I think he took a crack at proving he could do anything he wanted to musically when he combined two different One songs.

I guess I don't know a head voice from a head cold but those veins are PERMANENTLY etched into his neck. Must be from all that high belting he did. Somehow, the man had an ability to go really high with control AND distortion and that's what Dio did (somehow). Many singers I guess can do that but we never heard all of them unless they somehow get famous enough to be put in our face somehow. I can only sit back and appreciate his ability . He had a HUGE sounding voice when he opened up that throttle. Just like Dio sounded huge. Wish I knew how to sing like that but I don't. Chris Cornell. One of the best rock singers ever. nice vid.

Yeah understanding the theory, and then getting your vocal cords to do it, are two totally different things! My problem is all the other muscles that want to get involved to 'help', but actually hinder.

@@wingsofpegasus yeah, I'm still trying to figure it out. But not that much. One thing I kind of learned after years of dabbling is you need to push out your phrases in one long uninterrupted vowel with your consonants just dipping in briefly. I was always barking out the syllables instead of singing. I saw a guy doing a vid with this Canadian girl and he was singing metal style stuff and he sounded like he was a high baritone but he could falsetto a high C at the 20th fret with perfect power and clarity. He was hitting higher falsetto notes than that when he was trying to copy some female singers doing some whistle voice. I'm like bastard, how is your speaking voice so low but you're hitting girl notes???? But his distortion voice sounded great. He figured it out, obviously. Then I went to his YT page and there isn't one legit cover on there I could find. A bunch of covers with 32 diff styles. ? I don't want to hear that crap. Just show me ONE SONG with ONE VOICE that rocks. oh well....

J Scho man I bought that CD and listened to it repeatedly! It was truly a refreshing change of pace that I couldn’t get enough of! It just seemed to showcase his voice! I can relate to his pain but I’m still a miss at his painful end! I miss him and it simply sucks! There’s nothing I can say except it sucks!!!

Chris has been my favourite vocalist for a long time and when I first heard Seasons on the Singles Soundtrack, it really resonated with me and became my favourite vocal performance by him. I know he had other songs which showed off his vocal range far better, but this song, it hits me hard and brings a lump to my throat every time

Fil, he was absolutely my favorite singer and my heart broke in 100 places when he passed. I'm with Vickey (his wife) and really feel he was taken out with psychiatric drugs. I thought when I saw your title Chris Cornell... I stopped everything I was doing and watched and you didn't let me down Fil, you honoured him better than I could've, I love you so much. He was otherworldly, so beautiful. I feel it'd be so good if all of us could somehow take more responsibility for these wonderful artists that lose their way so completely. I could go on but..again thank you so much, btw, I regard you as highly as him as you're so aware of artistry and mastery and you graciously and effusively give love. YOU ARE THE BEST!

Chris was a gift to all who sing and make music. That being said, if you have anything near his talent, make it your own and bring it to us. History needs you. Music needs you. Now is your time.

Something i like to do once in awhile is watch the truly great singers with no sound. Watch their face as they reach high and dig low. It's angelic.

I am from Washington State and I remember well the whole grunge scene emerge and evolve and die. Soundgarden was by far my favorite. 👍😎🤘

ditto....I saw Soundgarden performe at the Capitol Theater in Olympia, Alice in Chains play the Evergreen State College again in Oly, Mother Love Bone/Soundgarden and Jane's Addiction play the same show at the Paramount in Seattle, Pearl Jam at the Mural Amphitheater at the Seattle Center before they hit it big....blah blah blah....too many shows to mention. Cornell was so talented and it really is an absolute shame that he is gone.

Even in this case, your enthusiasm and your big grin makes me smile too, Fil. Even a sad song by a lost legend can still, at times, invoke the joy of musical passion, appreciation, and the gratefulness that we got to hear him, despite that time being far too short.

Loved every incarnation of Chris Cornell. The man was gifted and the world is a darker place without him.

I love his song "Can't Change Me" - the complex arrangement of the guitars and vocals.

One of my favourites from his such a great song

A bunch of us were headed to hang out at the casino when we pulled up everything was blocked off and they said there was a suicide. It wasn't until a while later we found out it was Chris Cornell. I couldn't believe it! Chris Cornell and Layne Staley where are my favorite singers. When it came to vocalization these guys were unmatched for the days they played music.

I wasn't a huge Chris Cornell fan for a long time, only due to not listening to Soundgarden or much of his solo. I had a lot of his music in my library, but I wasn't smart enough to look him up. What did it for me and made me a solid fan was his tribute to Whitney Houston. Oh man. He did that so well by not trying to sing it like Whitney but to do it his way. That night I loaded my phone with all of my Chris Cornell and Soundgarden and you might categorize me as a rabid fan. Thanks Fil for bringing him up. I hope the RRHoF get their collective heads out of their behinds and induct him.

