The appoggio breath management system is by far the most significant aspect of helping us sing consistently in tune and throughout the various ranges of our voices. In this video I give you a quick tutorial on how to align your posture and what to do to establish appoggio along with a few exercises to start your practice. Enjoy!

    This breathing exercise was brutally crucial to find and add to my warm-up, I've heard about the technique now I'm happy you dissect it for learning and practicing, thanks.

    Hi Jeff! First I just want to say thank you so much for doing this. I’ve been very insecure about my singing voice all my life and even more so since I went from a tenor to a baritone/bass last summer. After that I’ve never really been able to sing the same but with your videos I’m beginning to understand a lot more and I am forever grateful! Now to an actual question: I can’t seem to get the expansion and I don’t know what to do. Any tips on getting that to work? Thanks again and best wishes to you! :) -Victor P.S Sorry if my wording isn’t the best, English isn’t my first language

    Great question! Your english is awesome, thank you for that! Getting expansion initially can be tricky. Try using your arms over your head or doing 'the lean' kzread.info/dash/bejne/eYOns9iyd7u0mc4.html Jeff

    Thanks so much for this Jeff , just to clarify again we have to keep the diaphragm in the distended position all the time while singing ? During quick riffs does the same rule apply ?

  • @JeffRolka

    @JeffRolka

    6 жыл бұрын

    I don't know if I would actually say distended. The diaphragm, believe it or not, is largely passive in singing. I realize, that runs contrary to most of what is talked about when talking about breath support. Please do not take my word for it. Read up on appoggio from Shirlee Emmons or Richard Miller. It was studying their work that helped me realize what was wrong with my singing and how to fix it. Best, Jeff

  • @samB842

    Great explanation, thanks for these videos! Just a question on the expansion: what happens to the belly? Does it also have to stay expanded, or should it contract while maintaining the rib cage expanded?

    Hi Jeff, I wanted to ask, should we still be aware of our breathing and ‘mentally’ make the decision while singing? Or should I trust my body to do it automatically as I’ve ingrained it during vocal exercises? Thank you! Soharm

  • @JeffRolka

    A little bit of each really. Focusing on it during practice can be very helpful. Later it'll become habit, but you can always turn towards it if you find yourself having difficulties. Best, Jeff

    I suspect you might feel them engaging, but it's more persistent than explosive. That being said, physical sensations are subjective and it may feel different to you! Jeff

    Do you engage your stomach and let that sink backwards?

  • @JeffRolka

    @JeffRolka

    Not exactly. It's more of a persistent engagement of the core body muscles....

    When we take in air we push the stomach backwards?and expand ribs

  • @JeffRolka

    @JeffRolka

    4 жыл бұрын

    Not exactly. It does, however, depend a bit on the shape of your person. Mostly, mine remains in place, though I am conscious of engaging the muscles there. Have a look at this: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qXak1sNug9feeKQ.html Jeff
