    Lmao look around some more Leonard, good writing in anime is still out there. A friend of mine once said "Why is it shows with the best writing have the worst drawing/animation?" I can't absolutely agree, but I'd say overall there's something to that, be it older or newer things. Anyways I digress: good stories are out there, w/e their animation!!

    I wouldn't say ONE draws poorly intentionally. He just had no real training. He does his best and improves slowly. But it's true that the anime managed to capture ONE's personal style while also somehow making it ridiculously amazing and fluent.

    Fan maquina Uhm... no.Even his most well drawn pictures look like amateur stuff. He recently got better but it's still a far cry from the majority of even untalented mangaka's works. The reason why his art did improve significantly in some palces is that he gets help. He even talked about it in one of his extra pages. He draws the characters mostly and leaves the background stuff to other artists who are willing to help.

    Leonard Deal even when you compare it to other seasons, i'm struggling to find a show that tops this for me in recent times. I think this is up there with space dandy, flcl, fma and ping pong, etc when it comes to a balance between great animation and fresh writing. There are shows that have great animation, but the writing has far too much anime-style expositional dialogue and it really puts me off, so i just appreciate it from a sakuga standpoint and don't watch it. Dialogue in general is just so dull to watch in most Japanese animation, so it's interesting when they either tell the story visually or have some character acting, like this show. Just a personal thing.

  • @Hochigan

    @Hochigan

    7 жыл бұрын

    Leonard Deal Look, I get that you don't like Mob Psycho 100 too much, and that's fine. However, try to be more coherent about it, because nothing you have written really makes sense to me, and I'll use what time I have to try and break it down f so I can see your reasoning a bit more clearly. Your first sentence is dead air- not specific enough. It has characters that change, and aren't left by the wayside like most anime once this change has occured. It has themes- self improvement, cowardice, talent, power, brotherhood, motivation- I could go on. But this doesn't matter- you just aren't specific enough. what makes a "good character" or theme to you is different to me, so you have to define it. And then you compare it to FMA as if this has any real relevance, other than the people who worked on it- and in my opinion, Kameda's parts in FMA were among the best, and he shows that same energy in this show, even tops them in certain shots, check these out: sakugabooru.com/post?tags=yoshimichi_kameda You claim that MP100 needs to be drawn on ones for it to pass whatever critical benchmark you've set- but that certainly isn't good animation. Good animation can be done on ones, twos and threes- it doesn't matter. For example, take a look at Kameda's shot for the opening- a clear understanding of perspective and camera movement- twitter.com/mobpsycho_anime/status/752506627593342976 Whether it was shot on ones or twos has nothing to do with good animation itself.only with how smooth it is. It's the difference between Disney's buttery smooth stuff done on ones, and the snappy, stylistic Bugs Bunny cartoons. It takes more time to do it on ones, yes- but that doesn't mean it's automatically better, it just means you have more inbetweeners. A good animator will animate and plan on different exposure times when it suits. Your last comments mean nothing to me, because "our standards" doesn't include me. I think most anime is trash. It's always been that way to me, and always will. the conditions for making good shows in japan has always been bad, and these limits almost always drags the creativity down. recognising the artistry that goes into these rare few gems is all I care about. Talk creators and individuals rather than faceless production companies and studios. Trends are trends, and the shitty shows will follow them- and when the money is low, this becomes even more so. But you have to recognise when a show is going against these trends, instead of dismissing it because you don't think it's as good as a show you saw 5 years ago. If you are making the case that FMA is better than Mob, sure- you can argue that, but it's a matter of taste, and yours doesn't interest me. I still don't understand why you're so dismissive of this show.

    +Hochigan Meat Why do you think anime dialogue is dull (aside from the exposition thing)? Just curious.

  • @Hochigan

    @Hochigan

    7 жыл бұрын

    Buck Wade Really? Ok, stupid opinions inbound Well, the reasons for me are kind of tied in directly with the foundation of anime- which is fast, cheaply produced entertainment (in relation to movies and most drama serials) It's no secret that there's a stigma around anime not being real animation, and this is because it's mostly true. Hell, the word "sakuga" distinguishes itself from anime because actual engaging animation is so rare in the shows themselves. It's expensive, after all. So, as a result, you get a lot of dialogue that serves no other purpose other than to fill up time slots. I've explained my issue with exposition, but I also have issues with the ways characters talk over scrolling backgrounds right in the middle of intense situations, lengthening what should have been a two minute scuffle to a full episode. And it mostly just goes over what is already apparent to the viewer. But this is just me- some people might enjoy this as a kind of pacing thing- and I would understand it if the animation accompanying wasn't a simple scrolling background. Obviously, this doesn't apply to all shows- and this is why I try to support shows that take the effort to remove all the fat and work around the restrictions. I actually think most anime would be more appealing to me if they were short form, they would allow for a bit more concise vision. A lot of my favourite stuff actually comes from the animator expo, you should check those shorts out if you have the time. In summary, it's just personal taste. Long, boring conversations being made in a language I don't understand doesn't appeal to me, especially when it's just to pad out the scenes. I didn't mind it as much when I was younger, but now I can't stand it.