I wasn't familiar with Chris before, though I had heard the band Sound Garden. But that was an amazing song, and so I will discover another great artist, unfortunately too late. You really honor these artists and reading through the comments I learn even more. I will see you at the next one, Fil. Rock.

Well said Paula. Cornell was incredible, and he is another soul gone far too soon.

I saw him live on his acoustic tour. His voice was amazing especially when the drums didn’t block hearing his voice. But he played electric, as well as acoustic, depending on the song. Best concert I ever went to. Listen to his acoustic tour. Billie Jean is just great the way he sings it. Doesn’t remind me, so much better with just him with an acoustic guitar

Chris Cornell and Layne Staley-- both are my favorite artists of the Grunge era. Layne dying was a blow; Chris dying drove me to tears.

This is a perfect example of someone actually using their voice as an Instrument! Awesome!

You mentioned water . A thing that streaked me with Chris is that think I have never seen him drink water during a live show ever! That is remarkable seeing what he did vocally on stage .

That looks like Pete Thorn on guitar, and the pair of them make this amazingly close to the recorded sound. He is a such a gifted player, always just enough and no unnecessary frills. I get tired of the fretwankery on KZread, you sometimes just want to hear a great voice and solid guitar backing.

I may be wrong, but I believe it was Chris Cornell that was the key to creation of Pearl Jam. It was during the recording of the Temple of the Dog album where they had Eddie Vedder sing some vocals, the most famous being the duet Hunger Strike. But the purpose of that album was a tribute to their mutual friend the lead singer of Mother Love Bone who had died from an overdose. Some of the musicians joined Eddie and formed Pearl Jam. The irony, Eddie is the last one we still have. I hope that Chris Cornell has finally found peace. There will never be another.

Brother, Pearl Jam had already formed and Ed was already in the band when Hunger Strike was recorded. Check out PJ20. Stone explains it all. The look on Stone's face when he says "Our guy's pretty fuckin' good too" is priceless. Rock on brother!!!

I'm a recent subscriber. Chris is the reason I sing. I have been a great admirer of his since the Louder Than Love days. I am so happy to have found you did a video featuring him. Your analysis is the best I have seen on Chris' amazing voice. And I love that you spoke to the fact that he and many of the other well-known vocalists from that time who have also left us were pretty much offering their soul in their artistry. He was one of the greatest of all time. I mourn his passing every year, but I cherish every note and word he gave to us.

Never heard of the guy, which speaks to the educational ability of this channel. So when I heard his voice it gave me a PURE ability to analyze it from other singers I've heard. It immediately had a "California Independence" quality...Anybody from the States knows California is a country within a country and has it's own rules. I could immediately envision the guy on Sunset Blvd, singing to small crowds in side- street bars and clubs with that voice......nuf' sed......

Watching this for like the 5th time! Love the details in your reactions and LOVE Chris! If you have not you should check out my favorite live performance of his, ‘When I’m Down’ live at the Troubadour. Just him and a great piano player. All the chills and goosebumps promised! 🙂

Chris Cornell was from my generation (I was born only two months before him). He truly had it all; the voice, songwriting skills, rock god looks, etc... and as you've pointed out, Fil, was greatly respected in the music community. He's definitely among the greats of rock music. Jimmy Page loved him and allowed CC to interview him. I think JP and CC were planning on a collaboration at the time of CC's death. It's devastating to have lost so many artists of the "grunge" era to suicide and drugs and I've seen a few ugly comments here regarding this issue. All I can say is, being from that generation and from personal experience I understand why, unfortunately. Paraphrasing a quote from Elvis- 'Don't judge if you haven't walked in another man's shoes.' RIP Chris. No one sings like you anymore.

Musta been something in the water in Seattle back then. Some of the music coming out of that area over a relatively short period of time was off the charts intense, heavy and extrordinary.

Chris Cornell was such a diverse singer. One day he could sound like Robert Plante and the next day he could sound like Jim Morrison. His range was so unique and outstanding. Like no other singer that I can remember.

“Down on the Upside” is my favorite Soundgarden album. The entire band is (was) amazing but Cornell’s contribution was...(wait for it)...instrumental to their sound. Incredible talent used well. I’ve suggested this band before and I’ll do it again here: “Big Wreck”. The lead singer (Ian Thornley) has been compared to Cornell often, and honestly, when I first heard them (without knowing their name, of course, and being in the days before internet was everywhere) I thought it was Soundgarden and therefore couldn’t find their album! I don’t think Thornley was copying Cornell, (opinion deleted to avoid controversy), but I do think the fact Thornley sounds so much like Cornell hampered Big Wrecks success (though I could be wrong). And finally, I purchased “Persistence” on iTunes late in the evening after watching your livestream well after it was no longer live. Congratulations,sir! I listened to it on my drive to work and then AT work, and got “Hero” stuck in my head. I’ll need to listen a few more times before I can analyze it, but so far I’m liking it!
