Had the great pleasure installing a washing machine for him he was about to have his breakfast the first thing he said to me was do you want some breakfast mate wonderful man and amazing drummer
Dr.Brian May may you live forever
The late 70's - early 80's wasn't the greatest time to live in Rio and be a hard rock/metal fan/budding drummer. But in comes 1985 and fate (and Ronnie Biggs) ushered me backstage at Rock in Rio where I come across Cozy's drumkit all set up, and I'm there staring "an' all" - and minutes later he comes round with Mr Biggs and says "go on, have a go!" and I ask him "how he does that fill on Stargazer"; he shows me, the Tom - Tom -Bass drum -Bass drum and tells me to "go on, do it". What a day. Still got the pair of hickory drumsticks he gave me, 35 years later. Pity there were no cellphones/mobiles back then, so a magazine photographer took our photo, which is still flying around the ether somewhere...a rock star of that stature could have just not given a flying rat's arse and walked on, but that just shows the temperament of the man. A true icon and great guy. Next time I'm in UK, will definitely include a stop in Cirencester as I'm on my Weetabix/PG Tips/Tetley/McVities spree which I always have to stock up on! Fantastic! Great tribute! RIP Mr Powell

Carl Palmer seems quite uncomfortable. IMHO he should have never been at this event dedicated to the great Cozy. After all, he said publicly that it was "petty" from Keith and Greg to bring Cozy within the band instead of waiting for him (when he was unavailable due to his commitments with Asia). Worse, he requested to re record Touch and Go for a Manticore box set. And the song sounds horrible with Palmer; Cozy put his own magic, it was Cozy's song and he played with dedication and respect all the previous ELP stuff.
Great to see rock musicians getting the same recognition as classical musicians have had.RIP Cozy Powell.
I've got a record of his with Jeff Beck in 1972! He was already an incredibile drummer. No wonder he became one of the greatest ever and I'm glad he's still in the hearts of those who met him and his art
I'm so glad to have seen Cozy play live. Usually, for the non-technical rock fan (as I was back then), the drum solo is time to visit the bar, but Cozy's was the one to stay for. His drum riser flame throwers on the Slide it In tour burned my eyebrows - no joke, but I have no regrets!
Cozy Powell was an amazing drummer, much respect
A well deserved tribute not just one of the good one but the best
I miss you so much, Mr. Cozy Powell, R.I.P, you were truly one of the greatest!
Absolute awesome drummer and a great guy. I remember one concert where he couldn't get in (stage door), and I had a great conversation with Cozy, while he waited to gain access to the venue. Coincidently (at a different concert), I met Cozy's Dad, who let me in to meet all of Rainbow, including Richie. An experience which I will take to my grave. Great times, Great Band, Great Musicians, Great Drummer, Great Guy.
Well deserved, he was a fantastic musician and always delivered. First time I saw him live in the USA was with Blackmore's Rainbow in 1975. He dropped my jaw with his playing that night. What a powerhouse!

I saw that first Rainbow tour too in late 75 at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia. Cozy was indeed incredible, but the show was stopped after a couple of songs because of a super bad hum coming from Blackmore's amps. Found out many years later that it was due to electrical interference from the huge rainbow light

@@jeffreymalack3723 I've read that about the rainbow light interfering with several shows, I saw Rainbow in 1978 in Atlanta and was blown away by the stamina of Cozy Powell and was already a huge fan of him

Also, for the record, Cozy's first concert appearances in America were with the incredible Bedlam when they toured with Black Sabbath and Black Oak Arkansas in late 72.
An icon for rock drumming in the 1970's - 1980's. Had a great style and technique coupled with showmanship. Few drummers even compare. Played with a variety of bands Whitesnake, Emerson, Lake and Powell and many more. A true rock icon.

I don't want to sound disrespectful, but Cozy was the perfect addition to Keith and Greg. Carl Palmer is OK, but I have to admit that Cozy's drums killed it. A hell of a drummer
Glad to see this. Cozy was one of the titans of drumming but wasn't often mentioned along with the other elites. Seems like he is getting more of his due posthumously and that is great.
He used to live down the street from my house, legend!
Absolutely an icon and fantastic drummer, played with many top bands and always made his mark on them.
Best drummer ever imo. Good to see the blue plaque of recognition.
R.I.P. COZY. you left so unjustly !!!!!!! ........

Hahaha Hi David, I was about to put you right until I realised you were joking, Brian of course did not hesitate to accept the invitation. On 5th April 2018 at 2pm we will be laying flowers at the plaque to mark 20 years since Cozy's untimely death with Neil Murray doing the honours, all Cozy Powell fans would be very welcome to attend and join us for a drink somewhere afterward.

I remember walking past this after a shift and watching the unveiling. Very cool that it was done but I bet barely anyone there knew who the hell Cozy even was, they were there to see Brian May. People in the crowd were acting really proud "He's a local legend!" as if they always had this opinion, whilst mistaking him for Deep Purple's drummer rather than Rainbows. A very cynical outline from me but there you go...
Bernie Marsden.but not Brian :-) I am from Ukraine.but know more than your editor :-)
the announcer doesn't even know who the plaque is for...he announces Casey Powell... old goat !!!

Cozy was fantastic. But. Dont drive your car 167 km in bad weather, drunk, using your cell phone not wearing seat belt.
