BoFII is the most overlooked JRPG in my opinion. If you can tolerate a few flaws and enjoy a challenge then you are in for a great time. One of the best RPG battle systems and stories that nobody ever talks about, it seems.

Mechanically, it’s a big step up from BoF 1. But I didn’t really like the start which kind of soured the story for me in 2. I think thats just a me thing though.

I beat this game a few days ago. It has a ton of flaws especially the final dungeon and I prefer the slightly enlarged sprites in BoF I's battle screen, but it was a great experience overall.

And I love the music and art style, very rarely do I see Harpies in anything so this is my favourite rendition. Inspired me to make my own for my BoF-inspired game series. Plus for my not being a religious person I get along with the religion themes in this quite well, surprisingly... This is my favourite game out of the lot, especially nostalgia-wise.

Easy early grind is at the start of the mountain. That fountain is an infinite healing spot, so just grind up to lv 5 or 7 if you want to be overkill for a while. Also, Katt and Rand are my favorite characters in the game.

Ooh thats a love/hate thing for me. It sure is exciting and keeps u focused, but it can prohibit u from continuing the story at times. I suppose ur a big fan of Final Fantasy 3 and 4 then? I remember those having really difficult and scary random encounters at some points

I was 10 when this game came out and I have absolutely LOVED it ever since. I'm mainly a J-RPG player so I do not mind level grinding or encounters (FFS I have beaten The 7th Saga several times!). But even back then, I knew the translation was atrocious. And to this day, it is probably the worst I have ever seen. HOWEVER...that doesn't completely detract from the fucking incredible storyline this game has. Ugh, a BAD religion? How much better does it get?! And then someone made a retranslation patch... :) Also game music is one of my favorite things in this world. This game in particular seems to have an equal mix of really catchy stuff, neutral songs, and ear-grating compositions. I would definitely rate the music in BOF1 higher - and as far as BOF3, I will just say that is in my top five favorite game soundtracks ever!

Yeah, I guess I consider SNES era RPGs my specialty :P although it took me many years to be able to do it. Esuna as your main choice is the easiest, plus either Kamil or Wilme, if you want to get through it yourself.

As a kid I had to learn english to understand this game, I remember playing the game with the dictionnary nearby. I didn't get the whole story before my 3rd run though, but when later on we started english at school, I was way ahead of the other kids thanks to BoFII

Not enough people talk about some of these RPGs. BoF2 was technically my first rpg. I played it a bit to help my uncle level up his characters but would later revisit this game with my own save file and copy some day. I have to agree 100% with one thing in your quick review. That mechanic of having your own town. Even my uncle didn't realize until I showed him that you have so much control with who and what goes on in the town.

Protip: Use Bow (and eventually Katt) at the beginning of the game to hunt for roasts. They sell for 200 zenny each and make the grind a lot easier at the beginning of the game, when having the best equipment is very important. Later on there are better ways to make money, but 200 each is huger early on.

***** The beginning of each of those games is heavy with exposition, but I get your point. CT has essentially no grinding at all the whole game. FFVI I grinded for AP to get everyone the abilities I wanted, but I guess it's not required. Lufia II I don't remember grinding much, just to feed the capsule monsters. I guess the grinding in BOF II didn't bother me much, and like I said I only did it at the beginning of the game

if I happen to get any roasts I save them for strong bosses, I only grind with fishing at the first fishing spot to buy all gear from the first town.

I'm 32 now and got the gamecube game boy player for Christmas off my wife , also got breath of fire 2 mint condition. Played it once as a child and I love it all over again its addictive

Personally, the only time I actually had to grind was when you had to defeat Baba (I think that was his name) so that you could fight in the arena, save Kat, and obtain Rand. Other then that, the enemies were never a real problem. Most of my "grinding" was walking everywhere if I don't have to use the whale or bird in order to get to where I needed to go........then I got Bleu and you might as well have hacked the game to bring me to the end because it was that easy.

The translation is actually very interesting, in some cases it gives the game creepy vibes that if I would have played when I was a kid, would have had me thinking of back stories and lore on my own.

