Breaking The Silence : A call to evolve / IBC explanations

Спорт

⬇️ READ THE DESCRIPTION ⬇️
Besides the potential judging mistakes made (or not) during this event (this year and previous ones), the main problem is the lack of respect towards the athletes. Yes the athletes who choose to participate must know, accept and play with the esthablished rules, but the organization must also respect the participants and be clear in its judgment and decisions. And yes in top of that, the system of points is totally fucked up and not at all representative of what the best performances in calisthenics are. And also far too complicated to be easily understood by international athletes... 🤷🏻‍♂️
Our goal is not just to criticize. We simply say what needs to be said for the proper development of this sport. Calisthenics has huge potential, stop wasting time, money and energy on organizations that don't even care about us and our sport. Our team is involved in several projects that will bring big improvements to our sport and our competitions over the next year. 💪🏼🙏🏼 Always do your best.

I'll give you an idea for the rules: No time limit, but a moveset limit (meaning instead of having a time limit where micro-roms give too much of an advantage, you put a limit on how many moves you can perform, like you do in gymnastics rings routines) even if you are elite level you probably can't go more than 3 minutes anyway if you're doing a lot of high level skills. OBVIOUSLY you don't let the athlete rest more than 3 seconds or they could end up resting a lot which would be boring and bad looking. With time not being a limiting factor the ahtlete can do whatever move he likes and he's not forced to compete against overpowered micro-roms, giving push exercises the same value as pull exercises (so finally a Zanetti or Van gelder can be equal to a Caruso or slighly less valuable as a lot of people can do those but only few can do a Caruso) Add bonuses if the set is creative and has a good flow, this way the athlete is "forced" to comeup with sets that differ from one another and it's not a boring repeating of sets you've seen 5 minutes ago. Add bonuses if the athlete is complete, meaning they bring a skill for each field, push, pull, mixed (such as Iron cross), curl (such as hefesto or reverse muscle up), static, freestyle (of some sort as not everyone has the structures to work on it) NO JUDGES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELD, or just one. Set multiple cameras around so you can get all the angles, have one judge only moving around if there's any blind spot or for more accurate close up shots. YOU CAN JUDGE WHEN THE BATTLE IS OVER BY WATCHING THE VIDEOS and you can pause and take your time, no need to have judges writing on their journals as the athlete does the movement, it takes away space, they're not as focused either. Take some minutes after the battle to review the videos this way there's nothing that you miss (besides if you focus and use your eyes you can generally tell who is winning anyway, so you already have a basic idea) And that's it. Best calisthenics competition ever. Some people are gifted in pull, some in push. Trying to constantly evaluate which skill is harder is meaningless as if someone is gifted in push he'll find the van gelder easier, if he's gifted in pull he'll find the Caruso easier. What must matter is the completeness and the creativity of the athlete. Remember that this sport grew big because people like Kamenov and Larosa, Deuanuis (and yes, even Caruso) pushed it to the extreme by doing movements that nobody even thought possible before (Pinky iron crosses, two fingers planche pushups, tornado planches, the Caruso itself that people thought impossible...) so it's only right to give the athletes the chances to shine in their own way on the big stage.

I think that the main problem is not burningate but skills contests… skills are simply not parametrizable… 95 regulation pages, a lot of athletes recalculated the scores of the sets and each time results were different… this is what happens when you try to parametrize something that cannot be parametrized … Anyway respect for Iliesse that had the courage to fight for his battle

Why couldn’t it be? Data science deals with modelling way more complicated tasks than parametrizing calisthenics sets. In this case we don’t need to worry about overfitting problelms, so setting the parameter set as large as possible (for each skill, giving bonuses for deadstops, 4-5s holds) enables to model vast types of performance and consequently compare sets which are at first glance completely different. Restricting to judging just the categories, like it is done in most of the freestyle comps, limits modeling capabilities. It’s more like taking just a simplest arithmetical mean instead of weighted mean, where we can pick the proper weights according to difficulty of individual elements. The other thing is that the set of parameters or lack of them at some aspect (deadstops after fl pullups, no malus for repeating almost the same set, being not strict with form judging, SAT pullup giving more points than SAT hold ) are just inaccurate at BG. No transparency from their site also doesn’t help here. Italian athlete, who knows the scoring system indeed(Franco di Pierro), recalculated the scores, obtaining way different results to those from BG. However, the final outcome was still win for Caruso. Therefore I believe it’s essential for BG to show the exact calculations and in long term reform their scoring system since this battle should have been won by Iliesse if the parameters were more accurate.

They are in gymnastics, why wouldn't they be here? What they need to do, imho, is take out the time limit and apply a limit on how many moves you can bring (like they do for gymnastics rings routines) Realistically, if you have, say, 10-15 moves to bring, you're not going to last more than 3 minutes anyway no matter how advanced and experienced you are. This way you can bring whatever move you want, the time limit isn't stopping you and so micro-roms won't give too much of an advantage, and the athlete can get creative. Pair it with completeness bonuses where if you can do a move of everything including some sort of freestyle you get a lot of points and it's done.
