Brian Law's woodenclocks - Clock 16 - Verge and Foliot
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Clock16 design is based on the traditional Verge and Foliot escapement with a spring drive mounted in the bottom gear. The original design was the first mechanical clock design to be developed in the middle of the 14th Century.
The escapement consists of two flaps mounted on the vertical Verge shaft that alternatively engage and disengage with the series of pegs around the periphery of the escape wheel, the speed at which this happens is controlled by two weights mounted on the horizontal Folio beam.
The larger the weight and the further out it is positioned the slower the Clock will run.
This type of clock design was never very accurate, but it persisted right up to the 18th century. the design was eventually superseded by the much more accurate Pendulum designs.

Spectacular, sensational...I don't have more words because I'm impressed and a little shocked at the same time.
Absolute legend! Great work!
what formula would you use to figure the period of the end weighted beam?
this was wonderful
Super! Thank you very much!
The plans are finished and should be on the website tomorrow.
beautiful!!!
THAT's AWESOME!!!😎
I know your plans cater for the CNC guys but do they include drawings for us scroll saw Luddites?
Where can I get this clock's parts?
Very nice. do you have plans for it?
Very nice
Hallo Brian. I can't get my metal foliot to run slow . The weights are right on the end. I don't want to extend the foliot because that would spoil the look of this good-quality reproduction so I am gradually decreasing the drive-weight by adding to the little counterbalance weight and this seems to slow it down . This seems a viable means of regulating it , but I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere ? I tried increasing the foliot weights. Is it true that the mass of the foliot weights makes no difference to the period of oscillation ? Am I right that adjusting the driving-weight significantly regulates the machine ? Keep up the inspiring stuff ! Best , Bob B. , Brighton , England .
Mecanismo interessante!

How accurate was it?

Not very accurate, but iit is a good looking replica of an historic mechanism.
There is no minutes hand
As far as I can see, this clock has an escapement wheel with 19 teeth. Do you or anybody else know why escapement wheels with odd numbers of teeth became standard? There is no theoretic reason for this except symmetry. You can shift the verge slightly off center and use an even number of teeth. Actually, the famous Astrarium of Giovanni Dondi from 1364 used an escapement wheel with 24 teeth, and one can see a pendulum clock with verge escapement and an escapement wheel with 12 teeth in our video kzread.info/dash/bejne/a6B2qbKSn9Wacps.html.

+Thomas Püttmann I really have no idea why the 19 tooth wheel was used, I copied the design some 25 years ago when I saw a clock in a museum, photographed it at the time and then later counted teeth when I came to build my own. I love your clock projects when they appear on KZread, perhaps you could try the Woodenclocks gravity escapement in one of them

+Brian Law If you ever see an verge escapement wheel with an even number of teeth, please let me know. Your Clock16 was one of the starting points for my first little steps into making clocks. I watched almost all your superb videos as well as those of Ben van de Waal. I learned a lot from them. Thank you. I will certainly try more escapements with fischertechnik in the future probably also your Woodenclocks gravity escapement.

@@woodenclocks Thanks for you great work.