I always enjoyed the detail of going into towns at different times of the day, early morning, sunset, that sort of thing. To think of that minor detail always impressed me, you never see that in other RPGs.

What a great overview of my favourite video game! Though, unlike the reviewer, I really LOVE the music in the game.

I remember an old friend of mine and myself really enjoying Breath of Fire 4 on PS1. Spent a bunch of time figuring out which transformation combinations were our favorite 👍

The Monster Meter doesn't tell you when an enemy is near. It tells you how many more enemies are in the area. On the overworld screen, encounters never stop. However, in dungeons or anywhere that isn't the overworld there is a battle count and fighting slows the "monster meter" guy down until he's sleeping which means you've killed all the monsters in that area and they'll never come back. It's a great way to tell how much you are supposed to grind - basically keep killing enemies until they are all dead in every area and you'll be about at the suggested level for the next area. If you still find the next area difficult you can always grind in the overworld.

The rabbit thing moves with monsters around. It always does it on the fields. When you go in a town it sleeps, indicating no monsters. It's sole purpose is 1 mission of the game.

to this date this is still my favorite game of all time

First RPG my brothers and I ever played. The story was amazing and set us on the path of RPGs. Nothing has touched it sense. Will always be my favorite game. And the encounter rates? Well you had to work for your accomplishments in this game.

I ought to play both of these games since they are available on the SNES service on the switch online

The story was quite epic because as it unfolded it really made you feel like the entire world was about to spill open and release legions of dangerous demons on the unsuspecting masses. The difficulty of the battles had one positive effect in that the further in you got the more you felt like you were playing for keeps...and then when you finally get to go down to the home of the demons, it was like entering a portal to hell, and only THEN could you meet the dragons!

+skykid I love the way they did the "bad religion" plot. At first you weren't really sure what the problem was but then people started turning into demons and all this talk about some strange new religion....and man, the hits just keep coming and coming in the last 1/3 of the game, revealing all these terrible things about the demon and what it is doing!

breath of fire 2 is the best rpg ive ever played. i remember how much i enjoyed this game, i farmed the big monsters island. i fished for the best stuff. i got all endings. i repeat the last dungeon with every party member, just to see the "and now your life is over". and even though the beggining was hard like you said, i didnt mind because i was a kid with alot of time.

I love the secondary fusion forms. Especially the small Armadillo form of Rand.

The problem I have with the joinings (fusions) is they leave when your HP is low and the end of the game is so far away (with no teleport), it makes it harder to even think about relying on joinings for power. They are fun to know and see, but I'd rather just go at the game as is.

I loved this game, and remember when you obtained the Dragon transformation ability, it still remains one of my favorite things in videogames

This is one of my all time favourites. It’s not a perfect game but beyond the faults is simple yet fantastic characters, world and story. Just look past the translation, not that hard to do. Going solo with stem can suck if you aren’t prepared and first time through you probably aren’t. I still play this game maybe once a year. It’s the game that made me love RPGs.

I remember playing this in 1999. I was so in love with the idea of Bow and Ryu having their own place with a job trying to get by. I was fourteen but I thought that was a really unique idea.

A 2d HD Remake of this for the switch would be THE DREAM.

i played this as a kid when i started the game when i was about 8yrs old, i didnt pass this game till i was about in middle school in 8th grade. too many hours too count, and dialogues too remember, but at the end of the day it was all worth it, wonderful game , once you get passed the grindyness of it, at a point youre just OP almost lol

The difficulty was what set BoF2 from its contemporaries, though. No other SNES RPG gave me goosebumps during combat like this... especially during the boss fights. You really had to earn your wins. And when you did... WOW.

I could be wrong, but as I remember it, the monster meter wasn't to detect if monsters were near, it was to show you how many monsters were in that area. If he danced slow, you would encounter less random encounters compared to when he's dancing fast.

major points for mentioning Oregon Trail. So many versions of that game. Half your party usually dies on the way. So much fun. That's what I love about SNES drunk he gives you alternatives where to find the game. I am more likely going to find the GBA version because of how busy life is with kids its just easier sometimes to play it on the go rather than at home on the console anymore. From the pictures this looks great. I really loved Tales of Phantaisa and that was super grind heavy but well worth it.

