Breaking Through the Myths of History, Dr. Kenneth Howell - Deep in History

Historian Dr. Kenneth Howell describes how historical myths play a part in the perception of the Catholic Faith and gives insight into seeking truth throughout history. He explores first the "Galileo Affair" and then looks back at worship and Church government in early Christianity to demonstrate the fundamental importance not just of knowing historical data but being deep in the historical faith.

Deep in History Talks via the CHNetwork:
Why should we go deep in history? As generations before us have learned, history is the laboratory for thinking about the issues that matter most to us as human beings. By placing ourselves back into another time, we are able to look at our own time with more objectivity; we see its strengths and weaknesses. For Christians, there is the additional truth that ours is a historical faith. Christianity is rooted in the historical facts of Jesus's life. The Church which is his body has lived, grown, and matured in space and time. The surest way to know Jesus and his Church is through the study of history, both biblical and post-biblical.
We hope these resources take you deep into the history of Christ's Church and thereby deeper into Christ. Please visit:

Wow this message hit home hard, I literally been studying so hard every day and I mean every day, trying to search for the right Church . But searching for the true church. and I realize that once saved always saved is a false Doctrine pre-rap is false. I couldn't find a church, and I realize now that scriptures were it says, in the last days there will be a great falling away, & not following sound Doctrine, having itching ears, listening to men & have taken doctrines of devils. I'm really starting to believe this is the Protestant Reformation. For the Bible does not speak to atheists. For the Bible was not written to us, but the Bible is for us, and these are believers who follow Jesus. But follow a wrong Jesus, and I see now where Jesus said many will come to me that day saying Lord Lord!!! wow this hit home hard God bless u all 💯🙏🏼☦

When I see comments that argue that the church is in decline, I remember that while this may seem true in the Northern hemisphere, the opposite is true in the Southern. It is the culture of the West, with its Godless materialism, that is in decline. There is no new philosophy that can replace Christianity, they have all been here before, under different names. Despite all the attacks from every side, the resurrection power of Jesus keeps transforming lives, because "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever." Heb. 13:8.

Refreshing to hear such clarity and honesty when it come to history and the church. We all seem to know so much better than those who have the authority to reveal the truth to us.obedience is a lost virtue among Americans. This is why we cant accept the teachings of the church. They have to be filtered through our own suppositions before we will allow ourselves to accept anything.

I like how Mr. Howell said we should "participate in the cross and the resurrection or our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." But honestly, I am kinda getting tired of people saying they are Protestant or that they are Catholic, or that they are Calvinist or Armenian or whatever. We are followers of Christ and in this together. I never even really knew what a Protestant was and I’ve been a believer for 30 years. It disgusted me when he mentioned that his mother was in a Lutheran church and the crowd laughed in the background. Stop it!!!!!! How dumb are we? This reminded me of the failure of man has been around for so long and has always been there. We need Jesus. He is so good!!!

KevinJones Strum2TheBeat No offense Kevin but if we are not all one big happy family then who's the one who left? And who Is the prodigal son who needs to return and be welcomed home? Catholics? I think not. Just the reverse. It is not enough to say we are all "close enough". There are monumental differences in Protestantism that divide us as Christians and has led to a dismantling of the faith. We are together as the Body of Christ but I would recommend watching the video again. Catholicism is not a denomination on the same street as Protestants and the only difference is which parking lot you choose. I'm not being high-handed and looking down. I am merely saying that if you don't know the history of the Church then start by watching this video again.

@KevinJones - Strum2TheBeat Music Less... Kevin, Reason tells you loudly that division weakens humanity. Unity strengthens it. Your Bible will show Jesus rejecting division and teaching Unity, as He also reveals being three Persons but still one God. A mystery for limited humans but a truth nonetheless. JOHN 17:21-23 21. so that they MAY ALL BE ONE, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me. 22. And I have given them the glory you gave me, so that they may BE ONE, as WE ARE ONE, 23. I in them and you in me, that they may be brought to PERFECTION AS ONE, that the world may know that you sent me, and that you loved them even as you loved me. Furthermore, our Lord does not stop with His Apostles, He promises the constant presence of the Holy Spirit to guide all future successors in His one and only Church to the truth: ▪︎JOHN 16:13 13. When the SPIRIT of TRUTH comes, He WILL GUIDE YOU INTO ALL THE TRUTH; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. That is why St. Paul can categorically conclude: 1TIMOTHY 3:15 15. But if I should be delayed, you should know how to behave in the household of God, which is THE CHURCH of the living God, THE PILLAR AND FOUNDATION OF TRUTH. Our Lord, Savior and God confirms to His one and only Church: LUKE 10:16 16. “He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me, and he who rejects me rejects him who sent me. Don't refuse to hear Christ's one true Church any longer; you will in fact be rejecting God. May God have mercy on you and open your heart and mind to His one Church and truth

Interesting to listen to, and I am sure very convincing to Catholics who are made to believe that they are the only ones who read history deeply, but some of the best scholars of church history are non-Catholics, FF Bruce, Lightfoot etc are just some names that come off the top of my head. I too, I have read Ignatius, Polycarp, Justin, Clement and the like, all I can say is that it takes one with a specific agenda to draw the kind of conclusions the Catholics draw. I would rather listen to the original Peter who considered himself a fellow shepherd amongst others, than those who put some particular guy on a pedestal. As far as l know, the Lord rebuked anyone who tried to set himself higher than others!

You may want to Google “Petrine Primacy” and see what Jesus Christ had to say to and about Peter. It goes on from there. As goes the Catholic Church so goes the world. The world is going under Satanic dominion now for want tot a strong, authoritative Catholic Church. Protestants have aided and abetted this destruction of the Christian Faith.

@@thedudeabides3930 I have done so and debated this with so many Catholics and I have to agree with Gregory 1, it is Lucifer's spirit that makes one to set his throne above others, only one with the Spirit of Christ will accept a low position if need be for the sake of exalting Christ! Our primary concern should be making Christ the saviour known to all nations as all the Apostles did and not get preoccupied with the status of a particular bishop who is not even one of the Apostles.

Clearly he was convinced not by any one document, but by his entire survey of ancient Christian writings, both Biblical and non-Biblical. In the end, his decision came down to putting his faith in the Biblical promise "the gates of hell shall not prevail against it" in Matt 16:18. The church fathers all without exception point to a liturgical church governed by the authority of the local bishop in consultation with the bishop of Rome. If you posit that this form of church was an unacceptable degeneration of Biblical Christianity, then you must throw out that promise of Matt 16:18, which itself goes against the grain of Sola Scriptura.

Every legitimate scholar in the world admits this today and yet Catholics still use them to demonstrate this supposed early ecclesial structure of the Church.
