Janice, so that the mistakes get stopped, could you most kindly provide the proper pronunciation of 'Knechtel'? Thanks very much:-)

  • @Jano437

@@chipco5150 it's pronounced exactly the way Vince Gill pronounced it in the video. The k is silent. I guess if you were speaking and spelling it out it would be Neck toll. That's exactly how it is pronounced. But if you look at the video and when Vince Gill introduces him he pronounces it correctly

I agree. From playing on dozens of 60's hits, to the bass player for the Doors, to the brilliant pianist on BOTW, to the outstanding musicianship on all of the Bread hits. His career is almost untouched in scope and quality.

Knechtel was proficient on other musical instruments, notably the harmonica, guitar and bass, which can be heard on "Mr. Tambourine Man" by the Byrds, "Stoney End" by Barbra Streisand, "If I Can Dream" by Elvis Presley, and the Doors' debut album. In 1971, he joined the band Bread, where his contributions included bass, keyboards and the guitar solo on the hit single "The Guitar Man". He also played on sessions for Nancy Sinatra. -- Wikipedia

Great performance from 2007. I knew of LK from his work with Bread back in the early 70's...one of the first albums I ever bought as a young teen was "Baby I'm-a Want You"...also recognized his name appearing as a musician on many other artists' albums over the years. Never realized until recently that LK played the piano part on the original BOTW recording....I fell in love with that song and album when it came out...I bought the sheet music and played BOTW at my 5th grade piano recital, back in 1970. Still have the faded sheet music, still play it to this day. Thank you LK for making all of our lives richer with your music.

What makes Knechtel's arrangement so perfect is it sounds like the simplicity of my mother knocking out a gospel melody, while providing the subtle embellishments which indicate sophistication in delivery and emotion.

I could kick myself in the ass for not going last year to meet David Gates. He was meeting with a bunch of fans last July in either Oregon or Washington state. I completely forgot because I just got a new job in June. Someone posted a photo on Facebook of David with his guitar at age 72 from the meet. I met David back in 1972 or 1973 after a concert when he looked like he did when they came out with the greatest hits LP.

Two things that I learned that really surprised me about this song: Paul wrote it on guitar (I know it really sounds like it was composed for piano, right?). After the song became hugely popular it became a bit of a burden for Larry because he felt it type cast him as the epic ballady Bridge Over Troubled Water guy and he disproportionately got called to recreate that role for other recording sessions at the expense of fully utilizing his vast musicality... Life is funny huh?

The basic song was written on guitar (I think Paul Simon heard it in his head on piano). Not sure what key it's in (I play piano but not like THAT) ! Sure, Art Garfunkel sang the stuffings out of it. So did Paul Simon; (he wrote it) so does Vince Gill. His singing range is (to my reckoning) right in Garfunkel's range. Vince, like James Taylor, has a very distinctive voice and can sing ANYTHING in any musical genre and sound great. Vince singing "Oh What a Beautiful Morning" from "Oklahoma !" Absolutely. !

According to my Dad (Larry Knechtel), Paul originally wrote the tune with Aretha Franklin in mind... but she declined to record it. So Paul approached Dad about coming up with an arrangement that suited Art's approach. Dozens of recording takes were done, the one that was used was probably take 2 or 3... Dad had erred in inserting an extra verse, so Paul wrote a third verse to match the take ( 'Sail on Silver Girl'). Aretha eventually did record a version later on after the song became a hit.

The answer to your question would more easily be answered if the question were phrased "What did Larry NOT play on that we all would know". Just about any studio album from the 60's is bound to have Larry somewhere; guitar, bass, mouth organ, and (of course) keyboards, and often all of the above.