It wasn't really delved into with the commentary on this, but there is a SUPER-interesting, complex mechanic in BoF2 in which you can combine certain characters with elemental NPCs, which enhances their abilities, or sometimes even changes the character into something else entirely (including the whole sprite). You could invest hours (and enjoying it the whole time) just exploring the possible combinations -- but it wasn't even mentioned here.

As a RPG fan I ejoyed a lot this game. However, I must say that it is arguably the hardest RPG for SNES and it requires pleanty of time and dedication. Not for begginers in the genre. The translation is lousy, true, but it is a minor flaw. The combay system is not very spectacular but never mind. The story is not especially adicting, with all the religious references of which you do not care too much, just want to move on. Not too many items or weapons compared to other games, but it´s ok. The characters are amazing (Katt oh lala), and he music is very good. The way you move thorough the map, being obliged to use everytime a different character to access new parts and continents is very interesting. I like that it is a long and challenging game, not very lineal - that´s what I always want from a RPG! The fishing & hunting scenes are nice, the Shamans fussions are great and the town we can build by ourselves is very original. Just a shame that there are a lot of stores and characters that we won´t be able to relocate in our town if we do not take the appropiate steps.

A beautiful BOF game! Even if BoF IV for Ps1 was better, I liked the hunting so much and Rand was my favourite character.

BOFIV was more of a complete and all encompassing RPG but 2's story was better by a mile imo

I remember this one mainly for it being the only ever US imported game, that you got from major chain stores in Germany instead of being forced to order it or get it from one of the two small stores that also had imported games. Those always were significantly more expensive, so that was already a big upside. And yes, the game was really a lot of fun and I spent a lot of time with it. I didn't really mind the grinding that much, but that was also because I REALLY grinded a lot before that dragonfight - and after that I was good for a good while.

Breath of Fire II is magnitudes better than it's predecessor. I love the original, but playing it is a slow drag. II is faster, the gameplay more streamlined, the plot is better written... the first game, I love it, I owned it... but II took everything that made the original fun and boosted it. It's easily one my favorite SNES titles. I love JRPG's though.

I remember spending countless hours grinding on that small island on top of the map. The gold slimes gave you tons of xp... that is if you lived thru it lol

For me this is the greatest game of all times, in every meaning of the word...I hope someone create a 3d version of this someday, and I may die happy

BoF2 I really got screwed on the 1st time I played it. Killed my dad, let bums live in my village ("oh ty for this house, man I can't believe you just gave me a house"-worthless npc), screwed up side quests such as teaching cure 2 to Ryu and not getting the Earth Shamen, didn't finish it fully cause the final dungeon is pure hell and I over leveled, which the game will punish you with in a cruel way due to how the dragon transformations work. 2nd time I loved it more but quit 1/2 way when I found the translation patch. 3rd time I enjoyed the translation patch and beat it fully, didn't kill my dad, let the right people live in my town.

First time (clueless play): Watts (the riddle guy), Brockden (never figured out what the dojo does), Macotti (thankful & that's it, worst guy to get outside of Pechiri who robs you), Barose (ended up trying to give the party OK spells), El (guards the town), & Sumner (plays the game soundtrack). 2nd time (smarter play): Hekkeller (FIRE ARMORY!), Win (pretty cool in the OG version since he changes your window color, bad in the retranslation because he just changes the outline color of the font), Baretta (best armory, probably the best tenant overall in the game), Barose (found out about the Dragon Tear trick & ended up giving everyone Missile), Hanz (best item shop in the game), & Salvador (cool statues). 3rd time: used the all tenants Game Genie & Pro Action Replay codes for all the houses except Baretta's & Hanz's (did turn on the code for Hanz's house after I got him though just so I could see the secret El cutscene with Sten).

Danny Idrovo My 1st RPGs were shining force Which to this day is one of my favorites. And the pokemon like red,blue,emerald Gale of darkness. And phantasy star which I hated . Outside of tekken 7 I have never used A final fantasy character before.

