A live, semi-improvised performance of Edvard Grieg's "The Death of Åse" (from Peer Gynt) performed entirely on synths and sampler hardware.
I love this song in all its incarnations, on strings, on piano. So while on the island, I thought I'd try it on synths and samplers. I sequenced the main lines in the box, using Native Instruments' Noire (piano) and Arturia's Prophet V (synth) doubled up. Then I chopped that into segments and imported into the Octatrack.
Once in the Octatrack, I took the Amen break and did some mangling, adding some glitch, pan, and randomization. I also added a second break I created, and a line of weird percussion (from a Patreon community member), both from a community sample pack in my Patreon.
Finally, I wanted some real-time hardware synth, and was smart enough to bring the Novation AFX Station with me to the island. This thing has so much versatility going for it, sounds phenomenal, and has an absolutely stellar layout for creating. It's wild to me that the Bass Station II / AFX Station is both one of the best mono synths out there, while also being so widely available and so affordable.
Once it was all together, it was just a matter of tweaking some scenes for effects and transition, and then capturing the performance. Really happy with this one.
Thanks for listening.

I love the layers here: stately Grieg melody overlaid by contrasting percussion overlaid by synth craziness!
Euphoric! Beautiful performance Jay!
This is beautiful! Bravissimo Jay🤟
This is awesome!!! One of my favorite classical pieces as well. Well done Jay and Edvard!
Gorgeous and powerful jam❤ Thank you for sharing!
Jay - absolutely brilliant timings and crossovers which feed directly into the soul!
Very impressive ! cool track, thanks Jay !
Dude. You’ve outdone yourself! What an amazing composition. 100% ear candy. Care to give Debussy a try?

One of my favourite piano pieces to play. Came here from your latest Bandcamp release. I just had to listen to this when reading the album notes on BC.
Awesome jam, great break beats
Stellar use of the Octatrack as usual!!
Go Jay!! This riiiiips!! So dope.
Fabulous Jay. 👏

That was really effing good! 👍
Beautiful!
👍🏾 Great trip in outer space
This is the most ideal performance of this tune ever!
2:54 oh snap! This is my favorite part. Controlled chaotic bliss. Amazing, Jay!
Wow!!! Awesome!
Very cool. Haven’t seen this on the Octatrack 😊
This might be my favorite song of the year… you’ve convinced me to get off my ass and do something with Schubert’s impromptus op 90 D 899
Absolute banger 🔥
Fantastic!
Bro this is really what I’ve been looking for
This is a nice juxtaposition of a classic piece made into ambient harmonies hold up against that frantic breakbeat!
Totally wonderful 😊
There is nothing I want more than an updated Octratrack in Analog MK2 form factor with Overbridge... It would be so good next to my Rytm...
Most excellent
cool jam
👏👏
Yay for being in a cabin with a couple of pieces of gear bringing out the best music 🙌
Well that was a lot of fun
Awesome
The window, where are you!!!
If you'll excuse me slipping into the vernacular; that was fucking brilliant! And I'm not the greatest fan of breakbeats. Really well done.
Amazing ✅
love it
I wish I could see you play this live, main stage of some really nice summer festival.
nice!!!!
Fire!
woaw wtf its insane
Lol wtf I’m actually laughing because that was so insane. Absolutely incredible.
🔥🔥🔥
I absolutely love [a] your music [b] classical music remixed by people who like classical music, not just a particular song [c] Grieg and [d] the Amen break fitting onto things like the Golden Ratio spiral, and this is [e] all of the above
Damn dude... ❤
You're more than welcome.
Come on Nolan. Sign Jay up for your next movie.
❤
Yeah,nice....
Beautiful. Is the OT the "One ring"? If you know what i mean. I had often thought of getting one for the performance side, but never did. You make it sing bro.

I do know what you mean, and I think it is. I talk about it here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eZVrj9WOmqu_YMY.html
Awesome stuff Jay! Question: what are the midi settings to sync the octatrack to the bs2? Been having trouble connecting the two and have tried many different setting combos.

On the Octatrack, make sure you turn on MIDI send and Transport send in the main settings. On the MIDI page of the Octatrack, make sure you set the MIDI channel to the same channel as is receiving on the BS2. Best of luck, and thanks!
Bang this remix on the next Album Jay
Holy fuckballs mate.
i really enjoyed this, even though electronic music is kind of a new thing to me.
So good! The performance is the fun part, right? How long does it take you to prepare your samples, patterns and scenes etc? I just got an OT recently and love playing with it, but I have almost zero samples, so getting going with it can be tiresome at times. Thanks for sharing your awesome jams!

Preparing samples can be really fast (dump a bunch of stuff in there) or slower and more deliberate (prepare a loop of multiple tracks in the DAW). Both have their advantages, with the former being faster and the latter generally leading to strong results. Scenes used to take me longer, but you build up a repertoire of ideas for scenes as you use it for an extended amount of time. All in all, one of the fastest devices I have. And thanks!
AFX Staion sound does not come out of Octatrack! Why is that? Please tell me how to set it up.
How did you learn to use the Octatrack as a sequencer for all the synths?

I read the manual! It's quite approachable for MIDI.

Soon-ish. Just about have a record of this sort of material; an announcement will be posted here, and then the record will be on Bandcamp after that. Will hit streaming services maybe a year after that. Thanks so much!

The AFX Station's output is running into the Octatrack's input, hence the OT's effects on the AFX. Hope that helps!
2:32 If you didn’t have a Machinedrum or Monomachine, how might you attempt to replicate some of those sounds on the Octatrack? Asking for a friend.

There are some great Machinedrum sample packs out there. Myself, I would take those samples, make some beats in the box with those sounds, and then export the loops to the Octatrack for mangling. And thanks!
How did you connect the wiring? sorry...

OT MIDI out to AFX Station MIDI in, set the MIDI channel as same for both. AFX Station audio out to OT audio in, and then a Thru track in OT. Best of luck!
Out-take from the Pi soundtrack almost!
I was suicidal and this performance made me feel better.
Nice use of these instruments in a quasi-live setting
