Same problem with the KLR, except the engine isn't even anything to write home about. You get this "cheap" bike, and then spend $$$ to upgrade the ergos, armor, and suspension. Ultimately the best option seems to be just buying a used bike with all the farkles pre-installed. Skip the dealer tax and the farkle spending spree.

Me personally I’m considering a transalp + cruise control and tractive suspension upgrade but the CFMoto IBEX 450 (450 MT) looks really intriguing. The 450 hits all the points you were talking about except cruise control. It’s a cable throttle system so a throttle lock is your only option for that. But the CFMoto has a low seat height ✅ adjustable kyb suspension ✅ less weight than the tenere ✅ twin cylinder ✅ plus you get tubeless wheels, rider modes and a dedicated button to switch off rear ABS 🤷🏼‍♂️ it’s almost a unicorn bike in my opinion. As far as reliability, that 450 engine has been out for over 4 years now and in a few different bikes and I can’t find any complaints about it. I think the 450 MT is going to sell like crazy and a lot of people will be looking for non biased info on it, might be good for your channel.

  • @PatchedBandit

    @PatchedBandit

That is definitely one of the more interesting newcomers to this segment. But one thing that is not talked enough is the actual weight. It's 175kg (DRY).. that's only a 12kg difference to for example the Tuareg 660 and the Tenere 700 is not much different (don't know the dry weight but T7 wet being the same as Tuareg). So -12 kg and only 44hp which is almost half the power of Tuaregs 80hp and 30hp less than the T7. I think it's gonna be an interesting bike but not going to impress with it's power. It's light compared to these bikes but considering the HP it should be even lighter. My G 650 GS BMW was around the same weight or even lighter and had 48hp. It was too slow for my liking as the no.1 bike in my garage.

@@PatchedBandit yeah the power is a disappointment for sure. I’m coming off a KLR650 so regardless the 450 twin is an upgrade and it’s 50 lbs lighter than what I’m riding now. Still trying to decide on a transalp vs 450 MT tho. If the transalps air box was under its seat instead of the tank than their would be no debate for me. I’m taking a trip to Thailand at the end of the year and the plan is to rent both bikes and do some road trips on the golden triangle then make a decision. We aren’t really allowed to test ride bikes out here in the states and bikes rentals aren’t really a thing unless you are booking an expensive trip with a group and I prefer solo adventures.

I have the Transalp for almost a year now and it's a great bike. I don't do any serious offroading just backroads, gravel and of course long distance touring and city commute. Yes, the crouise control sometimes a miss but there are good aftermarket options. Some day I might buy one, but now I don't miss it. It's a very light and agile bike even in downtown Budapest where I live. The quick shifter is a dream, and the engine/exhaust sounds like thunder. So you could have the little Honda for hard offroad and the bigger Honda for the more relaxed roads . You can do to the mandatory services at the same dealership, which could be a plus in the logistic front and you migh even get some benefits ;) Cheers mate, happy thinking!

I am also a T7 owner and I can totally understand where you are coming from. I really do love my bike and I am going to try and hang with it for at least this season (I have about 10K miles on mine) - but your analogy of a shoe that is one size to big is pretty spot on. Like I was just working on it in my garage and I dropped it and it was a giant pain in the a-- to pick up in a confined space. Curious to know what you plan to switch to as I am about the same size as you and I have put the same "socks" on my bike as well. I like how the new BMW 900 looks, but it seems very similar to the T7. Also have seen a lot of good reviews on the Trans Alp (but it seems like it will need a lot of aftermarket parts).

  • @PatchedBandit

I like the F900 on paper too. It's a bit on the heavy side and seat height is basically the same as a T7 so I would need to ride one to really feel it out. I have sitten on one a couple of times though. Transalp 750 is definitely one of the more interesing bikes. Love a Honda reliability but it is maybe a bit lacking in the suspension department compared to the competition. Definitely one point off the Transalp is no factory cruise control even though it's ride by wire. No idea why Honda did this.

@@uralicdneprov1806 It's far too early to say. I know of someone who's given his Aprilia back because it broke so early on in its life. KTM have sold 10s of thousands more 790/890s, so of course there will be more reports of failure. Also, don't forget that KTM is a brand people love to blame for unreliability. Even people who don't actually know; but have just heard this. BMW are far worse, but as they tend to deal with faults in a better way than KTM, so people tend to complain less. Please note that BMW are replacing shafts on R-series bikes with >60k Kms, that were made between 2013 and 2024. The previous models also had many shaft problems. The shaft on the new 1300 GS has a service life of just 80k km. They've been making shaft drives for over 100 years, but still can't get it right. Yamaha don't have these problems. A properly lubricated chain will last ove 60k km these days. What problems do you think the KTM 890 suffers from?

