@SNES drunk You know, Secret of Mana has a gameplay improvement patch which allows you to assign spells to four hotkeys (A, B, X, and Y) which lets you cast spells in real-time without pausing the game. It's simply called the "gameplay improvement patch" if you're interested.

I personally cannot play SoM without Zhade's miracle of a patch anymore lol.

Evermore is probably my most replayed rpg ever. There's something so special about it. No other SNES game, or any game for that matter, has an atmosphere and sound design quite like the way evermore does it. The graphics and engine are really nice too. It feels faster and more refined over mana. The alchemy system is a lot more interesting too. They could have just gone with mp, but combining ingredients is way more interesting. And then there's the different currencies to use in different parts of the world. So many great ideas.

The spellcasters in "Tales Of Phantasia" were surprisingly useful. A party of one physical fighter an three spellcasters for an extended amount of time is usually really awkward in a lot of RPGs, but in "Tales Of Phantasia" it works really well, and the spells are actually useful.

Really glad you had included Shadowrun, with another brief mention at the end. Watching a friend play that game back when it had come out, really woke me up to ideas and thoughts on other games that may be different. So with that, it opened me up to random PSOne and PS2 purchases later down the line. While games like Final Fantasy VI (3 in NA) and Super Mario RPG opened me up to RPGs in general, games such as Shadowrun taught me to seek out games that indeed were a little to VERY different. I help contribute it to my wide range of personal tastes in genre and games themselves. Including some terrible games I know are really bad games, but ones that I personally love and enjoy playing.

Terranigma is one of the best RPG's ever made. It was really ambitious at the time. I think this game didn't get too much attention because Chrono Trigger was released a few months before and Playstation was just released too. Square-Enix should consider a remaster or at least a port.

Awesome sprite work, awesome gameplay, awesome role playing elements and story, probably the best 16bit top down action. I hate replaying levels, but on this game going back and getting alternate endings is just as fun as playing it the first time. The translation by d&d has alot of character keeps my laughing through the cutscenes. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Thanks!

Kinda cool seeing some Shadowrun love! I fell in love with Shadowrun back in the early 90's with the SNES game and later reinforced by the Genesis game, which lead me to check out the tabletop RPG and then the CCG. I fully agree with your assessment of "Action Rpgs" As for Zelda and the other games listed, they are considered action-adventure (Zelda) and platforming (Mystical Ninja) games by their creators. The defining difference in an RPG is a numeric leveling and experience growth system, while adventure games are usually defined by inventory and puzzle solving. The only Zelda which is an RPG is Zelda 2, since it has an xp growh system.

Yeah, I feel like a lot of people forget about what an adventure game is at its core. But at the same time, I still feel strange about Legend of Zelda since it still feels RPG-like even knowing it shouldn't be considered one. A lot of adventure games wouldn't allow yourself to strengthen yourself so much and leave it on the optional side. I also wonder whether a game like Devil May Cry or God of War is considered an action RPG since I felt like they were.

  • @kekeke8988

@@sigurdtheblue Linear games with little to no exploration, instead of having a big interconnected world, you just clear the stages one after another, no real inventory system, no towns, no quests, yet you can "level up" so to speak. When you put it that way, Zelda seems like more of an RPG than DMC or GOW despite the lack of leveling. There's also Chrono Cross, which works exactly like Zelda, no experience points. You simply get a regular increase after defeating each boss, but I've never heard anyone claim Chrono Cross isn't an RPG.

It feels like i'm playing a mecha anime or an action movie. However it's pretty grindy for me. A bit too much perhaps. I'm pretty much stuck at the helicopter mission in borukta (borkuta?) atm.
