They tried in 1997/98, but it didn't catch on. Phil Taylor won it.

They need to bring this comp back or one that's the same format, great stuff! :)

Great upload, I had heard of Ian Robertson's reputation as a dart player in the Bedford area when I first started playing but never had the pleasure of watching this before. I had the privilege of playing him a few years back and beating him 3-0. I don't for one minute think he is the player he was but when he was practising he hit 140 after 140 and I though shit this might be hard work

The News Of The World darts championship ended in 1990 but it did return unsuccessfully in 1997 where it was won by Phil Taylor.

The boards used back then look like Hedgehogs have been rolling around on them for months before the tournament. So worn aren’t they!

Griffomedia They are Elm boards & had to be soaked prior to being used. It was really hard to pull the darts out. The boards would last many years

I didnt have a clue who he was he was just up on the board as Robbo. I won the bull up and banged in a 15 dart leg. I don't think I have ever played 3 such solid legs in a row. One of my teammates came over and told me who it was and I couldn't believe it

I know everyone in the comments wants this format to come back but, whilst it's good to watch, it's far too short for me. A final being first to 2? No way, that's a not a good way to judge who's deserves to win in my opinion

Even as late as 1997/9 the News of the world" Event was the most open torunament anyone could pay about 10 go to one of the locations and play the qualifers. From the very first round its 2/3 nock out. That is what made it such a hard tounament to win and even less likely to repeat let alone defend!!!!

All the pros entered it and most won it. The news of the world was the one to win. It was considered a world championship back then . 👍
