It's well documented that people who make negative comments and cast doubt seem much more intelligent than those who are actually making positive contributions. Rory said nothing, he is the weakest of them all. He just kept repeating "why?" and "how?" with nothing to offer when asked how HE will get his Theresa May's deal through even though it is THE most unpopular position in the country. Dominic Raab is the only one with any brains. All the rest of them are saying "Oh No Deal would be so bad, I would totally deliver it" and then when pressed go "well actually I wouldn't really." Raab is the only one saying he would take strong action to deliver Brexit as the majority of the country voted for, and even though he's being pretty clear that he wants to use it as a bargaining chip, it is the only strategy. If Rory became prime minister, expect him to just stay in the EU altogether.

And no one really answered how they plan to go around Parliament to make No Deal happen. They also didn't want to discuss what will happen with a No Deal. How the UK economy will take a major hit. It is sad that a new PM will be named, and not one Con member running for leader is suggesting to quash Brexit or at least provide a new Referendum question. Apparently none of the 48% of voters who chose to stay in the EU were Conservatives.

@@xandermohan6331 "an insult to the constitution and democracy" is precisely the language I would use to suggest that Brexit should not occur when it was demonstrated to be the will of the people. I ask once again, why do we protect the rich and powerful who run the parliament, who come from cliques from universities. Why is parliament endowed with sovereignty? This is basic political science. Parliament only has sovereignty because the people use them as an expression of their popular sovereignty. Parliament has a duty to the people to do as they wish or the people have an obligation to revolt, this is the very basis of liberalism emerging from the English tradition. 75 percent of MPs are anti-Brexit while the majority of the country voted in favor of it. If they cannot put aside their personal views they fail their task and are no longer sovereign as a matter of principle. Yes, it's very nice for Rory to appeal to the Remainers against 5 albeit to varying degrees Brexiteers. It is quite easy to 'win' that way. Ask yourself, what did he actually contribute to this entire debate in a positive rather than a negative fashion? Nothing.

(I apologize if i make any lanquage mistake ) Even if i support the remain campaign , you should be more optimist about your country. First of all, greetings from Greece. 🇬🇧🇬🇷 . Maybe you believe that UK is a sinking ship, but remember all those difficulties you have faced and all those GREAT things you have succeeded. One great Prime Minister of Greece(Eleutherios Venizelos ) used to say that:"Britain always wins one battle, the last one......) . I am pretty sure that your future will be GREAT, even outside the EU.

You’ve got to realise the EU bosses will be watching this, they want to know who they are dealing with and how to react accordingly when the next PM goes to Brussels. it’s a game of poker, that is why you’re seeing 4 out of 5 saying no deal has to be there, to try and obtain a better deal than the UK have so far. Dom Raab is not saying let’s close parliament, but he is effectively saying to the EU, we are leaving whether you like it or not and it is in your interest (EUs) to start negotiating a realistic FTA with the UK. If the EU does not take the PM seriously, no more negotiating will take place. To publicly say on national TV, I want a new deal and I will definitely not walk away if the EU says no, the EU will be rubbing their hands as the UK PM will have their hands tied again like T.May, its suicide for negotiating. You HAVE to play your cards close to your chest and say we ARE walking away if we do not come to an agreement, once you start saying ‘we want a deal but we wont walk away’ you’ve lost ALL bargaining points at the table. To assume the EU want to help us as Rory thinks, it’s nonsense. This is business and the EU will never budge if the PM has no backbone as we’ve already agreed to the horrendous Withdrawal agreement.

That’s not true. Members of Parliament whittle it down to the last 2 before party members get their vote. We live in a representative democracy.

Member of Parliament of the conservative party... Big difference to what you typed. These people are currently deciding for 2 players between themselves, even if the populace of the Tory party prefer a candidate, that candidate CAN be eliminated before reaching the final round. Say Boris is deleted due to tactical voting. What then? He is the most popular, so the last two candidates are determined currently by only 313 people. Once these 2 have been elected, the paying members of the Tories can then decide which of these two. That means (and I need to rectify myself), only 124.000 people in total (which includes the MP's) determine the next PM. Do you find the EU is unelected? Just a question based on your previous answer. PS. As Nigel Farage once said: "I didn't vote for you, nobody here has voted for you."

Wichnam yes, the Conservative party pick the PM, but the PM isn’t mandatory. The party always pick their leader, our elections are to decide who our local constituency representative is. We are not America - we don’t not have presidential elections. Nothing has changed, the mps from the Conservative party always pick their leader choices and their members always finalise that choice. The only difference here is that it’s happened ‘after’ a general election and not ‘before’. If you think these elections are in democratic, then you either don’t understand how our representative democracy works and just think it’s a ‘I voted conservatives’ thing, or you think our system is inherently undemocratic. We the people voted for our mps. Our mps in turn vote for their leader.

Investing in the country and its people are buzzwords. They are literal Trotskyites if you listen to Corbyns right hand man, or if you even listen to Jess Phillips saying she would nationalize everything if she could. Are you just not taught about 70s and how the country got there? Literal corpses in the streets? Why does privatization inherently mean shutting off everything? It just means putting it into non-government hands. Now if its an essential service, sure the government should play a role to ensure access for all. But lets not pretend that there are only 2 options of privatizing everything and "nationalizing everything" as the Labour party expressly wishes to do so.

