Hey thiggins, just wanted to say thank you for the great video! I researched a few different smokers, came across your video and that was all I needed, very informative. I also went ahead and bought the nomex tape to hit the doors, works great!

Mr thiggins did the unit hold together. What thickness is the steel. Above all, were you able to smoke at a constant temp. Could you get above 225? Thanks for video.

Nice looking system, except for the huge amount of leakage at the top (it should only be coming out the little chimney). Some hi-temp silicon and gasket tape should fix that though. I really like the large vertical area, could use it in competition with some decent mods. Are you able to control the temp for cooking precisely? And how much $$$ are these going for?

I bostonhave a hard time maintaining a constant temperature. now I did use rtv on all of the seems and I still get a fluctuation of 210 to 260 while smokeing a butt. Any ideas?

Finally got my smoker yesterday! Very happy. Going home tonight and put it together so i can see what mods I need to make or if I need to send it back. In any case I wanted to ask you a question: When you are cooking how does the food on the top racks come out? Meaning do the ribs pretty much come out the same as they do on the bottom rack? Does the digital stoker help with maintaining heat?

Thomas Thames The temp on the top rack does differ from the bottom. I put large pieces of meat like buttts and brisket on the bottom three racks and smaller items like sausage and chicken breast on the top two. If I fill the cooker with ribs I'll move them around a bit in the middle of the cook.

Thanks for taking the time to make a nice video!I I bought this same smoker and just finished assembling it today, haven't seasoned it yet so I was curious how it held in the smoke. I noticed most of the smoke leaking out on yours was near the top where it's past all the meat and ready to exit the stack anyways, but was curious if you're contemplating putting in some oven door seal or happy with it as is. Thanks again!

I did put some Nomex gasket around the door. The door is sealed pretty tight now. The more I've used the cooker the better the door is fitting.

Has the unit held together? I have a Brinkman cimarron which is 1/4 steel-- I think. The unit is 20 years old and doing well. I was thinking of adding the vertical tube to my off set since they are the same brand. This is why I was asking. Thanks if you have time to reply. cr

@@chrisreeves8037 My smoker has held up incredibly well, structurally, but I also have a rain proof cover on it when not in use to protect it from the weather. I've had to re-paint the firebox with hi-temp black paint a couple times, but that is the only part seeming to want to "wear out". The high temps from the hot wood coals is hard on the paint and I know when its time to re-paint it when I see rust starting to show up on it. This smoker has lasted ~3-4 years longer than I expected it to. Incredibly happy with it, and a bit disappointed Brinkman doesn't offer it any longer, because when the time DOES come to replace it, I won't be able to get one knowing it will last, I'll have to hope whatever I do get lasts as long as this one has.

@@deanlhouston Didos to your comments. I have repainted twice, and it has many years left; hence, I was thinking of adding a vertical stack. A retired oilfield welder lives three houses from me which makes the work convenient, if I can find a used vertical. Thanks Dean, good smoke-in, cr

You didn't put any high temp food grade sealant or high temp gaskets around the main chamber, water pan door or firebox?? Dude I literally sealed up every screw gasketed every opening and she keeps and retains heat and smoke like a beast!!! Briskets, pork butts, shoulder's, Thanksgiving turkey... It don't matter came out like a Boss!! Badass smoker if you put the time in to seal up heat loss hands down!

My door handle somehow got stripped and came off. Now my door won't shut. I called the 800 customer service number. It is no longer in service. So now I have a hunk of metal in my yard I can't use. Going to see if I can find the handle online somewhere. None of the hardware stores have it.

thiggins68, good morning from Waldorf, Md. Hey can you tell me what those wheels are made of? They look plastic and would probably tear up if you move it too much.

They are made of metal. The cooker is easy to move. No problems with the wheels.

Just another reason I won't buy a Brinkmann product anymore. I have a trail master limited edition and it leaked like crazy. I've managed to make it work with tons of RTV and oven gasket but it's a rust bucket. I spend money on a product and I shouldn't have to spend a lot of time trying to make it work. It should work directly from manufacturer. A better option would be a Weber Smokey Mountain. I'm going to purchase one of those to hold me over until I can get a custom offset smoker.

Great videos. This is the first time for me using an upright smoker. I'm used to offset. I like the mods you did as well. What is the water pan used for? I've seen some videos of guys putting wood in there with the water but it looked weired. Can you give this newbie some advice.

The water pan is located on the bottom right next to the cross-over from the fire box. I fill the water pan with just water. Others may use fruit juice or some other liquid but I found the liquid makes little difference. Sometimes I put onion, carrots and celery in the water pan but I don't think that makes a difference either. The idea is that the water will create steam in the cooking chamber. Providing for humid cooking environment. Filling up the water pan does make a difference. A wet smoked brisket is moister than a dry smoked one.

I have a brinkman, at least 30 years old looks just like the vertical barrel, but no side smoking attachment, and no top chimney. anyone seen one of these.. it's solid steel and it takes 2 men to lift.. I would love to jazz it up but I think I would need a torch.

Just an update for anyone considering this smoker. I bought one this summer, and to protect it, ordered the smoker cover at the same time. Sadly, the shipping date for the cover has been pushed back at least five times, from the original date of August 14, 2014. It's near the end of November and I still have no answer from Brinkman.
