Duncan’s passion for helping society’s most vulnerable children grew from his own experience in inner city Portland. Duncan founded Friends of the Children, an organization that seeks to break intergenerational cycles of poverty through transformative mentorship. The nonprofit started with 16 children in 1993 and now serves thousands around the country. Duncan is a true champion for children. He holds a B.S. and J.D. from the University of Oregon and enjoys Smokey Robinson concerts, hiking in the wilderness, and spending time with his three children and six grandchildren. Poverty generally implies severely underutilized worker talent. How much productivity in our civilization is lost because a huge proportion of our population is sidelined and therefore not producing at their potential?

This is an Anticipatory Design Science (Buckminster Fuller) initiative. Beautiful intention 💜
graduate high school...obey the law...don't have babies...these were three basic tenets of a scholarship program offered by Ewing and Muriel Kaufman (founder of Marion Labs, owner of the Kansas City Royals)...Mr. and Mrs Kaufman were asked to pay heating bills for the public during some devastating winters in Kansas City...they thought that something was wrong if people weren't in a position to even pay simple bills...so they started offering scholarships to at-risk high school students across the metro area covering all expenses to ANY university they wished to attend.

@@thesinglehomemaker the commenter is referring to having children out of wedlock. The statistics and date show the disadvantage financially when you have kids outside of marriage.

@@thesinglehomemaker Ma'am, you completely took what myself and the gentleman said above out of context. I actually agree with you. I was just clarifying. I had a child at 16, 17, AND 18, and my life is more successful than probably 100% of my peers. NOT bragging, just trying to help you under our context. I too think people should have their children no matter what. Calm down... I didn't mean to have you thinking it's thir OR that. It's this AND that as to where I'm coming from. I defied ALL statistics as a teenage parent. I still am defying them today, 22 years later! So, I definitely think people use having a child as an excuse to NOR be accountable for their actions.

@@thesinglehomemaker what I'm trying to say is that just because statistics say....doesn't mean a person can't accomplish their life dreams and goals. It can be done if a person wants to be accountable for their actions. Most people today howevet would rather blame someone else for why they can't make it with a child.

Great talk but he strops at the recovery part. What and how is that done?
So many ted x about ending poverty... So why hasn't it ended yet... Cuz batman? Bruce Wayne? We don't need one rich person to end it... Spreading awareness and education. Share these videos and discuss your ideas in the comments. When I see a Ted x with less than 50 comments I feel so sad. You will find 1k comments on memes or something irrelevant. Not here though so sad. We want to learn we want to teach... Some team work is needed here

Poverty will never end because too many people are poverty pimps and make money off of the poor. Also, people who live in poverty usually fail to break the poverty cycle because they are too busy surviving to think critically about how to get out of their situation. Poverty is complicated and human beings are even more complicated.
