Long sleeves not only have a hard time, becuase players prefer base layers, but also because they don't sell well. Fans wear them in summer (especially national teams, as the tournaments usally are in summer), when you can see them. In winter it's too cold anyways or you can wear a large jersey over a hoodie. Sometimes they are also more costly.

I believe (at least this is how it functions in the AFL - which is an entirely different sport with entirely different finances but I digress) that clubs ask players what shirts they would like to wear over the duration of the season. Probably not upwards of 40+ shirts but an amount nonetheless. I presume that they choose between different fits etc. and therefore for players undershirts offer a means to which to have better and more a simplified choice. Why ask for a set amount of long-sleeve shirts when you could just order normal shirts and substitute with base layers when the conditions call for it?

I actually had one long sleeves goalkeeper shirt...I cut the sleeves off 🤣 A base layer never moves and it's way more comfortable in my opinion. I play gk so I even ditched socks and wear leggings and undershirt to avoid turf burns.

100% agreed. As a fan, I'd take the long sleeve option every time over the short sleeve. They simply look much better. (As a player, maybe not.)

I personally prefer short sleeve kits. I bought 2 long sleeve kits and always regretted that because they weren't as easy to wear depending on the weather. I run pretty hot, though, so maybe that's part of it.

We've gone through exactly the same thing in Rugby. Baggy long-sleeved cotton jerseys were incredibly impracticable and heavy in the wet but iconic and flattering on everyone. They even became a fashion staple thanks to the likes of Any Warhol wearing them. Then Adidas started kitting out the All Blacks and lighter weight short sleeves became the standard until England and France wore skin-tight Nike kits in the 2003 World Cup and it was game over for anything else. Kits between 2005-2011 looked like they were spray-on, which is fine for the professionals (except Andy Goode) but looked awful on Barry the Plumber who turned up at his club on Saturday after a drinking session Friday. Eventually, manufacturers started incorporating traditional features like fold-over collars but I still go for the cotton replicas when I can.

In the 1998 world cup the jerseys were like long short sleeves, that was cool too

I just got an old Aubameyang Borussia Dortmund kit in long sleeves from a second hand shop. Because it's summer here in the Philippines, I have yet to wear it. But I must say, long sleeves are so cool to wear. Hopefully to find more long sleeves in the future.

I love long sleeve football jerseys! Mainly because of being a goalkeeper, and helps protect my elbows. But when I was younger, I always loved the retro style of it all. Especially with gloves!

Big fan of long sleeves. Clubs won’t sell ls shirts as most fans want to wear what the players wear. I support Burnley and they cannot afford to stock multiple shirt sizes in ls as they would lose money. Not enough people want ls shirts and clubs would lose money. Until more players start wearing ls shirts I don’t see it changing any time soon😢

In England there was a move to short sleeves in the 50s before a sudden shift back to long sleeves (Umbro’s Madrid template) in 1962. Although teams using Bukta kits always had short sleeves. This was more noticeable in Scotland where their was about an even split between Umbro and Butkta)

I really miss long sleeve kits.

Not just the long sleeve but also the way the kits fits back then, they were loose and baggy in a way.

Ive always loved buying the long sleve version of the kits that i buy i dont like the short ones idk why but ive always been like that. Plus it just feels so ideal to play in as well especially in the rain or if its a bit chilly

Some of the MLS clubs long sleeve kits were nice. LA GALAXY had some amazing long sleeve kits. Portland Timbers and New England as well.

I actually find that there are more long sleeve options now than before. In the past, they mainly only offered the replica/stadium versions in long sleeves. Some manufacturers offer authentic/player issue long sleeves now.

Couldn’t agree more with you. Genoa dropped a new 4th kit a few weeks ago with a long sleeve option, that was fire and it sold out in 2 minutes before I could scoop one while the other short sleeve one is still available. The people want long sleeves!

I'm a fan of long sleeve jerseys since Beckham wearing England one for 2006 World Cup and I bought some since then, including 16-17 Real Madrid. I can understand players not wanting to wear long sleeve jerseys for comfort (or fashion, whatever they like), but clubs not selling these jerseys is definitely a bad decision.

I live in a hot country but have a lot of long sleeve football shirts. They look better, sometimes with added features and have good cuffs on them too. Something that short sleeve often don't have. They were a very 90s thing but we've seen them more in the last five years I think. I thought they were dying out but they should stay (mostly) alive for the foreseeable future. Just think fans prefer the comfort of short sleeve when they don't have to watch games with jackets on or so forth. Though I find them comfy, not a lot of people do it seems.

In Fifa (or EAFC) they don't even let you wear long sleves even if you select because of "competition rules" so if you play in the prem it will automatically put you in base layers. Also, it's not the same thing, but respect to Rodri for being like the only player repping tucked in shirts.

Arsenal had this long tradition where if the captain chose to wear a long sleeve shirt then the whole team wore long sleeve shirts to follow suit, it was a pretty cool look until that tradition died in 2016 or so? Also was devastated when Adidas stopped producing long sleeve shirts for Scotland after the 2013 release, some bs about not being commercially viable even though they had absolute stunning shirts in long sleeve, check out the 2011-13 Scotland home shirt from Adidas in long sleeve in particular its sublime!

While I normally prefer short sleeve and have worn nothing but short sleeves pretty much since I started playing the game as a 10 year old. Think the decline of long sleeves mostly is due to lack of sales,not viable to wear in the summer especially if you’re wearing casually and the design these days being quite tight fitting. While there are big names like Sergio Ramos,Cristiano Ronaldo and Antoine Griezmann but it’s even rare now given base layers are the trend sure we had Garnacho,Rashford,Sane,Hojlund and Havertz but then even they would sometimes switch to a base layer
