    Woo-hoo ! As I watch this I am carding my Icelandic wool. I card the whole fleece together, not separating the coat. It spins up into a very strong single ply.

    "We like watching these! We're learning a lot. We like how you DON'T say 'subscribe below' -- my 8 year old Nadia. We had friends who just sold their small flock of Icelandic sheep BEFORE they sheared them. Was so sad, but they were so annoyed with how dumb their animals were and the extra work it caused them. So, it's good for friends to be at peace, even if I didn't get to try spinning some of their fleeces!

    I have predrafted, but it is usually when I'm spinning from a batt or rolags, but you are right. Stripping roving does create something similar to predrafted fiber (but it's easier).

    Awesome video! If you find a lottery where it's easy to get loads of money, please tell me as well, I'm looking at my yarn shelf and my wallet and I can see a clear pattern there.. It would actually be nice if you'd made a video just showing different types of spinning one after the other. As a newbie spinner it takes a lot for me to understand the differences. Also, I was wondering, what sheep breeds do you consider as next to skin? I do understand that it's a preference and as I understand it can depend on where the sheep is from and so, but still :)

  • @FiberLoveDiary

    @FiberLoveDiary

    I would consider CVM ( most that I've had) Cormo, and Merino to be all next to skin softness.

    These are such fun spins, what uses do you usually see for the Icelandic yarn vs the Jacob yarn?

  • @FiberLoveDiary

    @FiberLoveDiary

    3 жыл бұрын

    I have mostly seen Icelandic in Lopi style sweaters, but I'm sure there are lots of creative uses. You could use Jacob for almost anything, because there are so many types of the fleece. It just takes the right fleece for the purpose.

    as ive said previously, i raise icelandics and i love the breed as an animal. but, i dont love spinning their fleece. its sooooo much work, and as i dont weave yet, i dont have a good use for the yarn. ive toyed with the idea of adding another breed to improve the fleece, but hubby doesnt want to mess around with it. we know what to expect health wise from icelandics, and adding another breed's genetics can cause other conditions that we wouldnt otherwise have.

  • @FiberLoveDiary

    @FiberLoveDiary

    I was surprised how much I liked spinning them blended, but I think like all breeds, there is a lot of variation. It would be really interesting to know what types of success other shepherds have had introducing the genetics of other breeds to Icelandics because they are kind of unique.

    I don't have a "go to" because it completely depends on what I want to make. For socks, if you would prefer to avoid superwash, Dorset and Suffolk will tend to wash without felting, so I like them. If you are okay with Superwash, I like something superwash with nylon added to make the yarn stronger.

    I have a carding question. With really long staples, like the Icelandic, is it better to put it through the carder lengthwise or widthwise? You didn't get anything caught on your licker, but I always do ;-)

  • @FiberLoveDiary

    @FiberLoveDiary

    3 жыл бұрын

    There's no better or worse really, it's just more how you like it. I just thought this time I would alternate with some going in at an angle to see what I thought. And the licker - This is why I still have two carders. The licker on the Strauch is completely different from any other one I've seen, and rarely do I get anything caught. The pins are like tiny little blunt blades without a bend like the pins on other carders. I wish they would all use this stuff, but I think it's proprietary.

    Question: what’s the difference between Jacob and Merino? I have spun Marino and like it.

  • @FiberLoveDiary

    @FiberLoveDiary

    3 жыл бұрын

    They are very different, but both great for different things. Merino is typically longer, much, much finer and has a uniform crimp. Jacob has a disorganized crimp, isn't as fine, and is generally shorter. There are always exceptions. There are more differences, but that's an overview.

    Can you tell how you separated your Icelandic in the past? Do you need a carder to separate long and short fibers?

  • @FiberLoveDiary

    @FiberLoveDiary

    3 жыл бұрын

    I did it with a dog brush, but you could use a comb or almost anything. It is easy, just a lot of labor. You just hold a lock firmly at the tip, and push the comb or brush into the lock around the middle, and comb straight out the cut end. The shorter undercoat will just pull right out easily.

    I previously spun some Icelandic (white) from Paradise Fibers that was definitely roving; it is not as soft feeling - before spinning - as what I have now. Is that possibly because it is roving rather than top? I have a couple of ounces left, will try to spin it shortly to compare. I did card Woolgatherings’ before spinning.

  • @bluescoop3132

    I noticed, when carding, a lot of the short softer fibers stayed on the licker drum; I manually added to the bigger drum.

  • @FiberLoveDiary

    I'm no expert, but I really think it's more just the variations in fleeces and flocks. The raw fleece I had was WAY coarser in the overcoat than the fiber I just had the chance to spin.
