I don't have tape and I rewatch the game in slow motion I saw the same thing . He should half got a 1/2 sack. Smith has made strides..
Look how nicely Odiggy progressed after 2 seasons. Mazi is still a youngster, but over 9 games there has been a lot of improvement. He is starting to play like he feels he belongs. Big transition from college for DL and OL kids
Mazi is clearly improving. He used to be the absolute last guy on the line to move after the snap. Now he's just usually the last guy to move. Hopefully he'll get up to average speed to go with his excellent strength.
I watched Mazi on every snap live and he really stood out to me during the game. I'm glad someone made a video dedicated to him because he looks like he's getting more comfortable at the NFL level and getting some success.
I hope he takes a leap by late season in route to the playoff push I really feel he has the makings of a very good DT

He better as a late first first round pick. That's what you expect from a first round pick someone that's impactful... I'd like to see him. Go up against better talent and be productive as well.

Nice job on Mazie. I like how you break it down so the average fan can understand
Love the O.L. D.L. breakdowns. Mazi was more obvious this game and that is perfect timing. We can really use him in the rotation more. He is getting quicker off the ball the most obvious part of his game from college tape was late off the snap the leverage power he has all that just needed quicker first step quicker off the snap. I can't wait to see him 5 or 6 games from now.

He keeps getting off the ball quicker he will beat them to the spot or shed faster. Strength and leverage are natural to him thats obvious. More reps more rips for him and making TFL and quick QB pressure right up the middle. And Parsons right behind him. I'd take that every game

Lets keep it real. The New York Giants are playing with a Juco offensive line, not even SEC level play. Your own grandmother can look like Lawrence Taylor against that offensive line: stroller, oxygen tank, and arthritis included. The only statistic you need to know for Mazi Smith is the percentage of defensive snaps which hovers between 20-25%. DQ & Aden Durde’s paychecks depend on Mazi Smith’s performance, not the so called scouts like Bryan Broadus et al. If DQ & Durde dont trust Mazi Smith you shouldnt either. Your paycheck isnt riding on his performance, their paychecks are. So far Mazi Smith is a bust, and unless massive change takes place he WILL be a bust. Mazi Smith is epically bad.
On that play where you weren't sure what Clark was doing, he was reading the QB. His primary read was probably the QB and then the running back.
Usually takes three to four seasons for defensive tackles to develope. Glad to see as the seasons progresses he seems to be improving.
That QB hit was incredible. It looked like when Larry Allen got that amazing diving tackle. Mazi leaping on the qb looks incredibly explosive for his mass.

All factual. Plus quarterbacks feel those violent DT hits long after that play is over. Mazi is going to make many of these critics feel like asses for saying he's a bust after only a handful of games.
As i always point out. It takes 3 years on avg to develop a DT. Look for Mazi to become stronger as the season progresses.

Love the breakdown on mazi Smith...he gonna b special...keep up the good work big fellow
Cowboys have done some great drafting on the defense and then even better coaching to get those players ready and contributing. Smith is clearly ahead of schedule for a very difficult position. If he keeps progressing at this rate for the next couple of years, he'll be a pro bowler.
Thanks for the film...DT's usually take about 3 years to hit their stride and gain NFL lineman strength. Mazi will be in the Pro-bowl by then.

Not NTs drafted in the 1st round. I guarantee you the Cowboys wouldnt draft him in the 1st round if they thought it would take him 3 years to develop. Maybe if he was a 3rd rounder like Osa, but not in the 1st round. 1st rounders are EXPECTED to start except perhaps qbs like Jordan Love. 3rd rounders are expected and allowed a couple years to develop. I see a bust.

1st round picks are usually difference makers. Not a rotational player
He played great ngl
Mazi smith is a great quiet pick won’t be a stat sheet stuffed but definitely impacts the runs stop defense
Exciting to so him getting better and doing more week to week
Great breakdown. Good to hear & see how he is coming along. Thanks.
How bout them boyz great job. Let's keep this momentum 💪
Hey Bro I really like your Film Study!! Keep up the Great Work..
I think a good deal of Cowboys' fans expect way too much, way too soon. Even thought Mazi is a 1st round draft pick, he is expected to play at an elite level after just a handful of games? That's just nuts. Mazi has to share time with some pretty darn good DTs as well. Let's see how Mazi progresses and improves. Give the guy a fair time to prove himself.
DTs especially more run defender types take a season or two to really find there groove and adjust. Watching him play you can tell he’s got all the athleticism, strength, agility needed to be an elite run defender but needs time and reps. His biggest issue is reading the snap and getting off ball. He has a good get off it’s just delayed at times. After a full season learning I would expect him to come up and do great next year.
Dallas has got to draft a really good middle backer next year or through FA
I think on the run where Evans is backing up and looking around he's thinking it's a play action and covering while Clark was supposed to go for the back and run
He really needs to step up now that Hankins is out. Time to break out baby. Let's go Mazi!!!
New sub, like always another awesome vid.
Top shelf content!!
Great scouting report... I really wish he would have been a day one starter as a late first round pick, but I'm glad he's finally developing. Aside from the overshown.pick i was starting to think this draft was a complete bust.. still bummed about reaching for Schoomaker when O'cyrus Terence was on the board. And we passed on my pet cat puka nacua. Will McClay is a bit overrated.
Think Mazi getting too much hate early. People don't understand the jump from college to pro line play. dudes are just as strong and athletic as him now, and they have little tricks and techniques. The fact that he is contributing and altering plays is big time. looked like the o-line was aware of where he was, and he did a good job on the stunts, occupying both blockers to free up the other guy. he is coming along very nicely.
Great video
Yea he definitely looked dominant in this game, U should do a break down on Sam williams next

