British cars of the 1970s - eg Ford, Triumph, Austin, Morris, Jaguar 200+ photos

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This online "classic car show" features classic British cars of the 1970s, with 200+ photos of many favourites plus a few obscurities. Sit back and take a look at cars such as the Ford Cortina, Ford Escort Mk1 & Escort Mk2 inc RS2000, Jensen Interceptor & FF, Reliant Scimitar, Vauxhall Victor & Ventora, Triumph Dolomite & Spitfire Mk4/1500, Lotus Eclat and many many more cars from the 1970s. Road cars, race cars, sportscars and a few prototypes can all be found.
A small number of the cars shown may date to just before, or just after, the 1970s, but all the photos represent cars that were on sale during the decade. The photos were taken by myself at classic car shows, museums, road runs, and rallies, with a few scrapyard finds thrown in for good measure (were any of these scrappers rescued?).
If cars of the 70s are your favourites, please let me know in the comments, likewise let's read about your own cars and/or memories of cars from this era. More the merrier. Great set of car pics, memory jerkers. I passed my test in 1962 and started driving my dads Triumph Herald , then I was fortunate to have from new 3 Triumph Vitesses. B, E, H plates, moved onto Triumph 2.5 PI on a J , then a Triumph 2500 S on a N, then as my business was at its development stage, I had a Ford Cortina Gaia on a V, until 1985 when started on BMWs up until 2021. But the early cars and being young and less cluttered roads were Soooooo much fun. Thanks for your vids 👍👍👍

Happy days, I was an Austin Apprentice at Longbridge, Birmingham, employed in September 1969. 25000 employees at Longbridge in those days. Housing estate today. I remember all the minis and 1100/1300 builds in CAB (car assembly building)1 and 2 along with the 1800 landcrab (in Trentham building) and the Maxis they were still building the A55 Austin Cambridge pickup in Trentham) in 1969. The Allegro (El-agro we called it), build started shortly before I left in 1976 to work for Nissan in South Africa. Build quality was a bit different to the current car factories!!! Thanks for bringing back the memories!!

I think given that quality control was indeed lacking somewhat in the 70's on British cars in general, it's even more of an achievement to get them looking so pristine now. In fact, many of the cars we saw in this selection are probably better than when they were new. My favourites are the Vauxhall FD Victor/Ventora, Triumph 2000/2500 and Sunbeam Rapier Fastback. It's fair to say all these cars had their issues but my god, they look fantastic!

The first ever car I owned was a grey Morris 1000, believe it or not I was 14 (1968) at the time! I spent all my spare time looking after it but although parked on private accessible land I never actually drove it. The local mature foot patrol (beat) constable would stop by now and again for a quick chat to make sure everything was above board, he seemed pleased and no doubt was thinking to himself 'well, it keeps him out of trouble'....

brilliant video, 70's was a brilliant decade for cars, so many classic 60's models still being built well into the decade and plenty of brilliant new stuff, people go on and on about the dreadful industrial relations which management were as much to blame for but that was how things were, all part of a bigger world economic malaise, quite a few of models shown here that my dad had, mk1 cav, hillman hunter, mk1 escort (dads was a 4 door) and mk 1 capri, dad was always changing his cars and he also had the odd johnny foreigner, cheers, marvellous nostalgia

That Jensen FF was owned by a member o the maker's family, and has a sticker in the rear window - "Maintained by Jensen Motors". Although it shared the styling of the Interceptor, few of the parts were in common. Even the chassis was longer.

Roots had names for their saloons: Sunbeam Vogue, Singer Gazelle, Humber Scepter, Hillman Minx. I had a Humber Scepter on an M plate. My dad had a series of Austin Morris saloons Oxford MO, Morris Oxford, Wolesley Farina 15/60 and 16/60 then in the 70s he wouldn't buy a Marina so I persuaded him to get a Triumph 2000 Mk2 L reg in Blue and another in brown followed by a Saab 900.

11:26 Vauxhall's body shapes manifested in Australia as Holden Torana(4-door) and Monaro(2-door) during the late 1960s(from 1968) and through much of the 1970s.

Thank you for showing you photos of some great British cars like you have already said unfortunately quality control was awful, I have always wanted to have a Triumph Dolomite to do up I nearly bought one but the rot was too bad, when I was four my brothers friend pulled up outside my mum and dads house in a Jaguar E Type and took us for a spin that was 1969 wow! where have the years gone, I've been a Jaguar enthusiast ever since, it seemed so much simpler times then, there are some fantastic photos of some great British classics. Also I loved the Jenson Interceptor it was one of many British cars I adored while growing up ( sigh).

Maxi marina Austin 1100 viva all popular and a lot of my family had em when I was a kid . Reliability wasn't as good as now I remember everybody then were under the bonnet on a weekend or had the car on ramps working on them. Something u don't see nowadays. I think people have lost the skills to work on cars today but also they are so complicated now.

I ran out of fuel on the way to a party on New Years Eve many years ago! The car was a Jensen Interceptor. I walked a bit then a taxi 'flashed by' and I hailed it to stop! Got a lucky ride to my house in town and went to get out my MGB GT. OH shoot! I had left the keys in the Jensen! happy New Year 1973!

20:40 The Vauxhall Sport Hatch is rather rare with fewer than 200 made I believe. My local dealer had one on display in the mid 70s and it was universally known as The Purple People Eater.

Having learnt to drive in the early 70s all of these cars were familiar to me. On the whole ( to me ) they were very boring. That's why I preferred the 50s and 60s cars. Especially foreign makes that you didn't see every day. Nowadays it's mostly foreign makes on the British roads. Thanks for putting these memories on though.

There were some good designs, but often they'd not be fully developed before going on sale, or were dragged out far too long before being replaced. Coupled with indifferent management and bolshie unions, it was never going to end very well sadly and foreign makers cleaned up once they got a foothold here.
