@@veganpotterthevegan depends on the style of race. For this race and Paris Roubaix last year, I can't think of a more formidable pair. But at Flanders or Strade Bianche, Phillipsen's not a real threat. To me, what sets them apart isn't just their physical ability, it's their willingness to sacrifice for each other. There have been some really strong teams, but teamates were racing each other. To me, those teams aren't quite the same.

What a FINISH! One of the best line ups and best finishes I've seen in a long time. The solo breakaways are cool... for the guy breaking away. But they make for boring spectatorship. I'm not a hug Pidcock fan per se but I found myself rooting for him at the end. Imagine the euphoria of a race like that--against other riders at that level--just ripping each others legs off until the very last centimeter of tarmac. Love it.

The close finish comes down to the reality of the disproportional advantage of drafting vs solo riding. When racers are at peak physical condition and speeds are high, there isn’t enough physiological difference for one rider to do the ~30% higher effort needed to both overcome the draft advantage of their opponent and drop them. Now, if it were inches after 300km of time trialing solo, then that would be remarkable!

Its all relative to say pogacar is limited is limited in lots of ways. Get a slovenia national team to ride all in for him hes already got silver in olympics and bronze in worlds with no help. Hes never had organized support of primoz, matej, and jan anything close to a dutch, belgian, italian, or danish team. Guy Podiums his first GT ,wins first TDF, and bosses his first flanders no shame in losing to Mathieu. Then bosses and solos flanders following year before dominating ardennes, 2nd in tour with no prep, and 3rd a worlds that rode like a crit race what are limitations? He just outsprinted mads pederson in MSR! Placed in front of two world champs VDP did lead out tadej animated entire race. Hes the marked man in every race he enters animates every race he enters. At 25 paris nice and tirreno are done and dusted beat vingo last year in nice year before in tirreno neither were close he needs GT attrition to best him on long climbs. I do think VDP is also totally unique also and pure born racer this generations roger de vlaemick or first VDP however you like he was born to race tadej was born to win any style. Tadej reminds me more of coppi more than cannibal almost an enigma and bit of romantic about sport and rides with pure panache. Congratulations, Philipsen! Bam! What a great finish to a great race. Breakaways are okay, but I prefer a good sprint finish. The bunch wasn't reduced enough for MVDP to win, and he really ended up becoming a lead-out man for his teammate. Which is okay as he's a solid sprinter, but not a pure sprinter, and he is not only a champion, but a team player too. There was way too much horsepower in the pack and the hills weren't big enough for Pogicar to simply ride away like he did a couple of weeks ago. Pogicar is the best overall racer in the world right now, but there are people who are equal or better depending on the circumstances. He'll still clean up this year as long as he's healthy.

Just noticed that Matthews loses his glasses during the sprint! Crazy finish. MVDP really went all in for JP several times - cool to see from the World Champ. Helluva race and kudos to Phiipsen for finishing it off. Was pulling for Pogi, but fantastic race all around. Great podium!

I love this race. Always unpredictable. Such a long distance and it comes down to the last few kilometers. Alpecin deserved it as they did the most work with Lidl-Trek. UAE didn't help them but failed at Cipressa and Poggio anyway.

At 3.52 the attack. MVDP doesn't hesitate, he looks back and waits for Phillipsen to get back in the slipstream, gap goes up, then he puts in a huge effort to close the gap for his team mate. Team work at play, great tactics: If Phillipsen survives Poggio, MVDP works for him. Well deserved win. POGO sprinting to third! WTF 😂

Great attempt by Pidcock🇬🇧!!! I thought he might just pull that off!!! Valliant effort!! Whoever says that was a boring finish is full of it. Philipsen hasn't shown us much yet this year but he was the best man today. Chapeau!! I'm just glad MVDP didn't win. Lets not forget about Pogi tho. He was quite explosive💥 in that one attack and then he was mixing it up in the sprint. The lad never stops amazing us. Maybe he'll deal with the heat better this year. We all know thats his kryptonite. Absolutely great finish!! Major upset for Matthews!! I would rather see Matthews win instead of Philipsen but Philipsen⚡ was the better rider today. Chapeau!! 🤘🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

A gutsy ride is words used when a rider comes up short at the end. What no one seems to mention is that it was a gutsy performance yet again from the greatest sprinter in cycling. He actually, over a period of two years, went nose to nose with GOAT Sprinter Mark Cavendish (Bang bang finishes). He Took the throne. Who could forget le Tour 2021 when he was right there, only to have Cav win those 4 stages. There were at least 10 wins for Jasper like that over Cav. Along with as many close losses. No sprinter ever, not Kittel, not Greipel, no one ever matched up with Cav as many times. Like I said last May, Cav should've gone straight from the Colosseum in Rome into retirement. If you looked up Kittel and Cav le tour stages, you'd eventually find a couple times both were involved in the finish. Kittel should not even be mentioned in the same conversation with Cav. As a Manx Missile fan, I never gave up hope, but things are looking quite dim this year. Two years I've waited for Astana to actually ride as a team and it just seems too tall an order.

Cav has won a lot more than Kittel, I guess that's beyond discussion. Kittel had a much shorter prime. But he seemed unstoppable then, head and shoulders above anyone else at the time.

I think Pogacar not letting Pidcock go infront of him at the descent when they had a small gap was a critical error, he should've followed Toms wheel instead and they could've created a bigger gap and he can roll the dice at the line with his sprint
