Charles always makes me emotional because I see him as a loyal puppy dog that can talk. So sweet and innocent.

Saw the film at the BFI on Friday and absolutely loved it. It's incredible to see how far this bizarre double-act have come, from Spreaker, to screen test, to short, to the big screen! Fantastic work by all involved, you should be really proud.

I didn't quite get that bit because, Charles is really quite vulnerable and very trusting. But a film of Charles Adventures would be fun, maybe with another robot?

Charles got his second name from a British daytime TV series broadcast on Channel 4. Launched in January 1997, it chronicled various pets and animals being rescued, cared for, and then either rehoused or returned to the wild.

Took a friend to see the movie yesterday, then got stuck in traffic as a festival headliner finished and all the mum's and dad's went to pick up their 15 year olds in their Mercedes. Was almost at his place, and the police closed the sodding road and put us on a detour through a weird estate. I considered sleeping in my car for an hour and trying to escape when it got quieter, but I persisted and got back home about half past midnight. I'd just like say, SCREW GOOGLE MAPS, NO WAY WAS THAT TEN MINUTES. if it had said 45mins I'd have let him walk back himself. Anyways, glad Brian and Charles got to see the big screen, and fuck Google maps basically.

This is a tender, beautifully rendered film about loneliness that's sure to warm the cockles of your heart. It's a real masterclass of balance, as director Jim Archer blends genres seamlessly. There are laugh-out-loud moments, but it's also very moving -- and, on top of that, it's a science-fiction tale. Though it's not one that struggles to suspend viewers' disbelief, as it sets the scene remarkably well in an authentic way, earning viewers' trust before turning everything on its head. And Earl deftly captures Brian's complexity while demonstrating point-perfect comedic timing. On the downside, it's hard to understand why the filmmakers decided to present Brian and Charles as a mockumentary, as though a camera crew is following Brian around. For starters, it makes no sense why anyone would randomly go and film a man living alone in the middle of a remote Welsh village. Even worse, they lose that style somewhere halfway through. By the end, the film feels like a more conventional dramatic feature, almost as though the filmmakers decided halfway through to scrap the original idea and couldn't be bothered to go back and change it in the edit. But, really, this is a small complaint in a film that's otherwise sweet, funny, and original.
