The South has a complex history with race and racism that everyone's aware of, including southerners. There are some southerners that are racists but I don't think the ratio of racists to non-racists is that different from other parts of the country with similar demographic percentages. Southerners, black, white and other folks as well, have to live with the reality that some of the symbols of the South have been used by racists and racist organizations to terrorize. Some of the victims of this terror and some of their supporters have equated these symbols as symbols of racism, which is understandable. Northerners and Westerners associate southern symbols with racism in part because it makes them feel untainted and superior as if to say that racism is primarily a southern problem. Also, while some parts of the South are very hot, much of it is in the mountains where temperatures can be a lot more temperate.

I’ve been to the south several times and I live in Wisconsin which is in the north. There are lots of huge trucks in Wisconsin. But when I was in Texas, there are even more gigantic trucks running around. It’s pretty awesome. God bless you both and your family and friends. Doing.
I have a friend who moved from Canada who told me that he was told by an elderly neighbor from Raleigh County, West Virginia, where I'm from that, "Dave, I may talk slow but I don't think slow." And there was a witty history re-enactor from Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, that made the comment about a visitor who kept asking her stupid questions, "I have marbles sharper than that man." Priceless!
I grew up in the South and aside from living in the North for a year, I've spent my whole life there. One thing's for sure, speed limits are more of a guideline than an actual limit. Metro Atlanta traffic is a whole nother level. 55, 65 and 75 miles per hour is simply a suggestion. With 2 major north/south interstates, 1 major east/west interstate, and an interstate perimeter that circles the city creating a traffic bypass connecting the 3 other highways.
Yep !! I'm living here in Savannah...also known as Hollywood of the South since they shoot so many movies & tv shows here all year long...

I was born and raised in Biloxi, MS, on the MS Gulf Coast. You can’t get anymore Southern than that and still live here today (I’m 57). The Bless you heart thing……it can have a double meaning. Hollywood does make fun of the accent and the Bless your heart usage. Basically, if you come to the Deep South, you may randomly her “Bless their heart” and it’s usually a true sentiment to someone that has been through something tragic or otherwise heartbreaking. Hey Y'all!! From North Carolina. I'm Loving this!
After a trip to New York in college, I figured out I definitely belonged south of the Mason-Dixon line. Also "The South" comprises several different cultures. GA/AL/TN are totally different experiences than Kentucky or Louisiana. And my native-born aunt will argue with me on this, but Florida is not part of "The South." It's tropical and is influenced by so many retirees/snowbirds. And the oppressive humidity is not just 2 months a year. I'd say it's more like 4-6 months of the year. And I don't even live on the coast. One last thing, Savannah is so gorgeous because it was not burned to the ground with Atlanta and a lot of other places in GA on "Sherman's March to the Sea." So you can actually see glimpses of what "The South" looked like before the Civil War.

I've watched this video and as a native southern I think he got everything right, except one. "Bless your heart" is not an insult. People say it with sincerity. Most times you hear it if you do something kind or considerate of someone else. I think what he is referring to is when I southern might disagree with something you've said, but even then its like saying "I respect your beliefs even if I don't agree and I hope those beliefs serve you well." It's considered rude here to disagree with a guest so they mean it sincerely and would like to not dwell on that subject. If that makes sense. My grandma's favorite phrase was "Well bless your heart, ain't you just as sweet as sugar-coated honey." A southern backhanded compliment would be “well, isn’t that special “

I agree with Tabfort. Bless your heart is all based on the tone, or delivery, by someone and based on situation or conversation.
I am from Texas and I can tell you, he is talking about the “coastal” south. As a matter of fact there are 3 different souths: The geographical south or better called the “Dixie” south, the deep south and the historic south. The difference between all them is the states that are part of them and the actual geographical location. So if you go to some of the central south states like Kentucky or Tennessee the humidity will not be as bad as in Georgia or Florida. And in Texas where I am from, unless you are in the mexican gulf area, humidity won’t be an issue.
I live in Texas now but my family is country from the "other" south and our grandmas always try and feed everyone. I do this to my kids and all their friends came to my house for my country cooking. I love the south.

There is a very significant difference between the South or the Deep South and Texas. I think this is something that is hard for most Americans to understand let alone folks from other countries. Many academics will define the South as consisting the former states that were part of the Confederacy or that were Slave states. But this is far too general of a definition and simply doesn't take enough factors into consideration. In fact even Professor Wolters has said not to confuse Texas and the South in one of his vlogs about traveling in Texas. And Bless Your Little Heart if you think I'm incorrect!!

Yes, we are proud of the south, love the SEC, and try to be polite to everyone. I have gotten smacked as a kid for not saying "Thank you sir/ma'am", just part of our upbringing.
Mark never mentions the open container laws in this country. No open alcohol bottles or cans allowed in the car,

One thing a lot of people forget when they refer to 'the South', is how big it is: 920,000 sq mi/2.38 mil sq km versus 94,000 sq mi / 243,000 sq km. So 'The South' is roughly 10 times the size of the entire UK and twice the population (127 mil US South v. 67 mil UK). There is a lot of diversity within the south in terms of economics, politics, language, food, religion, geography etc. Don't be too quick to paint it with too broad of a brush.

The South had plantations, usually a cash crop, with limited livestock. The Upper MidWest isn't the South. Texas isn't the South either, it is its own thing. Anything West of the North Dakota/Texas line is Wild West (until you get to the Pacific Coast). Texas started the original ranches, from Mexican culture and free range longhorn cattle. Later ranches started North of there, with well bred cattle, and feedlots ... after the buffalo were eliminated ;-( The goal in both cases was to get beef to Chicago.

Another thing he didn't mention is that Southerners speak a bit more slowly and tend to drag words out. That's not a bad thing, it's just our thing. Those who visit from other parts of the world (or even other parts of the country!) are a bit taken aback by that. Combine that with our unique verbage and sayings, there can be a language barrier, even though we're speaking the same language. Speaking as a Northerner, the South makes one improvement on the English language, even for those in the motherland of the language, England. In English there's no difference between the 2nd person singular and 2nd person plural. It's always "you," one or many. Southerners frequently say "you all" when talking to multiple people. And that phrase will come out with the unique accent that makes it distinctly Southern.