Breath of Fire 2 is an experience that should not be missed. It is so mysterious, intelligent, amazing, and fun as fuck. The scenarios it puts you in are crazy and epic. The challenge is high and rewarding. Please play this game if you can.

I think this game has a particular place in the hearts of European players. As far as I can remember (Google seems to confirm it, too) this was the first real turn-based SNES JRPG to hit the PAL market back in 1995. Many kids, like me, had read absolutely raving reviews in local game magazines about stuff like FFVI & Chrono Trigger and craved them like crazy. And then eventually me and I guess many others got this game for our birthdays or Christmas' present and played it to death. Lufia 2 came out so late in the SNES lifespan that I'd even say that this was the main introductory game for European JRPG fans. Mystic Quest and Secret of Mana I wouldn't really count .

This was my first JRPG as a kid. Made me fall in love with the genre.

Your body of work is so helpful and worth all the time and effort you've put into it over the years. What I love the most is the reviews are such quick hits, no spoilers, very broad review and no more information that one would need to know if they were on the fence if they wanted to play it or not. Thank you!

If you like catchy and melodic, this game has a ton of great music.

I still have a photo copied version of the May/June 2002 GBA strategy guide my bro made in a store! I think it was Albertsons! I played this when I was 10 when my older bro got it on gba. The memories man. Brought this game everywhere. I remember so many characters were deceiving and evil n loved to trick you.

Playing through a retranslated version at the moment. Better than anything released in the last ten years.

Some things in that game were definetly not easy to find, like key objects or the characters you need to talk to, but overall I loved playing it ! I would even say it's better than the first because while keeping the same universe, tropes and even some recurring cities and characters, it added some nice stuff such as the shaman fusions, the new playable characters. The two major drawbacks of that game would be the underwater world which was removed, and the dragon invocations which use all your AP while they had a fixed AP required in the first game.

I bought a new copy for my Bday, when I was 15. And, no matter what everyone says, I can assure you that Katt's chest *can* be opened. Maybe it's just a one time event, thus ROM users have a copy that won't work, but I managed to open it. I had Katt's strongest weapon inside.

The Only Jrpg snes game i played but never finished playing,got to agree that the encounter rate is like lufia 1,and not only that if you merge someone in your team,if they died they will turn back to normal...

My general rule in RPGs is to not leave the area of the first town until you reach at least level 5. Have a few potions or just heal at an inn. It makes it easier from then on.

Breath of Fire II’s difficulty level is 100% correlated to two items: do you recruit Bleu early on and more importantly if you do, do you abuse Monster Hunter’s Island? If you answered “no” to both of the above then yes, I’d put this in the top 5 difficult RPGs on the SNES. While you could argue its rating among the top 5, it can’t push out “The 7th Saga” as number one. Regarding the rest of the game? It’s amazing how much it does well but just doesn’t “quite” reach its full potential, which is something that could be said for Breath of Fire I, as well as III.

BoFII was my very first RPG that I played the entire way through. The translation was pretty bad but the experience was worth it. Especially when I played it a second time and did the best ending. I'm gonna play the retranslation soon. It should prove to be interesting.

The level-grinding was so much in this game, Capcom actually had to double the EXP and money in the GBA version just to make it more playable and easier.

I put this game on my SNES Classic with a patch that fixes the translation. The people behind the patch really did great work and improved the game a lot.

One the most memorable games with great story line, animation and the music. I never played the first cause Blockbuster didn't have it and decide to give this one a try. Couldn't put the controller down. 7 years later I bought in Gameboy Advance 😃

One of my favorite story lines in an RPG ever. The thing about Deatheven and Infinity were mind blowing to me. Don't want to post spoilers in case any one wishes to play this.

BOF2 is like Xenogears on the SNES. Way ahead of its time as far as story complexity!

This is my very first rpg. I remember playing the Japanese version first using a translation booklet. Yup this paved the way for me discovering jrpgs and rpgs in general and I was hooked.

