The Genius Behind Naruto's Fight Scene Animations - Norio Matsumoto

In this video, we break down the animation of Norio Matsumoto, one of my all time favorite animators!
A note about the video: When talking about Bruce Lee and Rock Lee's similarity, I should have credited Masashi Kishimoto more - he created the characters and should be partly credited for those similarities. Sorry Mr Kishimoto!

I love the way he animated the ninetails mode in that scene. You could feel the animalistic rage just bursting out as it found pretty much any way in its arsenal to beat down pain. It's almost grotesque too, as we know naruto is still somewhere in there in that mess of rage and chakra.

yes I hear ya. I can imagine a future where top animators are treated like celebrities. In some cases that is already a reality, like if you were to see Glen Keane at CTN, Annecy or Comic con. You would be lucky to be able to see him because he is swamped by adoring fans. Its probably the same for some of the sakuga animators but i wouldn't know as I haven't been to Japan yet..

It is an animation production method involving high quality animation, made by experienced / unique / highly skilled animators. Mostly known in TV Anime, where budget and resources would be distributed unevenly for climactic events in the story, and for repeated scenes such as intros, outros and anime girl transformation scenes. Budgets would be stretched tight for less climactic parts of the story. Overall, the series would maintain the appearance of a high budget production because of the Sakuga animation and would therefore retain it's audience. Nowadays, the definition of Sakuga has been broadened to include pretty much any animation considered to be high quality or unique. I might make a video about this...

Thank you! So many people call Naruto “too mainstream” and hate on it, especially if it’s your favourite anime people are like “Naruto’s your favourite anime? Clearly you haven’t watched much, you’re not a true anime fan. My favourite anime is (insert obscure anime)”. I love Naruto and it’s my favourite. The animation is incredible, it’s creative, the storyline is full of imagination... I’m about to study animation at university because I’m so interested in how it works, it’s so creative and inspiring! People are always like “your just studying it because you like anime” and no, that’s not the reason. As much as I love anime, I’m not basing my whole career on it. I am just genuinely fascinated by the idea of making my art “come alive” in a creative story. Nartuto’s animation is so inspiring, all the dramatic movements and momentum in the fight scenes... I love it ^-^

Naruto vs Pain was great, except when Naruto turned into tailed beast mode which is all I remembered before re-watching it. I don't think it's the art style alone. The scene also had very rough sketches of the background, no noise, flat colors which looks rather rushed and unfinished. Combine that with goofy faces and rag-doll mode pain and I can understand why people mock it.

  • @sakumaFR

I took some C++, web programming, and business programming classes in Uni but they didn't have much to do with what I do now. I learned a lot on KZread, and from different websites- I mostly make HTML5/JS canvas based 2d sprite based 8/16 bit inspired platformers and am currently trying to get good enough at drawing to attempt an action RPG in the veins of Seiken Densetsu. I have a lot of books on animating and find that it is the most difficult barrier for me to overcome without any formal training. I'm not great, but I have done a lot of studying, religiously watch GDC videos, and am doing a lot of sprite work practice. I'm particularly interested in motion/action conveyance with limited frames. That's why (although not exactly a tutorial in what I'm doing) these videos are amazing. At least to me.

It's almost like people levelling that criticism had never heard of the basic fundamentals such as squash and stretch. When he first fights naruto the animation is the same. Up until he starts to go into bijuu mode. The fight itself become more intense which only begs for the animation to be different and fit the emotion and tension within the fight................also they just look cooler!

Kobayashi! I'm so excited to see you cover him. He's become a new favorite of mine. Can't wait to see it - really enjoyed your breakdown of Matsumoto. "Your character does not need to be consistent with the character design on all of your drawings in the animation stage. Imposing this rule leads to very *boring*, *clinical* animation which is not fun to watch." You absolutely nailed it. It pains me when people work under the assumption that a character has to look 100% on-model in order for the animation to be good when all the greatest animators break form all the time. That defeats the purpose of a lot of animation's core principles.

I loved how you introduced yourself and what you did instead of begging for subscribers. You got me mate. And what you did in this video is absolutely amazing. Great video! Edit for Q: I couldn't find the Kakashi vs Obito scene animations in your channel, i'll be waiting for that video tho.

naruto has the best fight scenes of any anime. I started off watching naruto and have watched countless other animes hoping to get the same feel. But Naruto takes the cake

There's a scene where Sasuke cracks Naruto's head and throws him from a ravine and incrusted him with his head !! The animation was excellent

The only anime that comes close in my opinion is Jujutsu kaisen, the choreography feels similar to Naruto and it's pretty good ngl

Hope you liked it! If you didnt binge everything religiously like me (due to nostalgia glasses since i saw only part 1 as a kid. I picked it up again last year to rewatch part 1 then shippuden for the first time.) id recommend finding a site that lists filler episodes so you can skip em, a lot of filler arcs are good but idk if you're the type of person who likes em. Nostalgia aside Naruto is a solid series, not the best, but good.
