THE HOME & GARDEN OF BEVIS BAWA Brief Garden is the masterpiece of Bevis Bawa, brother of the famous Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. Bevis, the elder Bawa brother, began crafting this luscious landscape roughly 20 years before Geoffrey commenced work on his world-famous Lunuganga Estate. The Garden at Brief still holds the stamp of his becoming personality.
In 1929 Bawa was bequeathed the family rubber plantation by his mother, Bertha Marianne née Schrader (1876-1946). The estate's unique name was derived from the fact it was purchased by his father, Benjamin, with funds from a successful legal brief. Bawa realized that he lacked the self-discipline to operate and maintain a successful plantation focused instead on developing the estate's garden. Thankfully, the estate is still maintained and open to the public.