Breath of fire 2 is a fantastic game! When I was a teen I couldn't ever find a copy to buy but renting it was everywhere! My local video store had about 10 copies and they got uniracers with the sticker for this hahaha and not the game sticker the scanning upc! Never heard a word about it so took it as a win! Same story with Chrono trigger and they got TMNT tournament fighter back!

Fun Fact, the character Katt walked through that entire game with no pants and is constantly taking suggestive poses :D

This was my first, narrative-driven RPG I played. I loved it. It introduced me to the world of JRPGs

For anyone new or veteran on BOF 2: Do yourselves a favor and play this MASTERPIECE with the english re-translation patch, it gives sense to everything in the plot and maked the game really shine as the gem it is. Personally i always loved the game since i purchased it when it came out in 1995, but the translation was garbage. With that patch you can finally appreciate the game as it deserves it.

Can also abuse the cooking mechanics in your town later to create infinite Stat boost items. I had Ryu with max stats on the gba version, can potentially do it for every character but the sheer amount of time is insane e

I LOVED BoF3 for the Playstation. I wasn't even aware that it was a series on the US SNES, so thanks to this video, I just bid for it on ebay. I hope I win; can't wait to try it.

When FFII (aka FFIV) was all the rage BOF became my 2nd RPG title. I love BOF2, and yes it is murder. The encounter rates were insane. I came with a rule when it came to this game. The fact that you had a "escape from battles" option, I never bothered. Because it can fail easily than succeed. So I pretty much would fight every fight. The one thing I noticed about the encounter issue was that it didn't matter if you were high level monsters would still pop out and fight you. I remember having a conversation with a fellow gamer a couple of decades ago and he mentioned that that type of mechanic was very annoying. That there were games that often would allow for fight harder targets when the time came and monsters lower would often just ignore you. Oh you forgot to mention that little monster on the top. It was monitor that would inform the gamer of how "active" the monsters were. Mind you this only mattered in the dungeon where monsters were super active vs the field screen. The icon would act like they had drank 100 cups of coffee. The best way I got through the game was to get the better weapon early. Basically, grind a bit hunt and sell the meat and if you can make it over to that next town without getting killed buy the weapons there right away before the whole Bow framing. Lots of characters you can choose depending on the choices you make, fun to hard challenges and a pretty decent story dealing with religious cults. I think that was the dark parts of the story really made me fall in love with this game.

You weren't kidding about you have to grind and go all out in the first couple of battles of this game.. I died twice already but it makes me want keep grinding... Now I only played breath of fire barely when I was young but I just beat it recently and now I'm hoping breath of fire 2 is just as good... I really do like your videos and I really appreciate the reviews u do.... It's really interesting because right now we have the highest technology that has the world has ever seen and we have the PS5 and Xbox One series and yet even though those systems have been games and still doesn't compare to the super Nintendo...

Never heard of this one. I grew up in the NES/SNES era, so that's baffling to me! Will have to check it out.

I am incapable of playing this without Ryusei's translation patch. It makes a world of difference

There is a dungeon where the encounter rate is so insane, you can get a battle after every step. And in the first dungeon you need to grind to level 3 before going to the second floor. This game was quite hard in that aspect, but grinding was not uncommon for JRPGs back then.

Liked the game but yeah the music was horrendous at times especially the castle theme.

i live in brazil, when i was a kid back in 1996, i used to take a 2 hours bus just to rent this game

Best grinding spot is the secret island with the GIANT monsters. Also, don't forget the true ending is a really big secret too. Hope no one missed the real ending!!!

There is no true ending. There is simply a happy and sad ending. I actually prefer the sad ending. There is a sort of false ending if you choose not to go fight a bad guy, the game ends with a different message.

My favorite BoF.

Bought this game on a whim a while back. Thankfully I'm not too opposed to grinding, just as long as that grinding/difficulty level is consistent. I hate it when you're chugging along at a good pace, enjoying the story, and then you get slammed with a difficulty spike.

Rpg's that are challenging are great, I LOVE Battles 2, IF U DO NOT LIKE BATTLES, DO NOT PLAY JRPG'S... That's The Mechanic Of Rpg's that U Will Have 2 Do THE MOST...!!!

