    The only consistent thing about how the term “cancel culture” is actually being used, is that ever invoked only to defend socially regressive behaviors and opinions. It doesn’t get used when leftist professors get fired or mobbed out of their job for making broad generalizations about white people. It didn’t get used when a black athlete was blackballed for protesting police violence. It doesn’t get used when a government health expert’s family receives death threats for stating widely accepted facts about an ongoing pandemic. It DOES get used when a senator uses a major newspaper to advocate the violent repression of peaceful protesters, knowing full well than a mentally unstable authoritarian is listening, and loses that particular privilege. It DOES get used when a billionaire novel author uses her platform to conflate an already oppressed minority with groomers and rapists, and suffers backlash. Please note that only the last two cases (which were what inspired that Harpers letter) clear Weinstein’s “might get innocent people killed by crazies” bar.

  • @gnomechomsky2524

    @gnomechomsky2524

    3 жыл бұрын

    Alex Cereuceta Good point, let me take another stab at it. He's obviously making a distinction between "cancel culture" and "getting fired with cause". Cancel culture to me always involves a sort of outside "third party" outrage mob demanding person x should not be allowed to do thing y any longer, even if thing y has nothing to do with something person x did wrong. For example if person x is a graphic designer and years ago in his personal life tweeted something offensive to Inuit eskimos, an outrage mob can demand he gets fired from his graphic design job. One could argue the tweet has absolutely nothing to do with person x's competence as a graphic designer or his performance at his current job, so calling for him to get fired is different than, say, he screwed up a major account or failed to deliver a project on time or sexually harassed one of his coworkers. That's probably the most charitable interpretation I can think of.

THERE WERE NOT SAMS ARGUEMENTS, Sam could call him whatever he wants, all Sam said was thay he should know his name by now. If Wienstien is the one saying you should be fired for not properly doing your job, with him in the position he is in (nationally broadcaster pf the truth), doesnt that start with the miniscule task of learning someones name and absolutely end with not conflating terms. It is not obvious that it is an innocent mispronunciation. In Australian slang at least, a 'lech' pronounced in the same way that Weinstein did, is a person of low moral character because they sleep around (or desire and attempt to), ie, a 'lecher'. It may not have the same meaning in US slang, and the connection may be entirely accidental, but when somebody persists in the mispronunciation of a name despite correction, it is often due to a desire to insult.

    I just found this guy annoying until he started hand wringing about DHS thugs. Now I loathe him.

    When he explained why matt needed to be fired, he babbled some words under his breath and moved on without any clarification. If a pilot is drunk- Fired! If a surgeon is dirty- Fired! If a journalist... uh, says... uh, a thing about people interacting........ and such- Fired! what the fuck does that even mean?!

    To an extent, Brett IS doing what they accuse him of doing: being pedantic, and narrowing in on details while skirting a deeper critique. But it is not surprising that Brett took issue with the implication in Matt's tweet, given that it was indeed poorly constructed and arguably designed to suggest an association between Brett and the DHS. Appraising the tweet with a dispassionate lens, one sees the tweet was not charitable and functions to stain Brett's reputation (this is not to deny the possibility that Brett in fact sides too firmly with state authority and law & order politics, however, that is irrelevant here). If Matt had substantive reasons for clarifying the true nature of Brett's association or lack thereof with DHS, instead of just lobbing off flippant twitter-sensationalism, he would've asked Brett about it. I think he has realized this. Indeed, Matt is the only one in this video who betrays awareness about how his tweet was indeed problematic. He notes that he was being 'haughty' and that writing 'this consultation work', emphasis on the word 'work', was wrong. Sam sounds like a complete moron trying to defend the tweet; when he's being unreasonable, he really commits, and here it's just fallacy after fallacy. Anyways, this is all dumb and I agree with Matt that we should redirect focus back to the material, substantive issues, not the milking of relatively minor grievances.

    Nick Mosley yes. From watching this clip there seems to be a real investigative bend on Matt’s part. Sam’s more interested in being a personality just like Laura Ingraham.

    This made me laugh out loud! Thank you, Sam, Letch, and the TYT Team. Just kidding. I don't know what's wrong with these Weinstein's? They seemed like interesting intellectuals but now they're just whiny smart sounding goofs? Once again; thanks for the comedy. Thank you for posting. 😊

    Nah, they were never "intellectuals" like every other part of the Dork Web, they cosplay as being smart but are really just in it for the grift. They repackage old ideas with new words and sell them to people who are incapable of thinking critically.
