To answer your question at 7:30, SEAL stands for SEa Air and Land. So despite being a team within the US Navy they can and do operate in all areas. Lesser known team equivalent to the US Navy SEAL in the British Forces is the SBS or Special Boat Service which falls under the Royal Marines.

Danny Dietz got the worst of it. He was shot 11 times. 1 SHOT IN THE LEFT ANKLE 1 SHOT IN THE RIGHT CALF 1 SHOT IN THE RIGHT THIGH 1 SHOT IN THE GROIN 2 SHOTS IN THE STOMACH 2 SHOTS IN THE THROAT 3 SHOTS IN THE HEAD Early in the battle his right thumb was completely blown off and he had to shoot left handed. The movie shows him losing 3 fingers but thats incorrect. And lastly in 1 of the jumps off the mountain both of his legs were broke when the other 3 SEALs landed on top of him. From that point on Marcus Luttrell had to carry him down the mountain. Except for Marcus Luttrell every Navy SEAL you see in those pictures at the end of the movie died on that mission. I have such respect for Veterans, they put their lives on the line every single day for each of us!! Everytime I see military men/women in public I make sure to thank them and I've raised my children to do the same, they deserve every praise they are entitled to!! My husband was a tunnel rat in Vietnam and my son was an army ranger, I'm proud of the work they've done, I don't know much about what my son did because he was highly classified..I don't like asking questions because they both suffer from PTSD, but they know I'm proud...I worked at a V.A. psych hospital and what I've seen these men and women suffer from is heartbreaking!! One of the guys who died in this battle--- Michael Patrick Murphy---- grew up on Long Island in NY like me, but I did not know him. One day I was walking down the street near my mother's home, when I saw the entire street blocked off for a funeral. There were military personnel everywhere. I just stood there watching in silence with all the other people from the neighborhood. It was very moving. Later they named the local post office in his hometown in Michael's honor. He is a hero.

I recommend watching Marcus himself tell the story of Operation Red Wings. The movie is good but unfortunately it does sugar coat a few things and leaves out key moments like Marcus’s trainer he had as a kid and how it motivated him to crawl in those mountains until he found the waterfall, Mike Murphy’s cries for help and Marcus’s change of views on the people of Afghanistan after more or less hating them after 9/11.

Pashtuns embrace an ancient traditional, spiritual, and communal identity tied to a set of moral codes and rules of behaviour, as well as to a record of history spanning some seventeen hundred years. Pashtunwali promotes self-respect, independence, justice, hospitality, love, forgiveness, revenge and tolerance toward all (especially to strangers or guests).] It is considered to be the personal responsibility of every Pashtun to discover and rediscover Pashtunwali's essence and meaning. It is the way of the Pashtuns. We have melmastya, being a good host, nanawatai, giving asylum, and badal, vengeance. Pashtuns live by these things. The Pashtun tribes are always engaged in private or public war. Every man is a warrior, a politician and a theologian. Every large house is a real feudal fortress. ... Every family cultivates its vendetta; every clan, its feud. ... Nothing is ever forgotten and very few debts are left unpaid.

The US military has several branches of special forces. Each branch severs a distinct purpose. The Army Special Forces (The Green Berets ) purpose is to go behind enemy lines then organize and train resistance groups. Like the French Resistance in WW2. Seals and Marine Raiders are more strike forces. Sent in for a specific mission. According to a couple of SeALs the discussion between members while on mission is normal. Once un mission there no rank among them. Each member has a say from experience. The team leader will make the final call.

I wouldn’t have killed those goat herders but I would have tied them to trees and let them take time to get loose so our guys had a chance to get away. Marcus did not lose a leg. And his escape from the “battle field” until Gulab found him was much longer and more painful than depicted here. At times he would reach out in front of him and draw a line in the dirt and then drag himself to that line….and then do it again, and again. He did not want any of that depicted in the movie because he wanted the movie to be about his brothers and not him.

Fun fact if you haven't already figured it out. The guy towards the beginning that spilled the coffee and told the new guy to clean it up, that was the real Marcus Luttrell.

Try "Danger Close" about the Australians in Vietnam. I don't think it has been reacted to, or not often. The mission really should have been scrubbed at the landing. The ropes were dropped which they were not supposed to do. That was a big clue that some Americans were in the area. So even though the helicopters often did fake landings at othed points, the ropes were a dead giveaway. It was also a mistake to try to land the QRF at the same spot, especially without the Apaches. However, the reasoning was that they didn't know where the team was but that they might be near that LZ. If the ropes hadn't been dropped they might have made it. So it was a risk that didn't pay off. The actual ending was different. There was no battle. Marcus had been moved oit of the village and hidden in a cave, because the Taliban had come into the village for him but they were only just sent away without a fight. He stayed there for a while and I think was rescued from there or near it. Marcus was also very lucky. After he woke up in that cleft he was hiding in, he staggered around the mountain for a while and fell down a series of ravines. Somehow the Taliban did not notice him or at least did not catch him. Others did notice him, some of them the villagers. Had he gone done the other side of ridge, he would have probably been handed over to the Taliban right away.

Unfortunately most of that movie is Hollywood story based. It’s been torn apart by several special forces on KZread on how inaccurate that movie was done.

Hey Kabir. Hey there dude. How are you doing? Hope you are well. Thanks for reacting to this movie. I was one of the people that recommended this movie. Out of all the really good war movies I have watched, this is my #1 top favorite war movie. Before this movie came out, my top war movie of all time was "Saving Private Ryan" . Now my top 3 favorite war movies are 1. Lone Survivor. 2. Saving Private Ryan. 3. 1917. Peter Perg who directed this movie also directed "Deep Water Horizon" and "Friday Night Lights". The movie "Friday Night Lights" spawned the TV series of the same name. Both the movie and the show are the high pressure world of small town Texas high school football! The movie is very good and a must watch, I think. Cheers.