It is the most all around capable ADV bike, and the suspension is great and the engine is an absolute animal. It gives up nothing to my old 1090R, while feeling 100lbs lighter. i was considering Tenere and also rode it for a while but went for Aprilia Tuareg for pretty much same reasons. Low center of gravity was important for me - it is really easy to handle off road , nice on twisties and good enough on motorways - i would say more comfy seat than Tenere and somehow fits me better. Engine and sound - very nice. Aftermarket parts selection is ok - had for example lower and wider footpegs for Black Dog USA. Just my 2 cents

Similar thoughts. Ergonomy on the Tuareg is definitely better straight out of the box for myself at least from the couple of test rides I have taken with that bike last summer. It just feels twice as nimble as the T7 even though it's pretty much the same total weight. Aprilia nailed the weight distribution on that frame.

My 1st choice would be the 890, but it's a little expensive and maybe high for you, dunno. But it's the top of the middleweight class in my opinion. Next could be the 790 or Transalp, however those do not have the great out-of-the-box suspension even thought the KTM has tubeless which is amazing. And the one that could fit you the most could be the Tuareg but if I recall correctly I heard 1 or max 2 people complaining about it's electrical issues. And also the Aprilia services around your area might not be as much as a KTM or Honda. But the Tuareg as you know has the hightest clearance, long suspension travel (as much as the 890 I think), cruise, tubless, and more. Plus it's cheap since it's trying to prove itself worthy I think.

That's what I learned about the Tenere. You're buying a CP2 engine and then spending the same amount to upgrade everything else. So much so, that you might get over MSRP of a Tiger 900 Rally Pro which is about 16k USD for MSRP. Much better options out there, like the 900 Rally Pro, KTM 690, Tuareg. I have built a Supermoto out of my Tenere. With OZ Racing forged aluminium wheels. 17" front and back. Fixes a lot of problems of the Tenere. Reduced seat height by 30mm, top heavyness reduced, no more tube tyres, easily fixable flats if one occurs, 4kg lighter wheels and rides like a dream on road. I don't even ride off road with that thing so this Supermoto built was long due. You will find fault with every bike. The Tuarex might have better suspension and cruise control but if you keep that bike long enough I would think you could run into different problems. Here in my area not a alot of Aprilia Dealers are available. So Availability is the first thing, spare parts availability etc.... With the Tenere you get Yamaha quality/durability/longevitiy. The Transalp seems to be lacking in terms of offroad capability. At least in comparison to the other bikes on that list. That leaves the F 900 GS, Tuareg 660 and 790 Adventure R with the BMW being the most expensive one. Tough choice between those 3. I cannot get to terms with the KTM design, so the 790 would not be my choice. Even though its certainly a really good bike. The BMW looks great, but would still be too expensive for my liking. Standing position was never a problme for me either. But long tours sitting down were uncomfortable with the stock bar. Now with the protaper adv bar the standing position is not as nice even though sitting down I get a better position. So its a compromise.

Hello from Estonia! I would let you try my Tuareg for a day if you would come here to Tartu, just recently Finnair started to fly to Tartu again so ... My bike has Altrider variable rear linkage for lowering/heightening, offset steering bar and new Mitas E07+ tires and aftermarket windshield, quickshifter, center stand .. these are the most notable mods that change how the bike rides/feels. Because from your expectations this is a very serous candidate as others have already said. Also i find it very interesting that Johannes Dalen also watches you :) Anyways you can contact me on YT if you have any questions or just want to discuss Tuareg or you actually want to come over here and test her out for longer than few hours. I'd be glad to spend a day riding with you. Also nothing wrong with casual vlogs if you have something meaningful to say/discuss.

Also there is an event in the Baltics I'm gonna attend but more about that later... If you have discord or Whatsapp you can join my groups to discuss further. Plenty of used Teneres on czech secondary markets. Some have low total number of kilometres and looking almost like new often very well modified. It is a popular bike many people buy, but they realize it is not their fit or hobby. Which is good if you want to buy one. Almost like new but way cheaper.

They have been on sale for 10K even in CZ in January an February. However why to pay more to local dealer when you can buy it for 10K from german dealer all year around. I'm pretty sure even some local dealer would sell it for 10K if you press them deal or not.

