If you have any doubts on this bout being unwinnable, look up Necroscope86's LP of Breath of Fire 3. He cheats to buff up Ryu enough that he can't be taken down, and deals ridiculous amounts of damage, and STILL Garr does not fall. You can NOT win this match. This is a scripted battle where you HAVE to lose to progress, much like Tiga's fight in BoF2.

Man hearing this music, and hearing Garr's gambit/critical strikes is just awesome :p To bad he doesn't always sound like that when he attacks.

Once i forgot to remove "Soul Gem" from Ryu before fight with Garr, what a waste.

This moment. This. F@#$ING moment. The greatest. Even after the fight is great.

Man, I remember trying to win this battle for so long. I kept resetting thinking there was an alternate story path. This was of course before I had internet and could easily go online to find everything about a game.

Actually they do notice. 7 years later as an adult in Dauna Mines there's a random person you talk to that says 'now that you mention it, the last time he saw a dragon was at the Contest of Champions in the Arena'. or something of that nature.

you can see chun-li when the camera pans over to show Ryu coming out, she's standing in the middle of the crowd motionless like Sakura is standing.

No. Balio and Sunder (1st time) can simply NOT be won. Please dont say it is, its not. It's been tested and attempted time and time again (by myself with legit-level 32 characters, leaving the psx on overnight, dealing an estimated 1.8MILLION damage in the meantime.

omfg... i've played this game for over ten years and i never noticed that. my mind has been blown.

Garr actually comments in the midst of battle about settling this in one strike before launching a barrage of Lucky Strikes. Eventually, even if you manage to take them all without falling, he'll wipe you out with an insta-kill strike.

Yeah CAPCOM loves to do cameos. I think Breath of Fire 2 had it where you could see a person litterally turn into chun-li for a second then change back as well.

Love this game. This fight is so fucking good , i wished so hard that there was a tournament where you can fight for money & pride over and over. :-( But anyway , this game is godlike !

I didn't transform on this since I didn't rest before fight. Already played through when it first released after all. I started with Protect, he smacks around 20, healing herb - he takes 73 damage, vitamin, 70 damage, vitamin, 15 damage, herb, sooner or later "Lets Finish This" - 641 damage interface. :)

...how else do you think I managed to survive overnight? influence on balio, and sunder attacks him nonstop. After either 57 or 167 casts of lightning, Balio's AP runs out (and yeah I counted them but I dont recall which number it was >.>; ). Even so neither of them dies. They are programmed to have (capped) -1HP. In short, they will never reach 0hp and die, nor will healing them/hitting them kill them. The guide claiming they can die used the wrong pictures (many times).

Its an easter egg, like what capcom usually does. Also, its like what DAJ01 said both were expecting the ryu that they know, but isn't.

don't lie. You didn't do it. There have been people who used a gameshark to have lv99 rei/teepo/ryu, and left their psx on for an entire WEEKEND. After 3 days, they STILL didnt kill Balio, Sunder, or later Garr. They can't be won, period.

This guy is a fighting man alright

When me and my sis first got to this fight as kids, the bosses before this seemed so difficult, got to Garr and we’re like “great, he’s probs gonna be such a **** to beat”. Hits you for 10hp-20+ sometimes, ok maybe have a chance... Garr: “Let’s finish this! (Normal none crit strike 200-300hp+) ok now we are human again, maybe we can have a chance (Crits 900-1000+) Turned the game off thinking we are under levelled, this repeated a few times before you get to the point you don’t reset the game because you are sort of too pissed, ahhh it’s one of them fights... :D

Legend has it, if you beat him, nina gives you a kiss. So lewd

I was somewhere around lvl 30 or above :s But I still put a good fight xD. When Garr started to do those damaging blows and when i was out of healing items, i transformed into a dragon (with the same result as always xD). Too bad, but this unbeatable fights has also there fun into it :) You just gotta enjoy it and give it your best, no matter what lvl you are, even if you know the result already xD

so the entire audience doesnt notice a giant dragon fighting?

Garr was great if used right, same as any character really. I once used him as my damage dealer one playthrough and using super combo with a focus/Might back up I one shotted the elder...

mxthorne I haven't got a video. But it definitely happened. I went power formation and put Garr on point, spent about 4 turns casting Might with Momo and Shield with Ryu then had Garr use an Hourglass, after that he focused twice and on the 3rd turn I hit him with a 9 button Super Combo and took off over 3000hp. Ryu got a reprisal in there before hand but Elder only has 3000hp anyway so he would've still died in one hit. My jaw dropped.

I have a question I have this game why is both of them scared of garr but they don't fear ryu I do love the game my all-time favorites Next Breath of Fire 4 I beat the game and I'm trying something new now I got both icons which they tell me to get never got that before I always get one never could get the other I got 6 Ivory charms that is sweet plus one more thing my first time ever trying to beat the game and get every single enemy I got all enemies so far and I beat 3 of the hardest enemies goo king berserkr and archermage it is hard to get the goo king sword I did it once along time ago and I'll never get tired of that game plus I like challenging myself

As awesome as this moment in the game was, it makes me appreciate games like disgaea, for having the "unwinnable" fights still obay the game's rules, with alternate outcomes if you actually manage to win.

i didn't survive the first attack of Garr, he immediatly did a lucky strike og 106 (besides, i had only 1 hp :p) but indeed as you say, after a good 6 turns Garr indeed does the "let's finish this" and hits you for over 800 hp. :)

The battle against Balio and Sunder [When you are trying to stop them from kidnapping Nina] actually can be won. But it's not really a win, considering Nina runs away and Balio and Sunder just leave trying to find her. Once that happens, Ryu passes out and next thing you know, Nina thanks you. XDD I sat there for a few hours hammering through that part, determined to win. Didn't happen, the way I wanted it to.

I did that and I beat them a long time ago because I did this where I had Nina Escape and then they said something and then they ran away best thing to do is use the skill that u can bait a enemie to make them attack someone like the were tiger it worked for me

FINISH HIM Mortal Combat style!!! Yah Garr is a badass and Bulio & Sunder are funny yet annoying bullies who never leave you alone!

My first PSX game...ahh bring back memories....hehe and i remember i was makeing highes possible lvl to that tournament xD 35 lvl ryu rocks there:P

I had a gameshark and i gave myself access to all the dragon sphere things and had maxed out my healing items. I ate all his attacks but no matter how much dmg you do, you cant win.

Garr hp is approximately 65000 or even infinite

my brother was playing and he stole from garr using steal, he stole scale mail

You can beat Garr later in the story but not in this fight

once he gets serious, you know its over best battle in gaming history.... 1 of the best i might still have that cheating cd, but when using it to give ryu max equipment and lvl 100, i still couldnt stay that long with garr, same with balio and sunder they are unbeatable, gamefaqs has info about a person who hacked through the game, seeing what holded their defeat back, i think it was the fact they were not true enemies, so couldnt be defeated ps. if anyone knows the rumors we had back then, when supercheats was a rumor site more than cheat or info site..... is there a character named Jarno in a game? rumor says: defeat balio and sunder (1st battle) and instead of getting nina, you kill off nina, and get Jarno..... is that a made-up name, then name of the rumor's creator, or an actual gaming character? still pretty cool, 2 strong enemies being afraid of 1 guy, and he's gonna join you :O .... plus he kicks your butt easily, when serious