it's wild to me that the Cowboys fans who hated this pick are wishing for Mazi's downfall...and comparing it to the Taco Charlton pick.
In the 2nd play he was really late getting off the ball and in the 3rd one he lets Barkley run right past him instead of shedding his block and making the tackle for a loss or short gain.

Idk he was tied up and altered the path of the tunner to the linebackers for the tackle and..... the line back just turned his back to the line and ran away lmao like wtf!?
If he gets off the snap sooner we will see an even better jump in his development.

I think the reason he is so late off the ball is a drug or alcohol problem. He has the reflexes of a 60 year old. That tells me he has a substance abuse problem.

He is improving but lots of pass plays I want to see him throw his guy off & make plays in the gap or TFL. He also needs to have a faster get off. Now it might of been planned but that second play he is so slow getting out of his stance it actually somehow helps him. Now maybr it was planned but just watch how fast everyone else is up & out & then watch Mazi. Lastly again if like him to get off his block better. Don't get me wrong he looks better but I'm hoping next head we see another step forward. Those calling him a bust are silly. Let the kid hone his craft.

Rashaan Evans I saw was playing some yesterday. He is pretty good against the run not very good with the pass but I noticed him in quite a bit early in the game and I know Barkley got 0 yards on his first 7 runs. Really pretty much all his yards came on that one drive in the 3rd. Would like to see maybe more of him paired with Bell at least for a series or 2. When Evans was in it seems like he was in, in place of Bell.
He looked better. I still think that smith and schoonmaker were reached in this rookie class.

Do you think that Jaden Brooks can be wr3
Dude plays one good game and finally more than 15 snaps an people wanna call him elite now 😂
Gallimore had a better game than normal too, it made me wonder if the Giants had issues at guard and center.
32 truck ass should have hit that gap as well as Clark
Masi SMITH add a beautiful game he hast to keep working on his hand to hand combat. Keep lifting weights during the season. His legs need to get stronger
I'm still hopeful that he will develop but man is he slow off the ball. One play the entire D-Line fired off and I swear he didn't move out of his stance for 2 seconds.
👍
Who is 32 Evans I think I don't remember him at all but he was in there with first team
He should be good he's strong and athletic guess it's his technique that needs improvement
number 32 lost in space... my man
We can hear background noise 3:05
Rahsaan Evans 32 was lost on that one play.
3:05 what was 35 doing? He turned around not looking at the line lol like wtf!? Looker lost
He should get 1/2 sack. Thay one I stated before.
I still don't like the red zone game.

Why did they all read pass there.. everything said run and everyone just turned their back to the play and sprinted to a zone. Fucking weird.

@@shaft5 too early to consider him a bust. He’s not in a glamorous position, it’s not a place where he is going to stand out with sacks and double digit tackles, it’s a place where he’s got to be able to plug up the middle. It takes about 3 years to really develop in that position.

He literally has to be blocked by at least 2 players to be blocked. One blocker, he just runs over and tosses to the side. He did it in high school, at Michigan, and will continue to do it in the NFL, once he learns to get off the ball quicker, and learns to use his hands better. Go Blue!
It was the Giants the worst offensive line in the league. Let's see what he does to the Eagles.//

In my opinion Mazi Smith will be a bust. I hope he proves me wrong. One of the things I have noticed about him is that he is often VERY late off the ball. We are in week 9 of the NFL Season so we are out of excuses in the “kicking off the rust” department. I dont know this for fact, but in my opinion his lateness off the ball may be due to a substance abuse problem or alcoholism. Otherwise I cannot explain why a 22 year old would have the reflexes of a 60 year old. Someone his age, ESPECIALLY PLAYING NOSE TACKLE WHERE THE BALL IS LITERALLY RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU should not be off the snap that late. I know for a fact I can get off the snap quicker and you can too. Also, if you compare Mazi Smith today with his college tape at Michigan, he is unrecognizable. The Mazi Smith at Michigan played low to the ground with good technique. This guy is playing so poorly that he is only getting 20% of the defensive snaps. Considering the fact that he is a 1st round draft pick tells you that Durde & DQ dont trust him. So forget all these so-called “scouts” who say that Mazi Smith is “improving and making good progress”. The only opinionS that matters is Durden & DQ. Their jobs are on the line, not Bryan Broaddus, et al. Unless Mazi enters a rehab/detox program quickly, he will be a bust. Period.