Love breath of fire! Would love to see a Nintendo switch version.

Since I dont mind grinding, I always grind up for money to buy the better equipment in each town for all the party members so I always end up being stronger than the next boss that I'm supposed to fight xD

I love the Breath of Fire series, Breath of Fire 3 though was the BEST video game rpg I ever played at the time.

My #1 Favorite game. No dragon form spam, beautiful bg music and the awesome story

Great game, meaner than the first and less grindy; still have my SNES cartridge. Also, the MeowSt drop from Garm was bugged in the GBA release.

When you spoke of the "Monster meter" in your video around 1:00 in. If you meant the dancing goblin at the top of the menu screen, that lets you know if you are on the right path to your current objective I always thought? He looks like he is going nuts when you are where you need to be and if you go across the world he dances slower.

First time I played this, got to the point that i got my first dragon thing, used it, found out it was a single attack summon that ate all my MP, turned the game off, and to this day have never given this a serious try, because of that one thing. Loved the first game, and then this happened. Also loved the third and fourth games. But could never come to terms with that one change. Maybe one day I will try again.

Yeah, the dragons were better in the first game.

The three acts of the story I find very compelling. Act 1 is just trying to help your friend bow. Not setting out to save the world, just clear bow. Act 2 you get back to doing your job as a ranger as established in the beginning. You go investigate the increase of demons. This is something act 1 sets up nicely but it’s not the primary goal. Act 2 gets a little fetch quests and is the weakest part of the game in my opinion. Then act 3 you know who your enemy is and set out to save the world. It’s a rewarding story telling structure and because the bones of the story are solid it makes it easy to overlook and forgive the bad translation.

I would say that in terms of game play time, the game has 4 acts or segments. 1st the prologue then the 1st part trying to help Bow, and meeting the characters. The 2nd part is further exploration of the world to find out the problem hinted at. The 3rd part deals with struggling against the enemy, and how to get to their secluded island. The 4th part isn't as detailed in terms of plot devices, but in time it will take about a quarter of the game play. Where you explore almost a new world to seek out the villian and others. I don't think act 2 is weak at all. It's now you have the freedom and struggle to explore the world and figure things out. If anything, some lame parts of the 1st act feel weak. Mainly having the long ordeal in Simafort, when I really just wish I could challenge the bad guy to a fight immediately.

The grinding in this game is rewarding(I agree,can be more repetitive) . The cast of characters I think is the best in the series (3,4, then 1). Story is the best out of all of the series (I thought original for its time). BoF2 is the best out of the series (personal opinion). I know alot say of people say 3 or 4......and dragon quarantine I mean quarter is out there somewhere.

I love both of them. Never played 3. A fun tidbit: you can find Bo and Karn on an island, but they'll swear they don't know you. Most everyone knows about Gobi, though he changed his name...

I have to look for that. Anyway, they wouldn't know who you (the party) is cause that is different people. His name is Ryu, but it's not the same Ryu as BOF1. It's not even his son. This game takes place 500 years later. So I am surprised that Bo & Karn are even still alive.

I never noticed, but that song at 2:42 kind of reminds me of a slower tempo, less energetic version of the airship song from FF8. I beat this game once, but I loved BoF3 the most and beat that one atleast a dozen times.

There is actually a really good rom hack that fixes all of the dialogue issues in this game. Characters who used to be strange and confusing are now witty and funny. If you're a fan of the game, it's really worth looking for.

Seriously, THE best game in the world for me. It's ironic, this game got me into RPG as a whole but I ended up loving BOF 2 more than any RPG/JRPG game I ever played, it's just so fucking good, man.

One of the best RPG's ever. I would argue that anyday. Plus there's Katt... and Nina... so, y'know.

You know what? I have no idea you know what or you know who. Maybe you could try being a little less specific?

I know that Chrono Trigger and FFVI are somehow better games, but still, this is my favorite snes game of all time! I rented it so many times that eventually, the lady that owned the shop sold it to me for like $10 bucks!

My first RPG and easily one of my favorites.
