I'm 38 and hadn't skated since 03 until I grabbed some new USDs this past November. Best decision I could've made!

You can see he's getting choked up over these topics from his life and career. Very cool to see how passionate of a man he is. LEGEND.

I think he has more love for blading and what it allowed him to.do and experience, than anyone else. I LOVE LOVE blading. I was never that nasty, could hit hand rails at my best. Now I just skate a few.ledges. but I LOVE rollerblading and I get the brotherhood you can tell Shima appreciates what rollerblading brought him.

It was cool hearing this story directly from shima, I've always wondered what precisely went down.

Went to a NISS event in Seattle in 1998. We started skating towards Key Arena and met two other skaters, one of whom said he wanted to roll down this concrete embankment that came down from the roof of the arena. My friends and I dismissed him and skated away, thinking he was crazy. About a week later, we found out that guy we ditched was Shima and the other guy was Pat Lennen. Yeah, we felt stupid.

hearing Shima speak in this interview shows that truly inspiring people are still down to earth and humble.

Early 90s I used to skate with this dude and he was always pushing it. I have so much respect for what he’s done with skating.

This is heartbreaking to hear , the guy was/is such a legend in the golden era of blading from the 90s through the 00s , there's was a time where everyone i knew rocked those white shimas of his after steal this video. Guy deserves a spot in the hall of fame imo.

damn I cried at the make a wish story. Its so true that things like that or watching your parents die of cancer put the whole life thing in perspective.

A long time ago at Esco skate park I was able to meet Shima. I used to film a lot and I had my camera and I wanted to do a short interview but I couldn't cause in my mind I'm like, this is Brian fucking Shima. The camera was rolling and it was a very short clip of us talking. I wanted it to be an interview but it became a casual conversation and he was asking me questions lol. Humble guy and one of my favorite skaters of all time. Idk if he'll even remember that but it was so dope meeting him and having that talk.

Haven’t skated in 20+ years good to see what a good guy Shima is. Mad respect to him.

maaaaaan Shima was always my guy. Him and Dustin Latimer. I skated at a park called Freestyle in Kennedale, Texas and the USD team was coming. And I was so psyched to do my backflip for Shima and then he left for Razor like a week before. But Latimer was there and was hungover as shit but still hit the biggest rail and they put the picture in Daily Bread.

Don't talk about how big the leap of faith is unless you've been there. I saw it in 2001 and anyone that jumped it has massive balls. It's deceiving because you have to get an insane amount of speed to clear the hand rail. That trip to San Diego and seeing so many iconic skate locations made me respect even more all the pros and amateurs we saw in videos.

I remember breaking my leg. I don’t even attempt to rollerblade anymore. Kinda felt like Shima. I mean I would love to skate again in the future. But I truly just wanted to walk again. I broke my dominant ankle too. I thought about re-learning everything switch, but nahh I can’t even do toe rolls, or manuals anymore. And just not being able to do something as simple as a Manny just made me feel like the experience ain’t worth it if I can’t do all that I was once capable of.

This is a pretty decent podcast. I love skating so much.

It has gotten better I've grown to find positives from both hosts now. But some episodes like eith feinberg they need technique how to rescue it .cuz that toolbag of a great skater just botched your podcast

I have to wonder if he had been in skates that had heel pads would he have still been injured so bad? I think he was skating Razors with raised plastic for heel lift, but what if he was skating Salomon’s with the foam heel cup for raised heel instead of the plastic raised heel of the Razors?

Haven't skated in 24 years, but I remember Shima. Glad to here his stories. These interviewers are way in over their head though. Interjecting when Shima is talking, etc. Just let the man talk, clarify some things he says here and there, and build on what his is saying. But most of all just let him talk. They seem nervous and inexperienced.

my story is similar obviously i didn't jumped leap of faith but i was skating for 15 years and when the major injury happened i knew this is the end. i don't feel bad with it, it was my time to quit

lol remember skating at a nearby school when this fool and his crew roll up (literally) and just completely rock the place. My friend and I left so they could film and they ended up finding us again at the local post office...We think they were following us to get good spots or something. We just watched them, and then police came...so we left and let the pros take the heat lol. good times about 20 years ago

I've heard alot of great things about Shima as well as some somewhat quieter talk that he screwed alot of his personal friends over with rat tail and nimh, everything and was just a terrible businessman . I've never seen him in a long form Interview, his passion for blading comes across so clear. At the end of the day, that's what matters. I'm not crazy right, ppl heard the horror stories about nimh and ssm behind the scenes right? Regardless I bought SSM's to support blader owned business and it was out of business by the time the damn skates shipped, basically . Great customer service tho, legit. They emailed me immediately thanking me for the purchase and were in touch until the skates arrived .

Did Shima really do the most out of everybody in rollerblading?? How did he come to that conclusion? He was just talking about the most humbling experience with the make a wish story. That comes across extremely egoic to say next. There are to some degree endless giants in the world of rollerblading. I don't get how he is placing himself at the top.

I think he means from the perspective of what he’s experienced: travelling, sections, pro skates, company rider, business owner, dealing with manufacturing etc. I think he’s probably right although a few others could claim the same.

Shima is one of the miracle skaters for sure.. But skating career ended for all of us after x games took blading off.. Not sure if this 'sport' will ever return or revive.. Brian's career ender is such a sick gap but it doesnt come across as daunting as it is in the video. It was almost not worth filming . Definitely not in hindsight . To end your career on this unnecessary gap hammer that doesnt even come across visually as how daunting and challenging it was of a spot. Just wasnt worth it. One look thru the lens and they shoulda said forget it, not worth it. But just like Cameron now ALWAYS wears his helmet, everything is hindsight .