    One (no pun intended) thing I don't see anyone attributing to One is the "shots" he uses and the way he tells a story through manga. I read One's OPM after watching the show, and as different as the art-style might be, so many scenes and shots from that anime come straight out of One's head. I honestly think he is amazing and that is the most important part of his work. It's not his plots. If he were to just write scripts these shows would not be HALF as good (look at Road to Hero, pretty damn mediocre compared to OPM). His framing and pacing is on point, and no one gives him credit for it. In traditional cinema, pacing and framing is 90% of what goes on a director's head, in anime everyone mostly just looks at the animation and art-style. With One's works animated by great teams, you get the best of both worlds. His comedy is also genius, somehow he takes traditional jokes and makes them 10 times funnier than anyone else. I'm certain his work will keep getting picked up. He's a gold-mine right now.

    xselinisx No, I mean the original. His drawing is definitely not good, but that doesn't affect the rest of it. Think of storyboards for western animations, they pretty much tell the (visual) story before the animation even begins. www.mymanga.me/manga/OnepunchMan_ONE/1/8 Read from 8 to 14. In the anime the framing/editing is almost the same, of course with a bit of variation (which was probably Murata's idea anyway). 3.bp.blogspot.com/-21Ueg5bGH_E/VmSvZAN7IKI/AAAAAAAAHm0/OyTXndZfPvs/s400/one%2Bpunch%2Bman%2Bsaitama%2Bvs%2Bvaccine%2Bman_gifs.gif Compare that to page 8. There are many different angles and way from which you could've shown Vaccine Man trying to grab the little girl, but the way he does it is how One drew/intended. The anime and even Murata's manga respects almost all of One's ideas, and just try to make them look better. Everything is already laid out on One's work, it just needs to look better. That's what I don't think anyone gives One enough credit for. They just think of mangas as "original stories", but they are a hell lot more than that. There's nothing amazing about the story, it's the way it is (visually) told that makes it amazing. One is just as important (if not more) as Murata, OPM's director and all animators. I feel if One gets a lot better in terms of his art skills, he is gonna be given all the credit he deserves.

  • @xselinisx

    Eyo, I get exactly where you're coming from. I've heard a lot of people say OPM was only good when Yuusuke Murata cleaned it up, but reading the original, ONE's manga was by no means bad. Unpolished maybe, but there were a lot of poses and angles that no amateur would have even considered, much less been capable of. When Mob got the fan chapters submissions, I really felt the difference between the fans and ONE's skills. The submissions had cleaner work, but reading some of them, it felt much muddier than the regular chapters.

    The only part that bothered me about your OPM video was when you were pretty dismissive of ONE's art. i hope the Mob manga changed your mind about it. There's more to art quality than just drawing characters "correctly"; it's about how it connects to the story and how it portrays the intended mood and ONE is fantastic at that. His use of contrast, dramatic composition dynamic paneling is top-notch. And his art itself can be very creative and experimental even if the characters are drawn in a naive childish style (which works with the bizarre irreverent atmosphere of his manga). ONE obviously takes inspiration from various animators in his drawings so reading his manga can be similar to watching an anime like this with various animator styles. There's barely a single "art style" to OPM or Mob or Makai no Ossan since he plays around so much.

    I'm currently watching Mob Psycho 100 and I was blown away by the ending animation. It was absolutely surreal and had that 'The Old Man on the Sea' style to it. Looked it up and it was indeed oil painted animation, which is absolutely gorgeous. The entire series had that OPM vibe to it but I couldn't place it until I ended up looking up the show and realised it was created by ONE. So far, the animation has been impeccable but what completely astounds me is the fact that there really is essentially one key animator to the show. Thank you so much for the background on Yoshimichi Kameda, a lot of his works have unknowingly been some of my favourite episodes. Looking forward to watching the second part of your video (only a year late and all 'aha).

    I agree with this. The animation for the whole anime is more than you actually need. But just enough to create incredible epic, anime without being too too much. It works effectively. All the different color lights, debris, and how the shape of the characters warp show just how much power is in each fight, I makes it appear as if they are bending physics. Lovely

    I actually find the story very attractive too, just as saitama, the hero is almighty, but very introverted and doesn't know how to deal with his emotions, ending up burying them until they explode. And he often thinks about he's place in the world and who he is, Mob just go through an existential crisis. Very cool videos tho, I discovered this channel with the OPM video, really enjoy your work.

    Yes, you are absolutely right. My point is normal 2D > half ass 3D. Movement is stiff as hell, characters' faces look like plastic sometimes, inconsistency. The only part I enjoy in a whole episode is the opening, which ironically is mostly drawn in 2D.

    I wish you break down an ufotable show like Zestiria X or just Ufotable shows in general, sure its not "pure/raw animation" but what they do definitely deserve recognition and is in its own way is very special, in a way its opposite of something like Mob Psycho, but they do their thing very well. Digital effects are part of animation nowadays, and you could say they are the best at that.
