Brilliant No Set-Up Card Trick Revealed!

Ойын-сауық

This effect is Alex Elmsley's, 'Point of Departure', which was orignally published in 'Come a Little Closer...' by Peter Warlock (1953). It was later re-published in 'The Collected Works of Alex Elmsely Volume 2 by Stephen Minch (1994). Thanks to my buddy @SeanDevine for reminding me of the source!
This No Set-Up Card Trick is really fun to perform! It was shown to me by my buddy Doug Edwards, and it is a simple, with minimal sleight of hand. It is one of my favorite IMPROMPTU card tricks to perform when ever I have a no set-up deck of cards. Enjoy!

Slight changes, if someone doesn't trust certain things: 1) if you don't trust your psychology, you could outright tell the spectator that you need "someone" to help you -- do they want the jacks, queens or kings to do that? It just makes having "people cards" a part of the story, so nobody will think twice about it. 2) if you're uncomfortable showing the same card twice -- identical jokers work too :-) The spectator doesn't get to choose anything in this case, though.

All great points! I was going to suggest the Jokers, but these days it seems rare to get identical jokers in a deck lol Thanks for sharing!

This trick really packs a wallop! 😎 love the top down shot. Love the new close up pad. Also, I believe this effect is a classic Alex Elmsley plot, called Point of Departure. Love it!

Ha! I see what you did there 😂Well played. Holy crap, how did I not remember that! Thanks man, I think Aldo Colombini had it on one of his card magic videos and that is where I learned it. The close up pad is niiicccee, TCC makes some killer stuff for cheap. I wanted green but its sold out everywhere :( lol

Looks great from above but any alert observer, and especially kids (because of their lower viewpoint), can spot exactly how many cards are laid aside when watching from the front.

Just get on with the tutorial and stop keep side tracking and over explaining. you can go back over and do the explaining but first show the tutorial without the rubbish in between, It is so annoying and makes you lose the viewer who wants to get on with the trick.

Why don’t you just show both sides. Show the Jack of clubs. Flip over. Show Jack of spades. Flip back, slide out Jack of spades revealing back of Jack of spades that they will think is their card.

The trick is great but the explanation is so ridiculously long that it’s very difficult to follow I’d suggest: 1. Just show the trick, 2. Give a very short summary tutorial, 3. Give a longer explanation if you wish.
