All the debates on here prove one thing - Brett Kenny is underrated in the wider rugby league community. Wally is an immortal. Kenny, despite the fact that every player who played with him and against him says he is one of the greatest ever, hardly gets talked about. One of the problems I think, is that Qld always talk up the Qld way, and bring in the old guys, and look all the way back to Arthur Beetson, while NSW always look forward and if they look back, it's only to the Phil Gould years or maybe Turvey Mortimer kissing the ground. We need to do more to promote the great players of NSW that people don't talk about - O' Connor, Jack, Tim Brasher etc. Brett Kenny is one of the greatest players of all time and yet you have to trawl through youtube to find that out.

My mother was running Burleigh bears juniors and gold coast juniors for a couple for decades and she worked at Miami High school, she managed to get Wally to come to our sports awards night and introduced me and we had a small chat...he was amazing..i was awestruck..i think it was 85/6...low and behold when i was in year 11, i played with his younger brother Heath, a very good player in his own right, in winning the state schoolboys touch footy in 87 at Toowong...all that inspired me to go on and represent my state etc many times...thank you Heath and Wally....not to mention origin ignited people in ALL sports when it came to representing qld....

Brett Kenny any day over Wally. Over the last 15 years all that footage from the '80's has slowly been put up on KZread ( thanks to guys like NZ rugby here) and you can make your decisions yourself after watching the games involving these two greats, Wally was a big fish in a small pond in Brisbane and his reputation was greater than his game imho. Kenny highlights are spectacular and all over the tube, Wallys not so much.

2 of the existing League Immortals Wally Lewis and Mal Meninga - Kenny replaced each of them and took both their Australian spots - Kenny kept Wally out of five eighth and Meninga out of the centres in 1986 - proof that Kenny is better than both of them !!

Well if that’s proof that he’s better than both what do we do with the fact that Wally played 35 international games for Australia, 32 at 5/8 and not one out of position after 1982 or 28 consecutive tests at 5/8, compared to Bret Kenny playing a miserly 17 games for Australia just 5 of which he was a 5/8??? Mal played 47 games for Australia and was the centre in 41 of them. Sounds to me like Brett Kenny wasn’t on either of their levels was he.

Brett Kenny is a great player..but he's a centre compared to Wally. It's not a contest. Wally could control the speed of the game with his theatre and kicking just to begin with. Wally had so many skills to use. Kenny was a great athlete and was full of natural skills but he would have been on the bench for Queensland in the 80s when Mal and Gene were the centres✌

All this hyp over Brett Kenny better than Lewis what planet are you come from clear NSW and Kiwi bais between 83-85 Lewis was far better then Kenny may of had it over in a handful of Games,it was Michael O'Connor that made Brett Kenny look better in game 1 of 85 & 87 and 86 on Origin, but come game 2&3 85 and game 2 87 to game 3 89 no one has ever past that record Wally was simply better over all and Langer made sterling and Kenny look like an old man.

The game 1 of 85 and 87 you are referring to...do you mean the tries O’Connor scored that Kenny directly set up in both of those games? O’Connor was recently on a podcast and said that he learnt early in origin that if he followed Brett Kenny around he would score tries so that’s what he did. O’Connor also said that he has no doubt in his mind that he thinks Brett Kenny should be an immortal. In game2 of 85, Kenny scored the match- sealing try to secure the series for NSW (standing up Wally to do so). In 86, Kenny and Sterling were dominant and NSW won the series 3-0. Kenny’s record at State of Origin level when directly opposing Lewis at 5/8 was 8 wins, 4 losses. Not the be all and end all stat, however it is surely indicative of the impact Kenny had in that period. That is not me arguing anything about Kenny being better than Lewis, however I’m pointing out some facts in relation to what you said. Both great players and Lewis’ record at Origin level is second to none. However, Kenny too was a marvel and Wally says it himself.

Kenny was the difference between NSW & QLD in the 85 & 86 origin series. He won the series for the blues. Watch the try he set up for O'Connor in origin 2 in 1986 - I don't want to Knock Wally Lewis, but there is no way Lewis could have set up that try, the way Kenny did.
