One of the best king marches I've seen! Love Wei Yi's chess

Wei Yi played one of the scariest and best one-sided games of chess I have seen. Ian Nepomniachtchi did everything you are supposed to do and he still got wiped off the board. Black's classical pawn center was not as important as the knight on b5. When Ian Nepomniachtchi very reasonably exchanged that strong knight Wei Yi's bishop dominated the Black knights for the rest of the game.

I've never seen a Masters this close after 9 rounds. Like you said, 8 players could win this. Usually by now it is down to 2 or 3 or Magnus has it in the bag.

the second beautifully elegant game in the tournament, which still is wide open and has delivered some great atacks some horrendous blunders and now a second beautiful and elgant strategical domination. Thanks Daniel

Great king march! Got to say that was AlphaZeroesque. The way black was totally immobilised and white had all the activity. Think the resignation was not a moment too soon.

Miserable black pieces which occupy pure squares are a common theme in high level chess.

the Black knights on d7 and f6 "tread on each other's toes" for most of the game. Thanks for showing Wei Yi's cool-headed play, Daniel!

whacky day of games and great analysis of a game which almost seemed to go under the radar today in amongst the other chaos! I can't imagine a player who hates defending passively more than Nepo and yet he was forced to do that for half the game! Excellent from Wei Yi!

Why can't other tournament organizers learn from Tata Steel? it is by far the best tournament at the moment and has been for more than two decades, at least since I started following chess. :) Those other elite supertournaments are just "ok let's draw, we are getting paid anyway and let's not lose rating points". And this new generation seems lively too. P.S. This is one of the most impressive games I have seen during the last few years. To defeat Nepo like this is no small feat.

Couldn’t agree more. For example, 11:26 no way you’d see this move played in a blitz game. The way the better side can just squeeze and completely shut down the weaker side in these classical GM games is just beautiful IMO!

That opening, certainly had plans I would have not guessed or sought out. And then suddenly Nepo misplays it and is in trouble. Very nice conversion by Yi. Frankly to me, the conversion was the only normal part of the game. Thanks for sharing! :)

Another game in this tournament, where the more active pieces dominate their counterpart. I think Nepo won in a similar style against Nordirbek and there was even a third game, which was won due to the dominating piece. That´s really nice of them, that they play this "theme" tournament for us improving players :)

11:42 White to play hmm…I think h3 is a decent move? Further restricting the f6-knight’s movement before going for the material, there’s no rush. Maybe even Re3 as well to further improve the position before taking on f7. Update: hell yeah

Please check the game Warmerdam-Magsoodloo. The endgame is dramatic and unbelievable. Poor Max, he could and shoul have won, but the resistence Praham put up was phenominal. One for the books!

Parham fought brilliantly. To win such games one needs to calculate right through to the bitter end, and that’s not easy after hours of play, and with an opponent who senses you are struggling!

What happened to Wei Yi? I heard he was punished and can’t compete internationally, also some other things where he dropped off. Glad to see he can compete at the highest level again. People was saying he could have been a future world champion.
