It's easy to overlook wider interval practice. For vocalists, this means intervals greater than a fifth. In this video I take you through some familiar patterns to get going. Head over the secondo passaggio in fairly short order and then practice some wider intervals. I wrap up this short but fierce warm up with a minor tonality palate cleanser.
Enjoy!

I love these exercises patterns and how they more closely express intervals likely to be encountered in actual singing. Dabbling in the minor scale really breaks up the monotony of daily vocal gymnastics. Thank you so much for your generosity!

Jeff i love how you always say your name as a question at the beginning. Jeff Rolka???
Hello Jeff, I am a musician from Bangladesh who recently is on a singer-songwriter pursuit. Your exercises are improving my singing by leaps and bounds. I would like to make a query, your exercises are based on the vowels, are their any exercises that can help improve the consonants and use of tongue in pronunciation?

Good question! I haven't done a lot of that - but there is some here: kzread.info/head/PL2mQP7sE6PHg7Um6BQ4cjCY964Qfr0C8_ I'll have to do more though... Thank you! Jeff

@@JeffRolka Thank you so much! You are amazing
On the subject of Vowel modification, using 'A' as an example. Is it better to allow the A to open and naturally become an Ah, or consciously sing the Ah? Cheers Jeff

It really depends. The way you articulate, 'allow the 'e' (from the IPA sounds like 'hay') to open up' gives me some concerns about how those vowels are aligning for you. That being said, yes, the vowels modify in the direction of the schwa vowel, and along way, modifying from 'e' to the schwa we would modify through 'a' (from the IPA, sounds like father). Great question! Jeff
I had a bit of a tough time with this exercise but I'm kind of new, thought I'd try it after doing a few weeks of Baritone Warmups over and over. Where does this stack up in terms of difficulty? Should I stick to the general scales and build up to this lesson later? Or is it good to mix it up even I can't do this well yet? If singing was a workout regimen, how should I approach this?

Great question! Any video labeled as a 'Daily Warm Up' is going to be fairly challenging. It assumes that you can make a smooth transition over the secondo passaggio and have good overall vowel alignment across the registers. If you're finding it challenging, I would suggest a few things. Use videos for your fach without 'full range' in their titles as your basic fundamental warm ups/practices. They're all about good technique and vowel alignment below the secondo passaggio. Use videos labeled with 'sing over the break' or 'how to sing in head voice' as practices to work on that transition. Break up any of the Daily Warm Ups into sections and use a section a day as a way to expand your technical palette. Anything that is too high or too fast to use vowels with do with the lip trill instead and then come back to it during your next session. I hope that helps! Jeff
Will these exercising make me better at singing?
@AngelxXxDarken
6 жыл бұрын
Loving Life Yes they will but I think you should try a much more easier warm up considering this is more intermediate and requires much more agility and technique, therefore you should try one of his other videos. And also note that a easier video doesn’t mean that it will help you less then a harder one, think of it as building a brick wall, you always have to have a good foundation. :)

With consistent practice and attention to your voice, yes, they can help. Best, Jeff
Is there a need to warm up before these exercises? I feel I don't start with my voice quite prepared for the very first exercises. Not sure if that's prejudicial.
@JeffRolka

Maybe - I also may have gone too fast in this particular video. You may try one of the 'gentle' warm ups. Those can be really nice to get a gentle start to your singing day: kzread.info/head/PL2mQP7sE6PHgeixPDzzJHElQpUDoHwvK6 Thank you! Jeff

My high tones are very breathy in the higher keys :(
Hey Jeff! Have noticed that my voice is much better when i sing quieter. When I try to raise the volume i just feel like im forcing air through and it gets a bit wobbly and uncontrolled. Do you have a lesson that would target this, perhaps? Cheers :)
@JeffRolka
4 жыл бұрын
I will think about that - airflow is very subjective to the individual and how they're adducting the vocal folds. I'll give it some thought and get something together. Jeff

@@JeffRolka i think a lot of it is helped, in my case with the Appogio breathing. Part of it is that was trying to suck in as much air as possible and ending up with far more than necessary. perhaps some appogio exercises in addition to technique?