I bought my T7 more than 3 years ago for some of the reasons you complain about. And I still love the pure style of the T7 but nevertheless I upgraded my suspension to Öhlins products as I was missing also a bit of comfort. The Rally seat was also missing the comfort on really long rides so I upgraded here as well. But in case you really want cruise control you'll need to buy in a lot of electronic stuff on your bike, which makes it expensive. And in case you're looking for a low bike maybe the Adventage segment is not the right one for this purpose and you're maybe better with a Scrambler bike from Triumph or a BMW R NINE T. Both with the right "socks" will look like an offroad capable bike, too. I do have own experience with BMW and YAMAHA only and I never felt that my BMW bike were top heavy in the past, due to their low center of gravity. A 2nd hand 1150/1200 GS might be affordable also in Finland but I believe they had no cruise control at these days. That is something for a new and more modern bike. I'm not a big fan of the Austrian/Chinese brand as well as software subscription models on a bike but looks like you can get a 790 Adventure with cruise control. And in case you want reliability and spare part availability we talk about a different story, which is on sale at your end. At the end of the day the bike needs to suit you and your needs/wishes/dreams and I hope you'll find it.

True true.. I'm not the ideal size for these ADV bikes 😅 My problem with scrabmlers etc. is that they are really not that offroad cabable. The occational gravel road is fine but the suspension on these is really not ideal for some of my use cases. I've gotten used to tall bikes but fiding the right one as a shorter rider is definitely a big ask. Tenere thoguh is not only tall its just ergonomically not suited for me. The bar top clamp distance from seat and all that is just not right. Trying to fix the riding position with risers or swapping the bar is just creating other problems to the ergonomy I don't like much. T7 riding offroad is VERY nice though. Riding standing up has always felt superb especially with the stock bar.

Love your content! I did the off road bike purchase in the following order: 1) Did dual sport training with BMW in Canada last May. Morning session was on a Honda CRF 250 F and afternoon session on BMW 850 GS. Before I arrived I was hell bent on pulling the trigger on an 850 or. T7. After I reflected for a bit I concluded (like you) I had a ton of fun on the little Honda. A week later I bought a used 2021 CRF 300L with 875 km on it. Was considering the T7 but every time I ride on one I find it uncomfortable When I add a second bike to my stable I want it to do a few things the 300 L won’t do. The reason why I put Africa Twin as number 1 is it feels smaller and less top heavy than the T7. The addition of Tubeless tires, standard Cruise Control on the 2024 with a bit more highway power makes the AT really compelling. That said the GS 900 is awesome but it would still not be as reliable as any Honda. Cheers!

Problem with that bike is going to be the power to weight ratio. Lot's of youtubers are touting this to be the next unicorn but people rarely talk about the fact that this is how it compares to for example Aprilia: Tuareg 660 Weight: 187 kg CFMoto 450MT Weigth: 175 kg So there is a 12kg difference there. Great? .. Not necessarily. The bike only produces 44 hp. Meanwhile the Tuareg is 80hp. This bike is going to be slow and as I already have one slow dualsport I don't want another 😄 Don't get me wrong here. I'm not saying its a bad bike and its very well priced for sure. But it's most likely not the unicorn everyone is waiting for either (just my opinion) It should be much lighter for what it is. My G 650 GS Sertao was 48 hp so more than this new CFMoto and the weight was nearly the same at 177 kg. It was a nice travel machine but too slow for my liking as the "big bike" in my garage.

I wouldn’t say it’s overrated, I would say misunderstood. At least following what most people that criticize it are saying, they either a) think they bought an enduro bike or b) bought it as a replacement for their big GS thinking it provides the same comfort doing long touring. It is neither of these things. Ismo is an exception, he understands what kind of a bike the T7 is, but it just doesn’t suite him ergonomically. Comparing it to an old Africa Twin shows you probably haven’t ridden either one of them. As for the price, it’s still a cheap bike compared to most its rivals, at least here in Finland. Only one that comes close is the Aprilia Tuareg.

mulla meni tenere WR lunariin ja tilalle tuli 901 expedition, olen todella tyytyväinen. 173 varrella jouduin ottamaan 25mm madallussarjan ja 1-osainen rallypenkin 👍

Sell the Tenere. Buy a KTM. Sell the KTM for obvious reasons, buy another Tenere. Looks like you want an 800 DE.
