Bringing Gene Therapy to the Table | Dr. Jennifer Adair | TEDxNashvilleSalon
Gene therapy is changing how we treat diseases such as HIV and cancer, but only in a few places around the globe. Listen to a gene therapist discuss patient stories that inspired creative solutions to globalizing this next generation of gene therapy treatments. In her Seattle lab at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Dr. Jennifer Adair leads a team of scientists to find ways to correct genetic code to prevent diseases such as HIV and cancer. But the cutting-edge therapy has a problem: it can only be done in high-tech, sterile labs that exist in just a handful of clinics in elite, developed countries. To make it accessible and affordable worldwide, Adair developed a mobile “gene therapy in a box” technique by combining commercially available technologies with practical molecular and cell biology approaches and then proved the method can be delivered in resource-constrained clinics. Adair’s scrappy point of view comes from her everyday experience in leveraging available resources to meet a diverse set of needs. At age 19, she was newly married and a new mom. With the help of her family, a corporate scholarship and the U.S. welfare system, she earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and then a PhD in genetics and cell biology. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

The world would be more peaceful if there were compassionate people like her i really admire her for the humanitarian work that will help millions
I have watched this presentation before and needed to watch it again so I know there is hope for people. I learned today the daughter of a friend has at most a month to live because of cancer. My friend already lost her husband and son to cancer. It's too late for her daughter to receive this treatment but hopefully it will become widespread so people no longer need to suffer like my friend is, losing her husband and all of her children to cancer.
Please let the Gene Therapy come OUT ! There are millions of millions of people that need it

It’s completely insane when there are multiple methods to help and it’s all conjecture
I have a retinal disease that is slowly robbing me of my sight. Gene therapy looks promising but the enormous costs will prevent most people from accessing it.
fantastic point ! culture and context are key!
My sister, Elaine Burgess, just sent me this. I am sure there have been updates since your presentation and I would be very interested in learning more about your research. If you could forward citations to Elaine, I would be most appreciative. As a former pediatric oncology social worker for 30 years, I was very familiar with the treatment modalities for the many brain tumors in children and the impact on the patients and families. Your research has been of benefit to many and I thank you for your investment in Charlie.
Underrated. Go fund her.
I found the presentation, enjoyable, gave hope. Some of the exciting and innovative thinking from gene therapy is coming out into reality, And I think it might have more people willing to volunteer for clinical trials. The improved survival time does help. It gave hope.
I enjoyed the presentation
Genius!!
Fantastic stuff! - I love Scientific / Medical success stories - I hope it has a huge impact . .
Wow! This is great. Thank you.
Question: what happens if you modify cells that you didn't want to modify? Every cell in my body has the same DNA but does very different jobs, why does it matter if the wrong cell gets DNA it doesn't use?
do u also do duchene replacement therapy?
can gene therapy work for spinal cord injury?
Yay so expensive that it's not possible for regular people
Hello mam a small suggestion if cells are less in marrow then we can do polymerase chain reaction(pcr) which amplify the cells in marrow. I hope you will think about it(10:45)
So no more cancer ? That’s great But we won’t know what will happen in long term If u get pregnant 🤰 after the treatment How will that affect

Oh no... My mom has Parkinson's disease and dementia, and it's because of destruction of neuron cells to generate dopamine. And also I'm very depressive person. I guess it's a kind of genetic disease. I hope your grand daughter someday can be cured.
10:30 inject cells directly into femur bone with pre drilled hole. Cap insertion point. Done.
Mam is it possible to change skin color genetically?
