I'm not that enthusiastic about the first song in this video, but I recognize that Rea has long been devoted to blues music. I just don't find that to be his strongest compositions. I prefer his more rock-oriented songs like "Road to Hell," "Too Much Pride," "Candles," "Looking for the Summer" and "Heaven". I used to wonder if he had met up with Mark Knopfler, also a finger-picking player, and whether they might have played together even casually. I thought that might be an interesting pairing with Rea on vocals and the two of them alternating on guitar.

Great artist and analysis. You seem to know the subject very well. At the and its not all about quantity but quality

A well known name whose music I know very little about a few hits aside - I may do a little research. Rock!
