Bringing Back The Airbus A380 Was More Important Than Lufthansa Knew
Ойын-сауық
Around ten months ago, Lufthansa announced it would bring the Airbus back into service for summer 2023. In response to a question from Simple Flying in early May, the airline group's CEO, Carsten Spohr, revealed that the decision had turned out to be more important than they realized, when it was made a year ago. Let’s unpack this in today’s video!

I think with the sheer size of the A380 as well… Lufthansa and other operators can use the Superjumbo as a testbed for new cabins especially on business and first class offerings.

A lot more people have to fly between the same few cities to keep the A380 aloft... as if we already complain enough about overpriced overcrowded travel destinations. I doubt there will be another such human-centered airliner after the 380, the way it's designed means there's no real second life hauling freight (and thus continued parts and service sales) -- it's far easier to turn a warehouse into apartments or a container carrier into a cruise liner than the other way around (which is why the 747 was genius). So enjoy the superjumbo while they last.

I've been a passenger on the A380 twice, once on BA and once on Air France. I loved the experience both times. It felt like a revival of the golden age of air travel. And those enormous bins under the windows were the best.

My flights with a A380 has been my best flights and I still remember them fondly.
Totally agree👍👍. I love the A380. With at least 39 A380s are dead or retired/scrapped, The Airbus A380 is now the best capacity solution at this time for some customers who still has the A380 in their hands while awaiting the arrival of new and more efficient widebody aircraft. Of course those plans have much delayed for many customers, it would seem that for Lufthansa has no choice but to bring back a total of 8 Airbus A380s alongside with the Boeing 747-400 because of the 777X delayed and also rising high demand in a alarming rate has cause some of it's remainning 747-400 to return to service and the same result for the Airbus A340s because of the delayed of the arrival of new Boeing 787s.
The A380 is probably the best airplane ever made and I'm glad they are coming back. I hope to be able to fly on one in the near future.

I don't think it's the best airplane ever made. Its wings are too heavy for its lift capacity. The ones on the 747-8 for comparison are much lighter. And the bet to go for a giant quad jet clearly backfired. I think the best plane made so far is probably the A350-900.

Lufthansa stored a bunch of A340-600 and 747s when Corona hit. They also have 10 A350-1000 on order, to replace the A380 fleet over time.
A boom for the Airline !!! Maybe there's time to save the 6 they traded in to Airbus to sweeten the deal on the A350 order ..
What airlines don’t realize is that the A380 motivates passengers to travel knowing it’s around, as opposed to just flying from point A to point B. The experience of the mode of transportation makes a difference, people will be more willing to pay for tickets if they know they can get into one.

Ever since the A380 was part of the travel scenery, I lost count of people arranging their itineraries just to fly with airlines that got it in their fleets. Many kinda have rediscovered their aviation enthusiasm it has triggered. But good point though about those who could care less about the type that makes it to their final destination; The Titanic was the opportunity to travel in style and its sheer size could accommodate any wallet size or even stowaways as it was learned from its investigation.

Let’s keep these great aircraft in the skies.
Brilliant news for aviation and Lufthansa, seems to be working well for the other carriers, some gave up too early on the type. For passenger experience nothing beats the 380.

We still have quite a while before the 747-8 and Emirates A380’s retire.
I have had over 70 flights on an A380. The most comfortable and quiet plane in the sky. Pity Singapore swapped out the original seats for less comfortable ones. But when the cabin crew remark on how quiet it is and how easy to talk to passengers and the frequency of supplying refreshments is reduced because the air is so much more moist at the higher pressure, you know you will reach your destination in a much better frame of mind. I just wonder whether there will ever be a case for refreshing the plane for future use? American carriers could make use of such a plane if it could be certain of being loaded quickly, they don't seem to get it that with good ground operations it can be loaded and unloaded quickly if you are slick. If it could be made fuel efficient and it has always made me wonder why it isn't? The short quiet take off is a huge asset for airports close in to city centres. Less than 2/3rds the runway compared to the 747?
I bet in two weeks Lufthansa will again remove them, and then reinstate them, again. Been like this since 2020 until they eventually ditch it altogether, so I don't get the hype around this topic.

While demand remains strong and air-fares high, the type's future is secure.
Great to see so many airline managers eating their words.
It’s such an unexpected turn for this type. I, and I guess a lot of other people, thought that the pandemic slowdown would be the last nail in the coffin of Airbus’ vanity project. But it just refuses to die. I think perhaps we’re seeing the versatility of the business model it was designed for. Maybe there is a place for the 380 in fleets other than Emirates?

