I remember back in the 1990s when Sony had a brand of tape cassettes called _CD-IT_ and some of those included 54-minute, 74-minute, and 94-minute recording lengths. I also remember being told that when it came to recording onto tape cassette not to go any higher than 90 minutes since anything higher than 90 minutes would put a whole lot stress on the motor of the tape cassette recorder to pull that much extra tape since they were only designed to playback and record 90-minute cassettes especially 120 minute cassettes. I wore out my mom's dual-deck tape cassette recorder by recording too-many tape cassettes on it that exceed 90 minutes in length, so she ended up replacing it.

I own that player. As every old CD player, it can't read RW discs. Although it reads CD-r just fine. If it struggles with a CDR it is because it has been burned incorrectly/too fast/on a worn out drive. Also, when it closes the tray and ejects it immediately it is because it didn't clamp up the disc. You should replace the loader belt.

The CDs that it spits out seem to be in the same position when they go in and come out. So I suspect the belt for the drawer mechanism could be lose and the drawer doesn't close all the way. And as all cd trays do, it reverses the direction. But not sure why it would only do with some CDs

This player doesn't have problems playing CD-Rs; it appears the optical pickup is fine (looks like a Sony KSS series, probably a KSS-210A). What it does have a problem with is physically loading a CD-R; the times where it just spits the disc out, it seems like it couldn't clamp onto the disc. When it does clamp on the disc and begins reading it, it doesn't appear to have problems reading the disc's TOC and playing back the tracks (which is why I don't believe it's the pickup). Although it's curious that it works fine with regular CDs but not CD-Rs, I'd suspect a worn loading belt, which is concealed by a plastic shroud forward of the spindle motor. It may be the same drive used in model 1 Sega CD units employing a Sony drive. The belt is suspect because of the player's age.

I've had experience with a very old Teac PD-P1 personal CD playing doing that scratchy sound thing with commercially pressed CD's, but that's another story, on my CD player the scratchy sound gets worse as you progress through the disc, your CD player doesn't seem to do that, still the music isn't really comfortable to listen to when it sounds like that. The Top Gun CD sounded OK though, nice clean audio, I'd have liked a bit more bass, but you were just connecting the CD to the camera
