This was the closest they got to a holiday, it was also back in the 1930s. I'm 67 and am horrified by these nutcases. Age doesn't always bring wisdom. Sometimes they just lie through their teeth. I actually was listening to an elderly lady talking about the war the other week. Later on I worked out she must have been born in 1947 after the war was over. I won't bore you with my life story but I'll just say that it makes my blood boil that my children are having it harder than we did. One of my adult children still lives with us and I honestly don't know how he will ever afford a place of his own. Luckily he's got us. Do they really think if they try to change things to be 'like it was in the old days' they'll look at the mirror and see they've magically regained their youth?

The people like this lady really don’t care about young people. My mother is in her eighties. She consulted with all her kids about the referendum and concluded that her grandkids would suffer if we left the EU so voted accordingly. Her number one thought was what would be best for the kids of the future (and of course her own kith and kin). She knew there would be a long period of adjustment and that whole time her grandkids would be reaching the age of majority in a financially strapped period for the country - and no way would she push that burden on them!

I'm 80 and voted remain, as did my wife of a similar age. My daughters voted remain so that our grandchildren could continue to benefit from EU membership. My wife was born in NI, so she qualified as an Irish citizen and now holds dual nationality (UK and ROI). Our daughters are following suit as they also qualify having an Irish parent, and so will their children by a similar rule. So don't tell me that all the elderly voted leave, some of us weren't senile, deluded or taken in by a pack of blatant lies. Neither are we all xenophobic, racist bigots. Max, sorry, but it's not that young people and students don't WANT to work on farms, it's that the farms are in places that are impractical to get to. They're in the COUNTRYSIDE, with very limited transport links. I used to work on a farm when I was a student, but we used to get bussed there by the agency, because there was no other way of getting there at the time of day we were needed. And I lived in SHROPSHIRE. If I lived in Birmingham, there'd be no chance. VERY few agencies do that any more, and those that do charge the earth for it. This is why seasonal workers from Europe were so important. Not only were they SKILLED fruit pickers, but they would stay onsite for the season, and then move on to the next farm or, crucially, the next COUNTRY. It's nearly IMPOSSIBLE to do that if you have university to attend, or you have rent on a flat to pay. THAT'S why young British adults don't work on farms. They can't AFFORD to. And this stupid old baggage on the radio thinks we still live in the 19 bloody 70s.

Getting paid diddly squat for picking hops or vegetables is not a sensible use of time. People used to do things like hop picking etc because it meant that they got free bed and board during their factory two week holiday and they were grateful to see the sun and be outdoors and that was the only way they could afford a holiday of sorts. Really not easy. Before you literally could jump in your car drive somewhere and start work ... now you would have to plan that all ahead of time and have a job set up ahead of time and all your paper work and you won't be able to work as long because your visa has to be renewed which is only for specific job types. And those are different for every country In the eu. In ireland they would give you a vasa if you're in financial in another eu country they are looking for something else. So if you were a chef or a tourism hotel manager there might not be visa available for that in the country you want to go to where say your girlfriend lives or your aunt lives ... so some people could do it. And she doesn't think of the reverse. Where a French person might be willing to pick hops for the opportunity to go to England and experience a new country they now can't do that either. Travel is something students love to do and don't mind doing a shitty job for the summer to do it. But if they have to be a fiscal adjustment specialist to get a visa they can't just go to Europe and Europeans can't go pick hops in the uk either.

@@martinpenwald9475 but they aren’t still voting for the Tories - as you will see in the Election in July, support for the Tories and Reform combined is way lower than Labour by itself, let alone other liberal parties (Lib Dems/Greens/SNP). This combined with constant polling showing support for rejoining at record highs and staying out at record lows, and a new, pro-European generation entering the electorate- the Tories will be history and the government in power - Labour - who are already saying they want closer ties with the EU - will begin to do the will of the people - which nowadays is reopen talks with the EU!

The difference was 50 years ago you may know a farmer, whereas now due to things like brexit, assets jumping up in price, conglomations, multi nationals, selling of farms in commuter areas and poor prices from supermarkets. There are not as many farmers, especially not on the edge of population centres. The irony of course all these things is what she said is supported and is complaining when the consequences occur.

I gave up and changed the subject. She thoroughly approved of the cut to child benefit for more than two kids. I countered with the need for 3 kids per couple to maintain replacement level and supply workers paying tax for future pensions......she'll vote Tory 😢....while working 30+ hours a week in a supermarket and living in social housing at half the rent she'd pay for private ......