Again I'm speaking as someone who's argued/negotiated against multinational corporations by myself as a young working class man and I've won and gotten better deals/outcomes than most managers for those companies could get. The reason for this was purely down to me having every single legal document and detail on hand along with having a very large vocabulary, being completely uncompromising with my stance and willing to throw anyone under the bus to get exactly what I desire. The way the government went about these negotiations it was doomed to fail to begin with as there was no plan and they've conceded to everything from the EU even to things that have no legal backing like the £39 billion "divorce bill". I don't know what industry you work in but in my academic background we had to pay very close attention to details on rules and regulation and expose any grey areas we found and make the officials look like monkeys when they claim we're cheating and we never budge/compromised on anything. The UK would have no trade deals to rely on, while the EU would keep theirs intact. There is no doubt that the EU will suffer some economic losses, but not to the extent that the UK will likely stumble. It is charging in without taking a look at your surroundings that is going to doom the next PM and the UK. It reminds me of the saying to cut off your nose to spite your face. My academic background and my career is based on rules, regulations, negotiations and risk management. All that learning tells me that pursuing a hard Brexit, or even just falling into a hard Brexit is a bad idea for the UK.

  • @kizzagt

    @kizzagt

    4 жыл бұрын

@@stephenwalsh1163 The reality is the EU doesn't want a "hard brexit" because the UK holds 17% of the EU's economy whereas the EU only holds 8% of the UK economy. The UK is also the 2nd largest net contributor to the EU, it holds nearly 4 million EU citizens and is the main backbone of human rights and standards in engineering, food, health and safety etc so if "hard brexit" was to happen, the UK wouldn't have to make any changes to trade with the EU however the EU would have to make major changes to trade with the UK because of the major standard difference between the two due to the single market mutual recognition clause which the likes of Femi has discussed. Also on the £39 billion divorce bill the EU needs our money in order to continue propping up the failing eastern bloc and med and to put towards various project, without that money they're screwed and I doubt Germany and France will pay more considering the climate and the eastern bloc won't reduce their net rebate because they're poor countries and the republic of ireland's economy would be the 1st to go with a no deal brexit and italy is playing with fire with bankruptcy. On the bill going off HM treasury's graph on membership fees I estimate we're owed around £200 billion and I'd argue strongly that should be coughed up with 47 years of interest and inflation. Yes with no deal the UK wouldn't have any trade deals to speak off however former commonwealth nations along with the USA do want a deal done very quickly and that would soften the blow but I'd also argue if the government would stop pushing terrible fiscal policies and abolish printing of money we'd not only have recovered faster economically speaking but also have stronger economic buying power against our rivals and climb from as low as 9th (based on PPP) and raise to 4th overtaking germany but this can only happen with an aggressive brexiteer in charge of the whole thing. I understand why you consider it a bad idea, but one could argue as you should be aware of in the economic world you require a drastic shift in order to improve the economic strength and power of the nation itself. Businesses may not like change but without changes and challenges we'd be standing still and be killed off by those who evolved and overtook us. In my academic background we were always moving never standing still because it was kill or be killed in the battle of competition and being the winners at the end. Maybe this is a case of us having different mentalities but for me there's nothing quite so satisfying doing something out of pure spite.

max factor how are you gonna cancel your Netflix, What’s your plan for leaving Netflix. You just leave. It’s that simple. That’s what we voted for, and that’s what gonna happen.

From Indiana, USA - an interesting debate to watch and try to learn a bit more about your Brexit impasse, none the less...And before watching this debate I didn't know any of the candidates and honestly, not sure a conservative party would earn my support, if I was a Brit. But after watching, I must admit I was very impressed with "Rory" and a close tie between "Dominic" and "Michael" for least impressive. But best of luck to all of your candidates and I truly hope for only good outcomes for the great UK.

Hate debates in front of live audiences. Candidates play to the crowd instead of answering the questions. Becomes a competition as to who can get the loudest applause.

Yes BUT BUT BUT people aren't as stupid as politicians believe ! ! ! Yes. Most of the Bullshit Politicians here "play to the crowd" BUT actually Rory Stewart's 'down to earth' performance wins by a mile for most viewers; except maybe with those few Brexiters who appreciate Trumpeting Bullshit AND WHO ALSO who trust politicians. Personally I like Stewart just cos he sometimes talks about Citizens Assembly / Jury Democracy. I wouldnt trust politicians whatever their performance style.

Only Boris understood you dont debate a leadership contest selected by MP's and members via channel 4.

Yeah he already reached the finale treshhold of 105 MP votes. So the only thing stopping him is himself by fucking up a debate.

It's a method to show those voting MPs how popular each candidate is with the public - no point voting for a candidate who is hated. This debate probably helped Rory's bid the most.

That would be fine if the Tory party was in opposition; a future Prime Minister should face some public scrutiny.

I'm disappointed Rory didn't win, I think he was clearly the best candidate. He'd be a great, compassionate Prime Minister. Of course, with hindsight, we know the absolute shitshow that emerged with Boris. Such a shame and such a missed opportunity.
