This is AWESOME. The way you started understanding words from watching novelas is the very same way I learned English by myself. I learned English in 6 months, unintentionally…because I used to ONLY watch tv the whole day 🙄 My mom wanted me to study…and I wanted to watch tv, but things in English (Dr 90210, Girls Next Door, ER, Harry Potter, etc). Fantastic
Simple. The medusa living in the bone cage of our skull learns in only two ways: Seamlessly tight contextual relationships like 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9... and pairings of logical context 2,4,6,8,10... OR through the 5 senses with emotional reaction. This is why we never forget the most painful thing ever said to us, the happiest we’ve ever been, the most embarrassed and so forth. In a learning scenario, we must visually create a scene with as many of the 5 senses involved as possible in order to imbue an engram to become a long term memory. This is exactly why flashcards are crap and good for nothing but exams. A word can be said once and become permanent IF there is a strong enough logical or emotional context to associate the sound. Then, there is nothing left except making the sound as we heard it. Success in Spanish starts with disassociation FROM English. The greatest failure is achieved from trying to make Spanish into English. I have to say, the only point I disagree with is the BS called Comprehensible Input. It’s snake oil foolishness written by a Monolingual who never learned to be bilingual.

Yes, it works with all languages. You might need to make some adjustments of course.
Most of my speaking practice over all these decades has been from reading aloud and not talking to native speakers or anyone else. Then eventually I got to the point where I started looking up words that I didn’t know in a Spanish monolingual dictionary. Of course, many times I find words in the definition that I do not know so I then I look up those words too. Finally if I still don’t understand then as a last resort I can look up words in a bilingual dictionary. Now I mostly just watch videos or podcasts or Facebook posts. For years I had a subscription to the Spanish edition of Américas magazine until they ceased publication and then a subscription to Puerta del Sol audio magazine until they ceased publication. Then I got a subscription to Puntoycoma but have not renewed since 2022. I still listen to some older editions of Puntoycoma that I still have. About five years ago I married a Dominican woman and I expected that we would speak Spanish at home but not so. She speaks English all the time and sadly we do not even live together. She has 4 children. Three of them are adults and she taught none of them Spanish. I know a lot of Spanish but there is so much more that I do not know. That’s why I say that I don’t think I will ever completely master Spanish. I’m already 77 years old so how much more time do I have? And no, I have never traveled to any Spanish-speaking country.
@GetFluentinSpanish

Please take a class with me. I'll speak to you only in Spanish for 5 to 10 sessions and then you can easily transition to a native speaker or just use the link under any of my videos to get to italki and find the teacher of your choice. You can choose from any country and almost any price and experience level. I have another student who is 75, he signs in sign language with me. He's studying Portuguese for fun and he already has learned Russian, Spanish and French. The older we get the more we have to keep using our bodies and brains. I'd love to meet you.
Excellent video and just for feedback, I have just returned from Spain, I took inspiration from one of your earlier videos about the metronome delivery, result? even if you don’t say every word, putting together small bite size phrases with the right rhythm delivery made them think that I was fluent!!! Only downside was that they started speaking faster to me…hahaha so I’m off to watch some films without subtitles 👍

This actually makes a lot of since to me. Ive been doing most of these for months, although not everyday. I kind of just do what I feel like doing at the time so I don't burn out, so far I average 2 or 3 hours a day. Ive been watching everything in spanish (except videos like these) 2 hours or more on average, sometimes even 6 plus hours. I was doing a lot of reading and even spanish writing, but stopped (im starting up agian). I often do the voice to text on my phone...mostly because im too lazy to type it lol. When I was watching anime in spanish id say lines into the phone so I could translate them too. I cant remember lyrics in songs even if Ive heard them 100 times lol so that part might not help.

I started learning Spanish as a third language a couple of weeks ago. My native tongue is Swedish, and I'm fluent in English, so in some ways learning Spanish grammar is easy with those two languages in my backpack. It's still early days, trying to learn some vocabulary and grammar (what's the deal with all these damn prepositions all over the place?!), and also listening to beginner level short stories hear on KZread. I’m learning Russian instead of Spanish but this is useful advice. The main thing I will do is the listening, since it’s a weakness. Russian is so different to English that even when I know the individual words my brain can’t always knit them together into cohesive sentences over a sustained period of time
@GetFluentinSpanish
2 ай бұрын
I was studying Russian a year and a half ago and I used some of these techniques. Russian is even more complicated than Spanish. You'll need every trick in the book.
Great tips for learning any language! What about the notebook with the copied paragraphs after one underlined unknown words? Is that just for writing/grammar practice? I know it would be interesting to go back after a while and see what one has remembered. Maybe it could be used after a month or so for reading out loud along with new reading material?
@GetFluentinSpanish
2 ай бұрын
You could underline the unknown words, look them up in your dictionary and then copy that paragraph into your notebook separately. It would just reinforce it. I looked up all of the unknown vocabulary in my Reader's Digest each month for a year and it was rough at first, but each month I know more vocabulary and had to look up fewer words. So the whole process started to compliment itself. You just have to get past the first few months, then it starts to feel good.

Yes, they should work for Hebrew. The only problem I found with Hebrew is knowing how to pronounce each word. I think you would have to find samples of sentences being properly pronounced and then repeat them. I think Pimsleur would be really good for Hebrew since you mostly need to depend on your ear and your ability to repeat.