That's why Lufthansa is leaning towards the Dreamliner -9 (34 on order) and the Airbus A350 -9 (34 on order) -1000 (10 on order) which is far more fuel efficient and lower maintenance/fuel cost and more profitable in terms of passenger capacity/ traffic.

Can’t wait for it to return with Lufthansa.
I think in my humble opinion that the A380 is the finest Aircraft ever assembled.
I'm impressed both with the professionalism of this site and of the Lufthansa CEO.
I think even if the A380 doesn't come back in full force now it may definetly come back in the future. Most countries in the world are developing and eventually will be able to afford to fly. Airports only have so much space so the plane makes it much more efficient to accommodate all the future traffic from eventual significant increase in passengers.
Takeoff and landing is so super smooth. The problem is the higher consumption. Let's see how long they'll be in service!
Airlines are realizing that they made bad decisions during the horrific covid times, they thought it was the end of travel and they were super wrong. Now we encounter pilot and staff shortages, high demand and a lot of delays or cancelations. They must bring back all the big planes.
I am very glad the supers are coming back to Lufthansa! I hope they fly on for several decades.
The 747-8i is a dream for Lufthansa as well. Get a seat on one while you can.
I think Lufthansa will eventually bring back all their A380's over the next 3 years. Too much traffic demand to ignore that lost revenue. Look at the like of BA, QR, EY and SQ - all their A380s are flying or in the processes of returning.
If there is an aviation god, I pray to him that we see the A380s in the skies for as much as possible

When the plane is more than 80% fully booked the A 380 is very cost effective. If an airline can't archive it they made the wrong decision buying this plane. Emirates wouldn't be without the A380 the airline what it is today....
There is not a better way to fly longhaul than on the A380. I've flown the A380 several times and it is unbeatable.
With the price of fuel .. I am not sure that the economic results will be great .. unless the price of airfares will be adjusted.
Be sure to follow up and let us know what percentage of capacity they get. The decision might not be so wise if they can't put enough bums in seats.

I think Lufthansa’s original plan was to keep the 747-400 flying and bring back the A340-600 until the 777-9 became available. But due to delays in the 777-9, they decided to bring back the A380 instead.

Very good decision
The A380 wings had to be 'rewisted' which was a huge undertaking. The RR engines on the current A380 are substandard due to the fact that the hot end blades in the engine have premature life.
Let me put it this way , I am on a trip to europe from canada i had the choice between flying on a a350 or a 747 400 ,I choose the 747 over the a350 just because of the plane ,I would fly the A 380 if it was available ,even the newer planes have newer seats ,i would even pay more to be on this iconic planes if I have too.
The A380 is the only plane I stop to admire as it flies past my house every day (Emirates DXB-GLA). Misquoting the late great Douglas Adams "it hangs in the air the way that bricks don't".
Love flying with the A380! YMMV.
Wonder if the others that binned off their A380s are regretting that decision now. Super satisfied that the superjumbo survived the pandemic. Air travel is a mode of public transport, so as soon as it was allowed to resume, passenger numbers climbed quickly and routes that saw A380 service, would’ve needed them back sooner or later. Public perception of the A380 has soared in positivity since COVID, I must fly one again to see if it’s really that good. Last time I flew one was 8 years ago, when I was a kid and had no critical thinking to compare the A380 to other planes.

All here are talking about their personal travel experience. I've never flown on any of the two, so I cannot talk about the personal comfort aboard the two. But... what say the accountants of the companies operating them? Have they earned money before the pandemic flying one or the other? I mean, what is the break-even point regarding pax number to make a flight profitable on one and one the other? And now, how is the situation? I read AF, Korean, Thai, Asiana, Etihad, Qatar, Malaysia and China Southern have grounded/retired their A380 or will do so until 2025 and we know that many airlines owning the type and having them still stored are uncertain of putting them into service again. On Wikipedia it is listed with full detail. And I'd say this is far from bright regarding the future of the type. PS: And the total of the orders shrank from 321 units to 251... which are all delivered as of 2021. And one sentence tastes like poison... "While no longer losing money on each plane sold, Airbus admits that the company will never recoup the $25 billion investment it made in the project." Something more to add, guys?

Can’t really understand why more A380s weren’t sold - it’s just the best aircraft for passengers. Thought India & China would snap it up for a start!
Unfortunately Thai Airways just made the opposite decision and plans to sell their 6 A380s. As I fly often to Thailand, Thai clearly lost a passenger and A380 fan to Lufthansa. Thai has 3 daily flights between Germany and Bangkok. I wonder if the A380 could have improved efficiency on this route and possibly others. In addition its a passenger magnet and object of reputation.
