Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Part 1 here: • Intek engine work part...
parts listed below
Upper Crankshaft bearing replacement on a 17.5 hp Single cylinder Briggs and stratton Intek engine. This engine has made a loud tapping noise for as long as I've had it, but it wasn't until I repaired the compression release that I found why.
Parts used:
Bushing and seal kit - Briggs and stratton # 797673 amzn.to/2VpbtP5

I spent along time looking for a video like this, it's not just the big engines that suffer from this, I have a little 3hpI/C engine that also has a failed top bushing which I'm currently repairing

Very helpful indeed! I've got an old 13.5 "flat head" Briggs with the same wear pattern. For the life of me I couldn't figure out why the original bushing's hole didn't line up with the oil port, but now that I know it is supposed to be that way I can slap it all back together

Very helpful video, addressing some areas few other mower videos cover. More than likely, the bearing issue surfaced during your first (manual) rotation of the crankshaft. Unless you suspected the upper bearing, and tested (pre-assembly) for wobble, there was no way to know. The upper seal would have compensated for a slight wobble, covering your view of the crankshaft's out-of-axis movement as it turned. We gave you a ThumbsUP and subscribed, with a bonus for producing the first mower repair video ever to use the superior adjective "redundant".

Yes, very helpful Sounds like I have a new spare starter. Needed a new battery anyway. Nice that you don't have to pull the head and piston to get the crank out

Hey, Great video, as there is very little info on how to replace the top crankshaft bush/ bearing on mower engines. My 27hp Briggs has the same problem and now I feel confident to replace it myself. In fact mine was worse as it moved so much it destroyed the stator. But, with 1300 hrs, I can't complain... I like your honesty as well, admitting you missed it first time around. I did the same, had it back out of the mower after just 6 hrs since having just gone through fixing some internal stuff . Aagghhh!!!

I have a 5 HP flathead, first of what they called the 12000 Series, that has the same problem only the bearings on the smaller ones are just bores in the case. I did the valves in it, put a steel valve guide on the intake, got it all together and "clunk clunk clunk" and the armature was shorting out the coil. I've not seen anyone try to bore those out and drive in a bronze bushing or the like to use as a new bearing surface. Shame, the engine's been well.maintained for 25 years, everything's good in the bore...just a sloppy top bearing. Hate to scrap it, but.... Anyone ever try this?

Thanks, I'm doing a 15.5 right now which gave up. Bushing is def bad as well. Everything on order now, the only difference I have is, the con-rod bolts are two different size diameters, lengths and thread. I found a manual online that states the longer, thinner bolt gets torqued first; and I see why based upon the setup. But they only list once torque spec and I believe it's 100 inch lbs, but I'll have to recheck. If anyone knows the torque for the ones with two sized bolts, please lemme know. Thanks.

On some engines, the 2100 series comes to mind, the hole in the bearing lines up with an oiling hole in the case. 1 bearing may be used for more than one model, some use the hole and others do not, but the hole in the bearing is always there.

I wouldn't worry about the nay sayers bud..you caught something and knew what the issue was when most would have completely missed it. Those who might catch may still have left ot the way it was. Thanks for going the extra mile, doing it right, and sharing it in the vid. BTW.. would this crank shift bearing also be the same one for my 20hp ohv briggs on a 2006 ariens?? Jim

Might be stuck on the crankshaft. They often rust up and it can be hard to get the bearing over it. or something is just binding up a bit.

Did it vibrate real bad before you replaced upper bushing? I just replace cam in 21hp and tearing it back down now because its leaking oil from the new shaft seal

  • @pfun41

Depends. The single cylinder engines always vibrate significantly more than a twin. This one wasn't rattling the whole mower if that's what you mean. I ran at least a hundred hours on it with that worn out bearing, only issue being the noise. This particular engine did vibrate a bit more than others, but you could really only tell by watching the back of the crankcase while it ran. That didn't go away with the new bushing though.

@@pfun41 ok i have the craftsman yts 3000 21hp single, seems to vibrate more when engaging the deck. I thought maybe upper bushing. Don't see no side to side play but some up n down but im pretty sure thats normal. I haven't heard any noises either. Almost gave up on the mower then found ur video and replaced cam n fixed my problem but must of installed seal wrong cause it started leaking.

Is there a lower bushing for this motor? I am working on an 18.5 Intek Plus and there is a massive gap at the lower oil seal causing oil to leak out. Obviously while the motor is apart I am going to replace all of the wearable items but my main concern is the lower bushing/bearing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

These engines don't have a proper bearing on the bottom. The top is replaceable as a new block would be required if it wore out. The bottom doesn't have a bearing as you can replace the sump if there is too much play which is what you'll have to do. You can find them used on Ebay all day long, they typically are one of the few things that survive internal engine failures.

Yeah... So I ripped it half way down the week that it happened. I smoked the bearing (oil pump cover), crank, rings, etc. Ebay it is.

Technically yes, its a bushing. I never claimed to be perfect with terminology, and in most cases it is a bearing.