Yes, make it a routine. If you have the time and if you can think of other ones, do them and please share them with us.
Love these tips! For the reading out loud tip, do you have a recommended reading level? Should I try to read slightly above my current level, or is anything fine?
@GetFluentinSpanish
Ай бұрын
Great question. Try to find something near or only slightly above your level. But in the end, anything will do. Because the idea is that you are reading good Spanish and replacing the "bad" Spanish that you might tend to say with the good Spanish that is written in that book. So even if it is way above your current level, eventually your level will go up. It might just feel better psychologically, emotionally and as far as motivation goes, if you are reading closer to your level. I DON'T recommend children's books ( they can be very difficult), I recommend Beginner Spanish reading books for adults.

Great question. Using subtitles in the target language is not bad, but for this exercise leave them off, in order to activate that part of the brain. When we use our eyes to read the written language it activates a specific part of the brain, different from the part that is activated when only listening to the language.

Saludos

Para Ingles hay mucho material por suerte 🎉
Great video ; question though. Do you treat learning lyrics like the paragraph or like the TV show ? Do you try to understand everything or copy / mimic shadow

Another great question. I should have mentioned that. I think you should try to completely understand the lyrics and the meaning of the song. If you have trouble with that, you can book a class with me and we can go over the lyrics and their meanings among many other topics in Spanish. The info to book a class with me is under every video.

Subtitles can be useful at times, but try to activate the Spanish part of your listening brain by turning them off sometimes.

The one thing that people like me who became fluent in a second language, have in common, is that we never gave up. The hard part about this race, is you can't see the finish line. I understand that. Take a class with me. I'll inspire you and get you on the right track. Regardless, if you follow my advice in this video your finish line will be half as far away. You just have to follow a plan. I have a new student now who saw my videos on this channel. She has only been studying Spanish for about one year. She already can do the class with me only in Spanish. I'm telling you she is a normal woman, but she is determined and disciplined. You have to want to it. Once you have it, no one can take it from you.
El fua, significa... Dar... El extra.
I like your ideas and approach. I am for sure one of these people who cannot learn a language to save myself. I lived in Switzerland for 7 years and by the time I left, I could order food in a restaurant and I could buy things in stores. Now, I have been in Spain for 7 years and really, I feel like it gets worse every day! Sorry for these Questions: 1. When reading out loud. What happens if I do not understand what I am reading? Do i need to highlight every word I do not know? It could be everything I read :) 2. related to underlining the words, maybe it would be good to use one of the paragraphs from my first q? Also, can i use the same text that I am reading out loud? But, only focusing on one paragraph for underlining? Or, do you recommend just reading all the way through without distracting the brain? 3. Would you recommend childrens books for these activities? I do not mind adult stuff of course, it is just an idea I had. 4. With these activities (reading, underlining, copying, and watching tv) do you recommend doing them all at the same time or spread out throughout the day?

I'm happy you asked these questions and it makes me think I should have addressed this better. 1. No, don't underline any words for the reading out loud part you don't have to understand what you're reading. Let the language patterns and words just come in through osmosis. As time goes on and you keep studying and you do the other steps, your understanding will increase. 2. For the underlining part, now you want to learn some vocabulary. A little every day. Try not to overwhelm yourself. Only you know how many you can handle. That's why I recommend one paragraph a day. 3. Personally, I think that children's books can be very difficult with all of the nonsense funny words used to amuse a young person. I think it's better to look for Beginner Spanish books. I recommend on under my videos you will see the Amazon link you can search there. If you use that link, I can get a commission on your purchases. So thanks for that. 4. If you have the luxury of spreading them out through the day, that would be better. But it would still work if you did it all together one after another. It's good to let your brain rest. 5. As I said in the video too, if you can think of other things to do, using your phone, computer, books, picture books, post-its, videos, songs, etc. 6. If you can afford it, consider taking an occasional class with me. I can help you with your plan. It is my pleasure.
I came back to look at this video again. Do you suggest reading the same thing out loud every day until we understand or something different? Same question for the paragraph. Thanks!

Great question; I suggest reading something close to your level if possible, but it's okay if it's higher and read something different every day. Not the same thing. Also with the paragraph, something different every day to build your vocabulary. It's a lot of work in the beginning but after a few months, you'll notice your vocab builds and you don't need to look up as many words. Please feel free to ask anything else if you have a question. www.italki.com/teacher/1372678?ref=1372678
One crucial point to consider: If you're new to learning Spanish, decide whether to focus on Spanish from Spain or Latin America early on. This decision will prevent many struggles later. The ustedes form is identical to the ellos/ellas form in Spanish, which can be quite confusing when learning verb conjugations.

Even though most of my students plan on speaking Spanish with Latinos and I speak with a Latino accent and almost never use Vosotros, I still always recommend that people learn to conjugate the vosotros form all the way through, because you never know when you might need it and I feel like it takes almost as much energy to skip it and avoid it each time as to learn it. The first country I ever traveled to outside of the US was Spain and they started using vosotros with me as soon as I stepped of the plane.
I like the idea of reading out loud but wouldn't that lock in bad pronunciation habits? Maybe shadowing or repeating an audiobook would be a better option?

The sheer volume of Spanish that you can push through your system(your brain) guarantees results. Shadowing is a great idea.
I like the reading idea, i have alot of the goosebumps books in Spanish but I don’t want to mark in my books, sorry if that’s lame but will i still benefit if i just read without underlining words in my books?

Yes, just jot down the words you don't know in your notebook. You can keep your book absolutely pristine.
